Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Heroes Reborn #1

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Batman #108 (DC Comics) – Batman’s undercover to discover what’s up with the new group in town while things are in motion elsewhere bringing together the future Gotham we witnessed in Future State.

Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue leaned more heavily to fans of Fortnite so we’re intrigued to see if the second issue is more friendly to people new to Fortnite.

Becstar #1 (Mad Cave Studios) – A star-hopping mercenary-gone-full time-gambler. Yeah, that kind of sounds awesome.

Broken Souls Ballad #1 (Scout Comics/Black Caravan) – Saint Abigail’s Institute creates monsters – and those monsters are teenagers! The teens discover they have abilities tied to their psychosomatic conditions.

ENIAC #3 (Bad Idea) – The two issues so far have been entertaining with a nice mix of alternate history and action. We’re hoping for more of the same in this tech-thriller.

Eve #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Eve wakes up to a world she wasn’t traiend to live in, a future dystopian America.

The Good Asian #1 (Image Comics) – Following Edison Hark-a haunted, self-loathing Chinese-American detective-on the trail of a killer in 1936 Chinatown. Yeah, we’re in.

Green Lantern #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue was a bit choppy but our new favorite Green Lantern Jo (from Far Sector) debuts in this issue and we’re excited!

Heroes Reborn #1 (Marvel) – It shares a name with that other event but isn’t related. A new world where the Avengers never happened and only Blade remembers… yeah, we want to check this out.

Marjorie Finnegan: Temporal Criminal #1 (AWA Studios) – Garth Ennis writing a new series. That alone has this comic on the list.

Nocterra #3 (Image Comics) – A world of darkness and an amazing new villain. Nocterra is so well thought out at so many details.

The Secret to Superhuman Strength (Mariner Books) – Alison Bechdel goes over her fascination with fitness crazes.

Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters Alpha #1 (Marvel) – It’s a major crossover event in the Star Wars universe as bounty hunters are all after the same bounty… Han Solo frozen in carbonite!

Suicide Squad #3 (DC Comics) – The first two issues have been full of action with some interesting personalities. Add in a body count that’s already high, and we can’t wait to see what’s next.

Whalesville x Rocks and Minerals (Bad Idea) – The comic sounds like it’s more geared towards all ages and with a new format for Bad Idea, we want to see what they have in store for fans.

Review: Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #1

Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #1

I don’t know a whole lot about Fortnite. I tried playing the game one evening but quickly gave up for a combination of reasons. I know the basics about the game but nothing of the characters and little about the world. So, I was intrigued to check out Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #1 and see how the two properties would crossover and how it’d read to someone who’s generally a blank slate to about half of the comic.

Written by Christos Gage with concepts by Donald Mustard, Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #1 has Batman dealing with a mysterious energy and being sucked into the world of Fortnite (I think). Where he winds up isn’t really explained and that’s part of the point of the comic. Batman is lost. He doesn’t remember his past and can’t speak. But, he’s able to think in words (weird if he can’t speak) and remembers his fighting abilities. This is good, since he’s soon attacked drawing him into battle against unknown foes.

Like Batman, the reader doesn’t get much of an explanation as to where he is or who’s battling. It favors those into Fortnite. But, the reader know little like Batman is a rather interesting direction to take the comic. Some readers will have more information than others and in this case it’s pretty clear which those are. It’s not a bad direction for the comic but there isn’t much I found to suck me in to where it’s going.

Batman fights mysterious people in crazy costumes. The actual fight doesn’t stand out a lot and Batman being in a weird location also doesn’t feel like anything that really pops. The world of Fortnite is presented as a chaotic mess of a thing and for someone on the outside, not in a way that I want to find out more about the game. So, I’m left with a ho-hum Batman story in a world that’s not all that interesting.

But, if you’re Fortnite player, the results are likely very different. The comic is packed with characters (I assume characters) from the game. It’s a chaotic battle which I assume is pretty accurate. It all comes together for a rather wacky battle royale.

The visuals are decent. With art by Reilly Brown the characters and world do pop. Nelson Faro DeCastro provides inks, John Kalisz handles the color, and Andworld Design does the lettering. The group come together for a world that’s a bright almost cartoonish contrast to Batman’s Gotham. The impressive part of the art is how many characters are unique. There’s a lot packed in when the action gets rolling and all of it stands out. There’s little that’s shorted with characters in the background and it’s impressive so much is worked in. While that’s impressive, the art doesn’t quite excite. There’s room for more dynamic choreography in the battle and while there’s some interesting moments, there’s a kinetic flow that doesn’t quite click. The battle is stiff in a way.

Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #1 is for fans of Fortnite. With downloadable content included and how the story is presented, it’s clear this is to get the video game players to check out comics and not comic readers to check out the game. There’s a good chance that the story comes together but as presented, there’s not enough for comic readers to really get sucked into the story. For Fortnite players, they might be more into it.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Way of X #1

Wednesdays (and now Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Alien #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was solid bringing the Alien world to Marvel. It was both familiar and new and has us excited as the aliens are loose!

Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #1 (DC Comics) – The two properties have crossed over in video games and now we get the comic version. It’s an interesting start that plays more to fans of the game than comic readers.

Girls of Dimension 13 #1 (AfterShock) – Four young women are invited to live in a building in NYC. That building has a portal to twelve other dimensions. A malevolent being known as Abraxis is on the other side and the women are all that stands in its way.

Guerilla Green (BOOM! Studios) – A graphic novel about a guerilla gardening movement. It’s a unique topic for a graphic novel, so score some points with that alone.

Hana-Chan & the Shape of the World (Yen Press) – Collecting six short manga from 2018 and 2019, the stories are fun, cute, with fantastic art. Great for all ages.

Jonna and the Unpossible Monsters #2 (Oni Press) – Rainbow has finally found her sister, Jonna, after a year of searching. But, being on her own, Jonna is a bit feral. Will she remember her sister?

Lovesickness: Junji Ito Story Collection (VIZ Media) – Collecting ten stories from Junji Ito!

The Many Deaths of Laila Starr #1 (BOOM! Studios) – With humanity on the verge of discovering immortality, the avatar of Death is fired and relegated to the world below to live out her now-finite days in the body of twenty-something Laila Starr in Mumbai.

The Mighty Valkyries #1 (Marvel) – The Valkyries must redefine their role and we want to see what Marvel does with this group now.

Old Guard: Tales Through Time #1 (Image Comics) – A new anthology set in the world of The Old Guard. The series has a rotating cast of creators delivering their own spin.

Specter Inspectors #3 (BOOM! Studios) – It’s a fun ghosthunting series.

Stray Dogs #3 (Image Comics) – The first two issues have been amazing mixing Don Bluth-like art with a murder mystery.

Ultramega #2 (Image Comics) – The debut delivered over-the-top kaiju action and an unexpected ending. We want to see where the series is going.

Unikorn #1 (Scout Comics/Scoot) – Mae inherits a horse from her mother… that’s really a unicorn? Discover the truth in this journey of healing.

Way of X #1 (Marvel) – There’s been a lingering sinister aspect to Krakoa and the new X-Men status-quo. Nightcrawler steps up to take on the mutants’ inner-darkness.

You Promised Me Darkness #1 (Behemoth Comics) – Gaining special auras from Halley’s Comet, two siblings are on the run from an evil being known as the “Anti-everything” that feeds on these special auras.
