Review: 5 Ronin #5
When it comes to characters in the Marvel Universe, not many capture the imagination of fans like Deadpool. He has proven to be one of the funniest characters in comics who has constantly broken the fourth wall. He has shown that characters in comics could be heroic and ridiculous. This has only translated to the big screen, in the two films with Ryan Reynolds.
As his exploits throughout comics, is so prolific and nuanced, that many creators do not even attempt. His voice and the comedic antics is truly a skill, one that Rob Liefeld sets the bar for. That is why when we see him in stories that don’t fit the typical hero at Marvel, we love to see what he does In the continuation of the masterful 5 Ronin #5, his story is brought to feudal Japan, where we see him in a different guise.
We find a Daimyo, whose coffers are full, and strikes fear in most of the people who he rules over except for one, a fool that doesn’t wince at the lord. As he has gravely underestimated the man, who has turned out to be more than meets the eye, a man who easily decimates the Daimyo’s guards. As we find out it was a former solider of the Daimyo who goes by Watari, who was sent to his death in a battle, where the Daimyo’s men were all killed except for him. By issue’s end, Watari kills the Daimyo, and we find out what happened to the other 4 Ronin.
Overall, 5 Ronin #5, the final issue of the series, more than delivers. The story by Milligan is thrilling. The art by Coker and Aja is stunning. Altogether, a story that paints these very familiar characters in some new classic colors.
