Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Titans #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Arcade Kings #1 (Skybound/Image Comics) – This throwback to the arcades of old has us excited to revisit the type of place we spent a lot of time in.

Avengers #1 (Marvel) – It’s a new creative team and a new Avengers team and after the massive run and epic before, we’re interested in the fresh and new start.

Batman: Brave and the Bold #1 (DC Comics) – This anthology sounds exciting and lets be honest, the title has a lot of prestige about it.

Cyborg #1 (DC Comics) – It’s a new status quo for the character that sends him home. In such an odd age of technology in the real world, how will this series stand out?

Danny Ketch: Ghost Rider #1 (Marvel) – Danny was the Ghost Rider we grew up with so we want to see what this series has for us in nostalgia factor.

Dark Ride #6 (Skybound/Image Comics) – This has been a great horror series and we’re sucked in more and more into the weirdness.

Dark Spaces: Good Deeds #1 (IDW Publishing) – The first “Dark Spaces” anthology was solid. This new story focuses on a supernatural conspiracy that may expose a town’s historical sins.

Disney Villains: Maleficent #1 (Dynamite) – The Scar villains series has been great so far, so we’re absolutely excited to see more of what Dynamite does with Disney’s characters. So far, so good!

Fear of a Red Planet #4 (AfterShock) – The series has been a solid sci-fi detective series and we’re sucked in and want to know who did it!

The Gimmick #3 (AHOY Comics) – The series is an interesting mix of wrestling and super powers that has us sucked in.

Guardians of the Galaxy #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was a hell of a new direction and we want to explore more of it. What the hell is Grootfall!?

Hulk Annual #1 (Marvel) – Found footage horror mixed with the Hulk? How has this idea not been done before!?

Jinx: Cursed Life (Archie Comics/Archie Horror) – Archie has done a hell of a job with their horror line, so any new entry has us excited to see what they’re up to.

Mighty Barbarians #2 (Ablaze) – The first issue was solid mixing classic fantasy with a bit of a more modern comic style.

Titans #1 (DC Comics) – With the Justice League sidelined, we want to see how this team stands up in their absence.

The Vigil #1 (DC Comics) – We don’t know a ton about this series and its characters but we’re always intrigued by new characters.

It’s Chilling Adventures and Strange Science from Archie in August

With a string of top-selling comics establishing Jinx Holliday as the latest star of the Archie Horror imprint from Archie Comics, supporting character Danni Malloy will be next to take center stage. The duo embarks on a new terrifying adventure in Chilling Adventures Presents… Strange Science, a one-shot comic book releasing in August.

Writer Magdalene Visaggio teams with artist Butch Mapa for this latest entry, a turn towards dark sci-fi. In a story about being true to yourself and what matters most to you, Strange Science will also reveal that Danni is transgender.

The new one-shot takes its title from the 1989 comic book series Dilton’s Strange Science, which introduced Danni, a science genius who rivalled tech expert Dilton Doiley’s prodigious talent. In Visaggio’s story, Danni has left that life behind to become an artist and musician, exposing her to criticism from Dilton as the teens try to save themselves from a bizarre time travel accident.

Danni’s first appearance in the modern Archie Horror universe was The Cursed Library, a one-shot released on Free Comic Book Day earlier this month, and she reappears alongside Jinx in their first full-length solo adventure this week in Jinx: A Cursed Life, both with art by Craig Cermak. The sequence subtly establishes linked continuity in Archie Horror for the first time with references to events in other titles, and serves as a starting point for all horror fans looking for a new storytelling universe to explore.

Strange Science, with an open-to-order variant cover by Skylar Patridge, colors by Ellie Wright, and lettering by Jack Morelli, releases August 16 in comic shops nationwide and will be available for pre-order in comics shops this Friday.

Jinx Holliday is a firecracker and a firestarter. Destruction always follows in her wake. And sometimes weirdos stop her and talk about her “destiny.” It’s all combined to create quite the aura of mystery around a 14-year-old girl who just wants some pizza rolls, and while her soul might belong to Satan, her heart belongs to the electric guitar. But one day, when Archie and company come looking for her help because Jughead is acting weird, Jinx and her BFF Danni embark on a mission to exorcize Jughead. It’s the two BFFs vs. Satan for the good of humanity—or at very least, for Jinx to just be free to be a normal 14-year-old girl who just happens to dabble in necromancy and rock ‘n’ roll.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

The Expanse: The Dragon Tooth #1

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Abolition of Work (Floating World Comics) – Bob Black’s essay from 1985 gets a graphic adaptation.

All Eight Eyes #1 (Dark Horse) – Jaws meets Arachnophobia in a new vision of creature-feature terror.

Avengers Assemble Omega #1 (Marvel) – It’s the finale to the epic Avengers storyline!

The Boxer Vol. 2 (VIZ Media) – Though the story is about boxing, there’s so much focus on psychology and the characters, boxing is secondary. Watch our review.

Cult of That Wilkin Boy (Archie Comics) – Archie has been putting out some great horror comics and we’re excited to see what this musician gone wrong tale brings.

Darkwing Duck #4 (Dynamite Entertainment) – We’re big fans of the series which picks up on the classic and beloved animated series.

The Expanse: The Dragon Tooth #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Fans of The Expanse won’t want to miss this series which fills in gaps of the television series.

Harrower #3 (BOOM! Studios) – The horror series has been fantastic with a nice mix of modern slasher classics and a modern sensibility and style.

The Mighty Barbarians #1 (Ablaze) – It’s classic fantasy with a modern sensibility about it. Check out our review!

Soko #1 (Sumerian Comics) – A routine traffic stop for two Serbian beat cops quickly descends into corruption and betrayal as a dark trail of evidence leads to the discovery of unimaginable depravity. Sounds like the out of control cop story we enjoy.

Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow #1 (DC Comics) – The Superman family memeber gets the spotlight in this series as Connor heads out on his own.

Terrorwar #1 (Image Comics) – Blue City was the last livable place on Earth. Now it’s crawling with Terrors-creatures that transform into their victims’ worst fears. Humanity’s last hope? Muhammad Cho and his overworked, underpaid crew of freelance Terrorfighters.

Mini Reviews: Chock’Lit Shoppes and Strange Doctors

Pop's Chock'Lit Shoppe of Horrors

Sometimes, the staff at Graphic Policy read more comics than we’re able to get reviewed. When that happens you’ll see a weekly feature compiling reviews of the comics, or graphic novels, we just didn’t get a chance to write a full one for.

These are Graphic Policy’s Mini Reviews and Recommendations.

Logan

Pop’s Chock’Lit Shoppe of Horrors (Archie) – This gruesome Archie horror one-shot peers into the secret, disgusting things that go on at Riverdale’s one and only restaurant/late night food spot. It’s anchored by an ever-escalating frame story of two teens forced to clean the shop after they skip out on their check by Amy Chase and Federico Sabbatini and discover new monstrosities in the nooks and crannies of this retro diner. The first story by Ryan Cady and Chris Panda has Sandman “24 Hours” vibes as Kevin Keller learns who he’ll be serving at the Pop’s night shift. Panda’s art is quirky, yet freaky, and he puts a new spin on zombies that’s different from the previous Archie zombie takes while also taking the “customer is always right” to its logical conclusion. Actually, the whole comic is wonderfully vindictive for anyone who’s worked a customer-facing job, especially food service, as it has to get old to watch Jughead put burger after burger on his tab. The final story in the one-shot by Jordan Morris and Liana Kangas has Eyes Wide Shut meets Soylent Green energy, and it’s darkly humorous to see Pop’s turned into a cannibalistic, fine dining establishment with Betty Cooper running around trying to set everything to rights. All in all, Pop’s Chock’Lit Shoppes of Horror continues to show that there is a rich vein of horror, anxiety, satire, and yes, humor to be mined from these classic all-American characters. Overall: 8.7 Verdict: Buy

Doctor Strange #1 (Marvel) – After being dead, Stephen Strange is back. I have no clue how and it really doesn’t matter in this new volume of the series. We’re given the general gist of where things stand as Strange sees a new role for him in the Marvel Universe. While he’s still there to protect Earth from magical threats, he’s also there to help his fellow heroes. Think of it as a magical private investigator. That allows readers to enjoy some quick hits as we see Stephen having to solve rather fun and funny issues his fellow heroes run into. It’s all cute and interesting but it’s the appetizer to the main course. Magical beings are making Earth their home and in one case there’s been a murder. Who did it? Well that’s kind of the point of at least the first arc of the series. The art is pretty solid and fits a horror with a wink and a nod take of the series. There’s a back-up story featuring Wong who is now part of WAND, a magical SHIELD. That too is also clearly leading to something but unlike the main story, the art feels a bit off. Wong just looks weird to me. Overall, it’s a debut issue that’s fun but also doesn’t quite excite me to go all in. I’ll check out the second issue to see where the murder mystery goes but it feels like a story we’ve seen elsewhere mixed with a comic that entertains but doesn’t hook you. Overall: 7.4 Verdict: Read

Well, there you have it, folks. The reviews we didn’t quite get a chance to write. See you next week!

Please note that with some of the above comics, Graphic Policy was provided FREE copies for review. Where we purchased the comics, you’ll see an asterisk (*). If you don’t see that, you can infer the comic was a review copy. In cases where we were provided a review copy and we also purchased the comic you’ll see two asterisks (**).

No camper is safe in Archie’s haunted summer!

Three terrifying tales will chill Riverdale’s warm summer nights this June in Chilling Adventures Presents… Camp Pickens, an all-new one-shot from the Archie Horror imprint of Archie Comics.

Camp Pickens kicks off with “Bug Juice,” a frame story by writer Jordan Morris and artist Diana Camero, in which Jughead Jones leads a group of campers on a quest to find a mysterious drink that counselors think will ward off evil and misfortune . . . which Camp Pickens requires because it is ridiculously haunted. As they go deeper into the woods and use all their camp skills to make it through the night, they learn more about the camp’s monstrous past.

That past is revealed in “The Curse of Camp Pickens,” a tale of ghostly menace through the ages by writer Blake Howard and artist Carola Borelli, and the slasher send-up “Down and Out and Death Cursed” by writer Tim Seeley and artist Mike Norton.

Camp Pickens has always been the go-to summer destination for the younger residents of Riverdale. It’s a rite of passage for the teen residents to hold the coveted camp counselor positions. However, Camp Pickens’ mysterious past shrouds a deep, dark secret: it’s cursed, and this summer all of its campers are going to find out the hard way in this one-shot anthology that’s equal parts Sleepaway Camp and American Horror Story: 1984, reuniting the team behind the mega-hit comic series Revival.

Camp Pickens, with an open-to-order variant cover by Francesco Francavilla, colors by Matt Herms, and lettering by Jack Morelli, releases June 21 in comic shops nationwide.

Pop Tate is the glue holding Riverdale together, whether everyone realizes or not. His Chock’lit Shoppe is the beating heart of the city, where everyone can stop in for a delicious bite and some safe haven—even the worst sorts. And not just the run-of-the-mill rapscallions who recently broke the jukebox. When a young Riverdale couple (Nick St. Clair and Sherry Thyme) attempt to dine and dash on the humble small business owner, they quickly discover the fryer grease isn’t the only heart-stopping thing about the Chock’lit Shoppe. From tales of mystery meat to the unnatural visitors that dine late at night, this anthology tells stories about the horrors that happen at Riverdale’s beloved malt shop—and how Pop Tate is at the center of it all, the most powerful figure in Riverdale providing haven to all sorts of terrors and underhanded villainy.
