Cloak and Dagger Coming to TV Courtesy of Freeform (aka ABC Family)

cloak and daggerVariety has reported that a new set of Marvel heroes are coming to the live action screen courtesy of Freeform, the channel formerly known as ABC Family. Cloak and Dagger will be the next characters to receive the live action treatment.

Cloak, aka Tyrone Johnson, and Dagger, aka Tandy Bowen, were created by Bill Mantlo and Ed Hannigan and debuted in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #64 in 1982. the Dagger can emit light and Cloak has the ability to suck people into a darkness, plus the two are romantically linked perfect for the younger demographic the channel goes for.

The two are often connected to the war on drugs as many of their comics touched on the subject in the 80s. Who knows if they’ll focus on this, especially since Dagger can cure some drug addictions. Cloak’s power is somewhat of an addiction as he feels a hunger to feed it, with Dagger using her powers to help feed the hunger and abate it. Also Cloak’s power could easily be tied into the dark energy seen in this season of Agent Carter.

The Freeform upfronts released this info:

Marvel’s  Cloak  and  Dagger”  is  an  adaptation  of  the  beloved  Marvel  characters  whose  story  is aimed  squarely at  young  adults.  This  live‑action  interracial  romance  follows  Tandy  Bowen  and Tyrone  Johnson,  two  teenagers  from very different backgrounds, who  find  themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love. Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than  apart  ‑‑  but  their  feelings  for  each  other  make  their  already  complicated  world  even  more challenging.  “Marvel’s  Cloak  and  Dagger”  is  a  co‑production  of  Marvel  Television  and  ABC Signature Studios.

There have been rumors of a Marvel property coming to the channel for a while now, and instead shows have wound up on ABC the channels sister station. Both are owned by Disney which also owns Marvel.

This is in addition to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, the upcoming Marvel’s Most Wanted, and a top secret series from John Ridley.

Disney Shows How It’s Done, Preps 3 Marvel Properties for ABC

What does ABC and ABC Family have in common with Marvel?  Both are owned by Disney.  The house that the mouse built is using it’s newly acquired property factory and developing three television shows.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Disney CEO Bob Iger let it drop they’re working on some television shows.

WSJ:In the past year-plus you’ve made two splashy acquisitions: Marvel and Playdom. How are the integrations of those two companies progressing?

Iger: {With Marvel} we’ve taken back distribution, or bought back distribution {Viacom Inc.’s} Paramount, for some critical franchises. Notably, Iron Man 3 will be distributed by us, and Avengers. We’re developing three live-action series for ABC and ABC Family. You can buy Marvel products at Disney Stores. And we’re working on Marvel games.

The Examiner says word has leaked the three shows are based on Cloak & Dagger (which fits the ABC Family demo), The Punisher and a new show based on The Hulk.

This is how it’s done folks.  Compare that with Warner Bros. and it’s years of a television network and owning DC comics and we have Smallville and, well, that’s it.
