Zenescope Announces Their 2013 Convention Schedule and Plans

Zenescope Entertainment has released its convention schedule for 2013 which covers a total of 25 different conventions and cities, including two visits abroad in both Canada and the United Kingdom. It’s the most comprehensive convention schedule for the company to date.  Zenescope’s writers, creators and artists such as Joe Brusha, Ralph Tedesco, Raven Gregory, Anthony Spay, Eric Basaldua, Pat Shand and many others are expected to be present throughout many of the company’s convention stops.

Over the past several years, Zenescope has maintained original and sought after convention exclusive covers. And this year the company has raised the bar as it puts the lovely Zenescope ladies to work with its “Work Force” theme for 2013. Eric Basaldua, Jamie Tyndall, Anthony Spay, Elias Chatzoudis, Franchesco and other top industry talent will take turns portraying Zenescope’s iconic and strong-willed female characters in a variety of blue and white collar work environments in the pinup style that has elevated Zenescope’s limited edition exclusives to be must-have collectibles.

Further, Zenescope has announced its new line of “Black Diamond” exclusive variants. These rare covers are intended to reward the hardcore collectors and fans who end up collecting all of them.

The first Black Diamond cover made its debut in January at Amazing Arizona Comic Con and future Black Diamonds will debut at various, random conventions throughout 2013. However, a specific release schedule and certain details about the covers are still being kept under wraps. Those who miss their opportunity to purchase these covers at the conventions can also look for them on Zenescope’s official web store.

NECA/WizKids Unveils New Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 Collectibles, Games, with Valve

WizkidslogoFrom game world to real world, game creator and leading entertainment conglomerate, NECA/WizKids, under a merchandise licensee agreement with game developer and publisher Valve, today unveiled plans to launch an upcoming Dota 2 HeroClix collection and new game platform entitled ‘NextChess’, featuring Team Fortress 2, both based on the best-selling game franchises. Both titles are set to launch this summer.

The announcement follows NECA/WizKids’ publication of the much-anticipated Half Life 2 Zero-Point Energy Field Manipulator (a.k.a. “Gravity Gun”) replica and release of the Limited Edition Portal 2 Gun Replica, which launched with overwhelming response last fall.

NextChess is an all-new chess-variant platform designed by NECA/WizKids. The platform’s initial launch will feature Team Fortress 2 sculpted chess piece components designed by the artists at Valve. Challengers will go head-to-head with pieces representing their favorite TF2 class and can customize their gameplay experience by mixing and matching various classes as any chess piece.

Unlike traditional chess, NextChess has a TF2-related twist—swappable hat piece toppers. An ode to TF2, each piece will begin the game with a special hat topper and as the action heats up, hats come off. Players can claim various hats from other pieces and assume the movement characteristics of pieces captured, adding an element of variation and challenge to the standard game of chess.

NECA/WizKids also announced Dota 2 as the latest addition of licensed brands to the popular collectibles miniatures game, HeroClix. The Dota 2 collection will encompass two 5-figure Starter Sets, with a 24-figure Gravity Feed to follow.

A sneak peek of Team Fortress 2 NextChess and the Dota 2 HeroClix collection will be offered to New York Toy Fair attendees, February 10-13.

Two Comic Related Real Life Crime Stories

220px-McGruffThere’s been some strange stories involving comic books and crime lately. Coming out of Texas, a former investigator with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office is accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in comic books from a defendant who was charged with embezzling millions of dollars.

The accused, Lonnie Blevins, tried to sell the comic books “including an original issue of Batman worth over $900 thousand.” Blevins resigned from his job last December.

The comics were evidence in a case against Anthony Chiofalo, the admitted embezzler. The theft by Blevins was discovered when Chiofalo’s attorney said Chiofalo attempted to pay the embezzled money back and the comics were then discovered missing.

An attorney for Blevins said the former investigator was innocent and this is a federal investigation. Another investigator was suspended, but it’s unknown if it’s related to the stolen comic books.

In better news, Facebook has helped foil a theft of comic books. A suspect has been caught after stealing $18,000 worth of comic books from an Anaheim, California store. Around January 30th, Beach Ball Comics had it’s store window smashed and 11 comics taken from a display case.

Among the stolen goods: a signed Lee No. 1 “Spider-Man” issue, worth $5,495; a 1939 “Superman” No. 33 issue signed by Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joseph Shuster, valued at $3,300; and a 1940 “Batman” No. 4 issue signed by Jerry Robinson that’s worth $1,000.

The store owner took to Facebook after the theft was reported to police. An alert went out around geekdom about the theft. In a matter of hours, a man tried to sell two Incredible Hulk comics to Collector’s Paradise. Collector’s Paradise informed Beach Ball Comics and the police.

The store did what it could to delay the suspect until police arrived, informing him they didn’t have enough cash in the register to buy the comics. The suspect left, but police later said they had caught him after he tried to go to another store to sell the books and that store’s employee took down the license plate.

Seven of the stolen comics were retrieved. As of late last week, the signed Lee and Siegel and Shuster, along with two other comics, remained missing.
