Games Workshop Pre-Order Preview: Warhammer: Age of Sigmar – Skaventide is coming!

Games Workshop previously announced the release date so it should be no surprise that Warhammer: Age of Sigmar – Skaventide is next week’s release… and pretty much the only release. The game is the fourth edition of Age of Sigmar and pre-orders will be open for two weeks.

Skaventide features 74 new miniatures, Stormcast Eternals and Skaven.

The Stormcast Eternals comprise 24 miniatures, with a command staff made up of an imperious Lord-Vigilant on Gryph-Staker, a solemn Lord-Terminos with attendant Memorian, a Lord-Veritant with Gryph-crow, and a Knight-Questor. The rank and file are made up of 10 indomitable Liberators , alongside 3 battle-hardened Reclusians with their Memorians, and 3 soaring Prosecutors.

The Skaven are led by a scheming Claw-lord on Gnaw-Beast and a Grey Seer from the Masterclan, while a Warlock Engineer watches over the complement of Skryre weapons. The crowning jewel of this collection of chaotic contraptions is the Ratling Warpblaster, which is supported by 3 Warplock Jezzails. 40 Clanrats make up the bulk of this horde, and 3 hulking Rat Ogres provide the muscle.

Not just packed with two armies it has everything you need to play including the 144-page Spearhad: Fire and Jade book, a double-sided game board, four pieces of terrain, 3″ and 6″ range rules, cards you need to play, and some dice. There’s also Core and Advanced rules, the First Blood battlepack, and the Path to Glory battlepack. There’s also a deck of 17 cards which contain the season rules and battle plans for the 2024-25 Matched Play Season General’s Handbook.

Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Skaventide

And… pre-order bonuses!

If you order from the Warhammer webstore you’ll get a set of six metal objective tokens. If you get it at the local Warhammer store on release, you’ll get a set of command point tokens. Pre-ordering from independent stores, you’ll get a hardback notebook themed after Skaventide.

As has become tradition, Black Library will be releasing a tie-in book, Skaventide by Gary Kloster.

Deep in the heart of the Skaven apocalypse, the Stormcast Eternals of the Ruination Chamber fight for their survival, but within this blighted wasteland lies a prize – a lost Stormcast Eternal who carries within him ancient and forbidden knowledge.

There’s a regular edition, and a royal blue Special Edition with screen printed artwork in silver foil on the front and spine with blue page edges and a blue ribbon bookmark. There’s also full-color art inside and it’s signed by the author.

Modiphius Entertainment acquires Strato Minis Studio and Mech Wargame Hardwar

Modiphius Entertainment has announced that it has acquired Strato Minis Studio including the complete Hardwar, Retrobots, and Stratoyager game and miniature lines from their international creators.

The acquisition includes Hardwar – a 6mm scale miniatures range and game set in the turn of the twenty-second century with fast-paced tactical rules and a hard sci-fi setting covering armour, mechs, air and seacraft in both 6mm and other scales, and Stratoyager – the game of space fighter combat.

The Hardwar line will be released in waves, starting with a reprint of the core rulebook that will include the previous content from the Extended Hardware and No Heroes PDFs. This will be followed by a selection of Starter Sets, with the aim of getting new people playing in the universe and building anticipation for the future of Hardwar.

Hardwar is a hard sci-fi setting that uses an innovative system to recreate fast-paced tactical combat between mechs, armour and air forces. It features straightforward rules allowing a mix of classic armoured warfare, with mechs, spacecraft, exotic experimental weapons, cybernetics, sentient combat swarms and ECM.

In Hardwar, players can immerse themselves in a variety of roles, from starting a private security company or becoming a corporate commander delivering shareholders’ demands to leading a revolutionary force, being a small-time dictator or a noble wasteland marshal charged with protecting farmsteads.

Modiphius will produce a quickstart PDF, which will allow people to try Hardwar for free. The publisher will also be developing a solo/co-op game to let you play a procedurally generated campaign with a growing armoured force.

Atomic Mass Games announces the end of development for Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Wars: Armada

Star Wars: X-Wing logo

It should come as no surprise but Atomic Mass Games has announced that it is ending development on Star Wars: X-Wing and Star Wars: Armada.

Both of the miniature games have been on life support for some time with releases diminishing or non-existent.

Atomic Mass Games mentions rising production costs and challenges due to global manufacturing and the pandemic as reasons for the decision. They stated in the announcement that it is “increasingly difficult to produce high-quality, pre-painted miniatures.

Though development is ending, they are still supporting tournaments and Organized play for both games and the Open World Championship at AdeptiCon in March 2025. It’s unknown what might happen after that.

Atomic Mass Games took over the management development for X-Wing and Armada as well as Star Wars: Legion in 2020 from Fantasy Flight. Both companies are owned by Asmodee which itself was, until recently, owned by the embattled Embracer. The company in recent years also launched Star Wars: Shatterpoint, a non-pre-painted miniature game. Their initial launch game was Marvel: Crisis Protocol which brough Marvel’s characters to the tabletop in a miniature game.

The publisher has faced a lot of criticism after taking on the Star Wars games from Fantasy Flight. Some have said the company had too much on their plate and not enough resources to handle five miniature games. X-Wing and Armada have struggled for years in support. X-Wing especially took a hit when it updated its rules in 2022 that haven’t been well received. There was a point that Star Wars: X-Wing was one of, if not the top miniature game, challenging Games Workshop’s Warhammer.
