Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama has passed at age 68

Dragon Ball

Pioneer Akira Toriyama, creator of the manga Dragon Ball has passed away on March 1 due to a blood clot in his brain at the age of 68.

Dragon Ball debuted in 1984 with the initial manga written and illustrated by Toriyama. It was serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1984 to 1995, with the 519 individual chapters collected in 42 tankōbon volumes by its publisher Shueisha. That series spawned an empire that included manga, anime, films, toys, and so much more.

While now best known for Dragon Ball, Toriyama was first widely recognized for his work on Dr. Slump which earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen manga and sold over 35 million copies in Japan. It too was was adapted into anime.

Toriyama was an innovator, recognized for helping boost shonen and inspiring so many after. He’s survived by his wife and two children.

Dragon Ball: A Visual History will be published under VIZ Media’s Shonen Jump imprint and is slated for release in the fall of 2019. The hardcover art book features stunning full-color artwork, rarely seen sketches, and exclusive creator commentary by Akira Toriyama. Dragon Ball: A Visual History  is the definitive journey through the artwork of one of the most influential and popular manga series of all time.

Thirty years of genius are on display in this stunning comprehensive hardcover collection of over 500 illustrations from the Dragon Quest video games, from Dragon Quest (originally released as Dragon Warrior in English) to Dragon Quest Heroes II. Dragon Quest is a classic video game property developed by Square Enix that originally debuted in Japan in 1986 and influenced scores of RPG titles that followed. The Dragon Quest video game franchise spans 30 years and over 30 individual game releases. Many of these titles are available in English. The newest game,Dragon Quest XI was released in Japan for the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4 in July 2017, and worldwide for the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Windows in September 2018.
