John Carter: Warlord of Mars Launches in November from Ron Marz and Dynamite

Dynamite10thAnnivImageDynamite Entertainment has announced a brand new chapter in the history of Edgar Rice Burroughs creation, John Carter: Warlord of Mars, to be written by the masterful pen of comics legend Ron Marz.  Illustrated by newcomer Abhishek Malsuni, John Carter: Warlord of Mars is the newly-minted cornerstone of the publisher’s Warlord of Mars line, launched in the wake of their May 2014 announcement of the comprehensive licensing agreement between Dynamite and Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc.

John Carter: Warlord of Mars welcomes science fiction and fantasy fans to the exotic landscape of Barsoom, where displaced earthling John Carter has to save his adopted world, not to mention his beloved Dejah Thoris, from an enemy like no other he has ever faced.  John Carter must truly become a Warlord of Mars against an adversary who is every bit his equal on the savage red planet.

John Carter debuted in 1912 as the lead character in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ first novel, serialized as Under The Moons Of Mars in the pulp magazine, The All-Story, and later published as a complete novel retitled A Princess of Mars.  The character excited the imagination of readers and quickly imprinted onto the public psyche. As many literary and popular culture scholars attest, John Carter served as the template for a litany of adventure heroes to follow, from Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, and Superman to the Jedi Knights of Star Wars fame and Avatar.

Dynamite’s John Carter: Warlord of Mars comes on the heels of the reacquisition of comic book rights by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. that had been held by Walt Disney Pictures and its Marvel Entertainment subsidiary, as well as a recent legal settlement with Dynamite that cleared the way for Dynamite to introduce key characters and plot elements from the John Carter backstory that were, until now, absent from recent comic book interpretations.

John Carter: Warlord of Mars #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ September Previews catalog for release in November.

Review – Tracker Volume 1 Trade Paperback

Bookmark and Share

A serial killer story with a twist, Tracker is a fairly entertaining series that has it’s issues here and there, but still worth the read.  Written by Jonathan Lincoln with art by Francis Tsai, Derec Donavan and Abhishek Malsuni the series follows an FBI agent tracking down a mysterious serial killer.

Alex O’Roark, the FBI’s top tracker, has his perfect life ripped to shreds when a case to capture the world’s most dangerous serial killer leads him straight into the maw of a werewolf. Now, keeping his secret from his gorgeous fiancé and the FBI, he must hunt down the wolf that infected him before the disease turns him into a monster.

The beginning of the story starts off fantastic.  It’s beyond entertaining and very original.  The pacing is good and interaction with the characters is great.  My only issue is the finale of the series and a break-in/break-out that’s a bit over the top for a series that’s pretty grounded.

It’s entertaining enough though, and a nice first outing for those involved.

Review – Rest

Rest Volume 1 Trade Paperback CoverThere’s so much I enjoyed about Rest, but a lot I had trouble with as well.  Written by Mark Powers with art by Shawn McManus, Marco Castiello and Abhishek Malsuni the story is about an experimental drug that causes it’s user to no longer need to sleep.  The idea of a society that runs 24/7 intrigues me, and I hoped that’s what this series would explore.  That’s also its biggest let down.  While some of the implications are mentioned (the increased need for resources, but also increased output) that’s it, they’re mentioned.  There’s no debate at all as to whether this would benefit society.

The long awaited collection produced by Heroes star Milo Ventimiglia and DiVide Pictures with story by Mike O’Sullivan arrives! John Barrett is a man going nowhere. In his late 20′s, he’s stuck in a dead-end job with no friends and no future. When his best friend from college mysteriously resurfaces with news of a new wonder drug that replaces sleep, John falls into a conspiracy that threatens to change the course of human history! Written by Mark Powers (GI Joe), art by Shawn McManus (Sandman) and Marco Castiello (Witchblade) and covers by the industry’s hottest talents including Tim Sale (Heroes), Phil Jimenez (Amazing Spider-man) and others. This volume collects Rest #0-5 along with a cover gallery, behind-the-scenes commentary and sketches, and much more!

Instead we’re left with a cheesy corporate thriller.  A man takes the drug, possible other corporations are out to get it out of his system.  The failed previous experiments and that cover up.  That’s what we’re left with.  There’s so much promise in the first half, but the second feels like a bad action movie.  Of course there are the people against the release of the drug to society for their not quite convincing reasons, and a brief hint as to what we’d expect if the drug did make it into the world.  But it’s all barely touched upon.  We could have had an amazing commentary on corporate greed or corporations playing god.  But instead, the series comes off as a toe-bit “B” grade action movie.

So much potential that’s never reached and that’s the disappointment.  The series is entertaining enough and it’s absolutely unique, but it’s potential that’s never quite reached.  If you’re looking for a unique comic, it’s worth it, but I can’t quite give it my enthusiastic recommendation.

Review – Tracker #5

Tracker #5 COVA_stampedWritten by Jonathan Lincoln and art by Abhishek MalsuniTracker #5 is a very interesting comic book.  I enjoyed the first issue I ever read in May (#4) and went into this the fifth issue (my second) with an open mind knowing the potential it had.  The comic is an interesting mash-up of an FBI procedural (sort of) with werewolves.  The two together works pretty well.

The first property from Top Cow and Heroes and Villains Entertainment comes to a pulse-pounding conclusion!  FBI tracker Alex O’Roark finally comes face-to-face and claw-to-claw with his maker – the serial killer Herod! But will Alex be able to control his animalistic instincts long enough to extract the sample of Herod’s blood to end his own suffering?

There’s a lot packed into this issue.  The big show down, the scheme to get to that point, some relationship drama and a twist ending that I can’t say I fully got.

My issue with these two issues I’ve read is I didn’t read the first three.  It’s a good comic, they both are, but there’s some built up drama I missed, and a bit of what’s going on that went over my head.  This isn’t a comic book you can just pick up.  This is a five issue arc.  It’ll read great as a trade and as a single issue it would have been better.  Overall I have to say, if you’ve read the first four issues you’ll enjoy the fifth.  For those that are new to the series, definitely pick up the eventual trade.
