Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Outcast01_CoverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in. Below are ten suggestions of comics, graphic novels, or trade paperbacks you should spend some extra time checking out.

Pick of the Week: Outcast #1 (Skybound/Image Comics) – Kyle Barnes has been plagued by demonic possession all his life and now he needs answers. Unfortunately, what he uncovers along the way could bring about the end of life on Earth as we know it. A double sized first issue from Robert Kirkman and Paul Azaceta.

All-New Ultimates #4 (Marvel) – Contributor Andrew has been going back and forth on whether to jump into this ensemble cast of first and second string heroes and he just so happens to pick the swimsuit special…

Conan The Avenger #3 (Dark Horse) – Fred Van Lente and Brian Ching have yet to let up on their Avenger series. They’ve taken a slightly smaller, but no less barbaric, Conan and effortlessly shown his transition from drunkard to witch hunter to mercenary.

King Conan The Conqueror #5 (Dark Horse) – For our second Conan pick of the week, it has to be Tim Truman’s nearly-finished, exceptional Conqueror adaptation. In a classic Conan piece, he shows an aged King of Aquilonia tell the story of his rise to the throne to an incredulous scribe.

Letter 44 #7 (Oni Press) – Charles Soule’s masterful mix of politics and science fiction has been a hell of a ride so far, and few writers are able to pack in so much in every single issue.

The Midas Flesh #7 (BOOM! Studios/BOOM! Box) – The fantastic series has hit it out of the park with each and every issue. Though it might have a cartoonish look, the subject is pretty heavy. Such a fantastic series and amazing start for BOOM! Box.

Ms. Marvel #5 (Marvel) – Easily one of the best debuts of the year and absolutely one of the best new characters to debut in some time. Hopefully the new Ms. Marvel has a hell of a shelf-life.

Saga #20 (Image Comics) – Did you read the last issue!? That last page alone makes this a buy.

Savage Hulk #1 (Marvel) – We’re suckers for first issues, and this looks like a fun read. Writer/artist Alan Davis is a one-man-band on this series…definitely worth a look.

Trees #2 (Image Comics) – Warren Ellis is hit and miss, and this series is an absolute hit. The first issue was a fantastic debut, and we expect no less from the second.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Lumberjanes_001_coverAEach week, comic fans are faced with dozens upon dozens of new releases. That type of choice can be overwhelming. We go through the new releases each week to help you out and decide which comics are your best bets! Check out below for this week’s picks.

Pick of the Week: Lumberjanes #1 (BOOM! Box/BOOM! Studios) – Five best friends spending the summer at Lumberjane scout camp…defeating yetis, three-eyed wolves, and giant falcons…what’s not to love?!

All-New Ultimates #1 (Marvel) – Marvel takes the next steps in their Ultimate Universe after the destruction that was Galactus.

Batman: Eternal #1 (DC Comics) – DC has Batman going weekly, in a series that promises to spotlight more than just Batman, but the many other individuals that make up his corner of the DC universe.

Flash Gordon #1 (Dynamite) – Flash is back! He saved every one of us you know. Pulp action at its finest.

Iron Fist: Living Weapon #1 (Marvel) – The vastly underused character is back in a solo series. We’re hoping its as good as his previous run.

Lola XOXO #1 (Aspen) – A brand new series from Aspen sees a young girl cross a nuclear war affected United States in search of her family.

Manifest Destiny #6 (Image Comics) – The alternate world version of Lewis and Clark’s journey.

Nightcrawler #1 (Marvel) – Chris Claremont takes on the return of Marvel’s classic, and loved, X-Men character.

Shutter #1 (Image Comics) – A new series from Image that focuses on a girl who is the world’s greatest explorer. A solid first issue that had me interested in coming back for more.

The Walking Dead #125 (Skybound/Image Comics) – Kirkman rushes the series to the conclusion of “All Out War” and I seriously have no idea as to who lives and who dies.

Preview: The Next Generation is Here – A First Look at All-New Ultimates #1!

This April, witness the birth of a super-team unlike any you’ve seen before in All-New Ultimates #1 – the brand new series from creators Michel Fiffe and Amilcar Pinna!

As the world attempts to rebuild following untold destruction, we need heroes more than ever. Witness the birth of a new team of Ultimates – as Spider-Man, Black Widow, Kitty Pryde, Bombshell and Cloak & Dagger officially unite to tackle a vicious, rampant crime wave plaguing the streets of New York City!

In an interview with Marvel.com Fiffe said:

It’s a war zone in the streets of New York, Hell’s Kitchen in particular. Certain neighborhoods have been torn apart by the recent galactic cataclysm and crime is exponentially growing; local super-powered gangs rule the environment. That’s where Miles and the gang come in, to act with a grittier, more immediate problem while trying to find their own footing as super heroes.

But Hell’s Kitchen isn’t the new Ultimates’ only problem. Diamondback and her gang of Serpent Skulls run the city’s drug and weapons trade and deal in citywide terror. NYPD detective Brigid O’Reilly and her anti-gang unit are on the hunt for Scourge, a new serial killer who’s exterminating anyone in a mask. They’ll get close, but not without a few casualties! And that’s just the first issue!

Don’t miss the blockbuster first outing of a new team for a new generation.

Ultimate Marvel NOW!

Currently Marvel‘s Ultimate universe is breaking down in the event Cataclysm. What the Ultimate line of comics would be like after the event has been a hotly debated topic with some thinking the line would end and some characters folded into the main Marvel Universe (the 616). Marvel has announced that’s not only incorrect, but the line of comics will be relaunching!

The most popular characters! The most acclaimed creators! The most ambitious stories! This is the energized Ultimate Marvel NOW!.

This April, Marvel’s Ultimate universe undergoes a massive overhaul in an exciting and new direction as the industry’s top creators – Brian Michael Bendis, Michel Fiffe and Joshua Hal Fialkov take everyone’s favorite Ultimate universe characters – Spider-Man, Iron Man, Kitty Pryde, Sue Storm, Black Widow (formally Spider-Woman), Cloak & Dagger and more in an all-new and exciting direction after the devastating events of Cataclysm.

It all starts in April with All-New Ultimates, from the creative team of Michel Fiffe and Amilcar Pinna. Spider-Man, Black Widow (formally Spider-Woman), Kitty Pryde, Bombshell, Cloak & Dagger officially unite to tackle the vicious, rampant crime wave overtaking Hell’s Kitchen! But can this new team of Ultimates stand up to the murderous gang known only as the Serpent Skulls?

Ultimate Marvel NOW! continues through the spring of 2014 with the launch of Ultimate FF by Joshua Hale Fialkov and upcoming artist, Mario Guevara. The FF – Future Foundation – is all that stands between the Ultimate universe and COMPLETE AND UTTER DOOM! Can Sue Storm, Tony Stark, Machine Man and Sam Wilson face the oncoming devastation directly after the events of Cataclysm?

And finally, Miles Morales is back in his own web-slinging solo-series, Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man by creator Brian Michael Bendis and artist Dave Marquez. In the wake of earth-shattering events, Miles is back in action with a new status quo and a new outlook on life! But there is no time to sit back and relax. A BIG villain from Peter Parker’s past is alive and well and about to turn New York upside down.
