Sovereign Reigns Supreme in March 2014

In a world where gods, demons, and magic have slipped into myth, Sovereign tells the story of masked undertakers facing the undead with swords while civil wars threaten the delicate balance between colliding cultures. But out of the ashes of history rises a new threat and the promise that magic has not yet faded into mere memory.

Chris Roberson joins artist Paul Maybury to bring to life a multi-layered series featuring Tolkien-esque story of war, magic, and the humanity that co-exists in both in Sovereign #1.

Sovereign is a much different take on the classic high fantasy genre. “So many of the fantasy stories I encountered growing up were set in worlds that were largely modeled on medieval Europe, in one way or another. Lots of white folks in feudal societies, castles and kings, that kind of thing. And I love a lot of those, but I thought it would be more interesting for me personally to look to other cultures for inspiration,” said Roberson. “Sovereign is set in a world in which there are a number of cultures in the mix, and all kinds of ethnicities and types, and the drama comes as much from the cultural interactions as it does from the monsters invading from another dimension.”

Roberson explained that part of the magic behind creating a powerful fantasy series is finding the right team. “Paul’s was the first name that occurred to me when I started thinking about what artist would be a good fit for the story, and the work that he’s done on the book so far suggests that I was right on the money,” said Roberson. “It looks amazing, and isn’t quite like anything else out there.”

Sovereign #1 arrives in stores on 3/19 and is available for $2.99.

Gay Manga Finds a New Home at Fantagraphics Books

Fantagraphics Books is thrilled to welcome the team behind The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame to the family. Massive: Gay Erotic Manga and the Men Who Make It is due out October 2014. This is the most recent entry in Fantagraphics’ queer comics lineup, which also features the anthology No Straight Lines, the graphic novels 7 Miles a Second and Bread & Wine, and manga by Moto Hagio and Shimura Takako.

The Massive anthology showcases Japan’s most talented and influential gay manga artists, including Gengoroh Tagame, Jiraiya, Seizoh Ebisubashi, Kazuhide Ichikawa, Gai Mizuki, Takeshi Matsu, Fumi Miyabi, and Kumada Poohsuke. In Massive, many of these artists’ works are featured in English for the first time; this collection offers an intimate, in-depth look at a criminally overlooked component of Japanese queer culture. In addition to comics and illustrations, Massive features photographs of the artists and their workspaces; cultural and historical context; and interviews with the creators about what it’s like to be a gay erotic artist in Japan.

Edited by Anne Ishii and Graham Kolbeins, and designed by Chip Kidd, this unprecedented survey of manga “made by gay men for gay men” is an essential addition to the queer comics canon; it will introduce the genre often referred to as “bara” (a misnomer for gay manga that has taken on new meanings online) to a new, international audience.

Massive was originally scheduled as a PictureBox Spring 2014 release until its publisher, Dan Nadel, announced that he is ceasing operations.

Activision’s Marvel Games Get Pulled

deadpool_gamescom_two_are_better_than_oneLooks like Activision‘s licenses for a few Marvel video games are up if their disappearance is any indication. The below games have been removed from the Playstation Network, Xbox Live and Steam. Those who already purchased them are fine, it’s just new digital purchases aren’t possible. You can probably find most of these in bargain bins as physical disks now anyways, so really folks will only miss out on the DLC that might not be available in physical form.

Gone are:

  • Deadpool
  • Spider-Man: Edge of Time
  • Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions
  • Spider-Man: Friend or Foe
  • Spider-Man: Web of Shadows
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine
  • X-Men Destiny
  • X-Men: The Official Game

This isn’t the first time this has happend. In 2010, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 and its downloadable content were removed in a similar move. That’s the breaks when it comes to licensing deals and also a good argument as to why physical media is here to stay, and should stay, for a long time.
