Updated: Kickstarter Censors Don Simpson’s Megaton Man: Multimensions

Update: Kickstarter has reversed their decision and Megaton Man: Multimensions is now live. As we expected, Kickstarter is claiming that they were attempting to comply with US trade restrictions against Iran which doesn’t pass the smell test, but it’s approved. You can read Kickstarter’s reversal below and then the original article below that.

Megaton Man: Multimensions

Don Simpson has posted that Kickstarter has “not approved,” aka censored, his next crowdfunding project, Megaton Man: Multimensions. The reason given is that one of the contributors is located in Iran. The reason given was “safety and trust.”

Milo Trent is on the cover of Megaton Man: Multimensions and contributes four pages out of the 214 in the book. Trent is also located in Iran.

Simpson was sent an email from Kickstarter Trust & Safety after their review process where they asked for two more pieces of information. The questions asked were:

  • What is the nature of your engagement with individuals in Iran, if any?
  • What is the nature of your engagemnent with entities in Iran, if any?

After Simpson’s publisher reached out to Kickstarter, the crowdfunding platform declined the project.

In their rejection letter, which you can read below, Kickstarter points to its Terms of Use, in particular section 13 which basically states they can make changes to their Site and Services whenever they want, they can decide who’s eligible to use Kickstarter, they can reject/cancel/interrupt/remove/suspend any project, they can withhold funds, they can also force refunds (interesting, maybe they should do that for the scams/failed projects that regularly run on the site), among other things. They of course aren’t liable for any of the damages concerning that.

Kickstarter not approved letter

Section 13 does link out to Community Guidelines and rules for starting projects. Neither of those mention anything about Iran. In a search of the entire site, we can’t find any mention of Iran being banned from Kickstarter.

There’s a list of prohibited projects.

There’s a list of who can use Kickstarter and the countries they need to be from. In fact, it tells how those not in those countries can open a business in the US using Stripe Atlas.

If Kickstarter is doing so under so guise of “American sanctions,” it’s permissible to send money to individuals in Iran as long as the individuals are sanctioned or the institution is not sanctioned. But, that’s not for Kickstarter to enforce in this case since the individuals are in the US, it’s those individuals managing the project that must comply with any rules and regulations.

Both Don Simpson and his publisher are located in countries approved and listed.

Kickstarter is open to backers worldwide. Nearly anyone from anywhere can support a project as long as they have a major debit or credit card and a Kickstarter account.

Apparently, Kickstarter is happy to take money from anyone worldwide, but if you’re from certain countries, fuck off for unknown reasons.

Alien Books continues its growth with the addition of the legendary Zorro comic book license. Alien Books will give the iconic swordsman the spotlight he deserves across a variety of crowdfunding, retail projects, direct market releases, and book store titles. The crowdfunding campaign will offer deluxe add-ons including limited edition Zorro busts, trading cards and prints. The project will launch on April 23rd and interested backers can sign up now to get notified when it goes live

Additional Zorro projects will be announced in the months to come and will be available to order for comic shops and bookstores through IDW Publishing’s solicitations.

Good Trouble Comics announces the Appalachia Comics Project aiming to spotlight the devastation of Hurricane Helene and history of the region

Appalachia Comics Project

Good Trouble Comics, the publisher behind numerous educational comics spotlighting American history and civics, has announced the Appalachia Comics Project (ACP). As first reported by Smoky Mountain News, The Appalachia Comics Project aims to:

  1. create a nonfiction graphic history of the Hurricane Helene disaster in southern Appalachia, and
  2. partner with area journalists, storytellers, and artist to reach an underserved–and often intentionally misunderstood–audience where the loss of local news infrastructure and institutions has led to rampant mis- and disinformation.

Initially launching in June with a Kickstarter, the project is multifaceted that includes multiple comic projects and various goals but most importantly help contribute to the rebuilding of the Southern Appalachian economy and community. Three steps it’s taking are:

  1. Putting affected creators and journalists back to work, giving survivors paid story-telling work, and allowing locals control over their own narrative,
  2. Providing no-cost copies of the Helene graphic history and subsequent Appalachia Comics, to local Appalachian bookstores to sell and public/school libraries to help rebuild their collections, and
  3. Establish a vetted history of the disaster as well as a regular source for community news.

Part of its initial goal is to donate 1000+ graphic history copies, and ongoing free distribution of Appalachia Comics issues, to local bookstores, schools, and public libraries.

Planned for release are:

● Quarterly 64-page comics/magazine hybrid inspired by the “Foxfire” project of the 1970s and The Bitter Southerner today, blending folklore, history, fiction, and nonfiction comics with a focus on Appalachia. Here we can explore environmentalism through shared experiences like growing a garden, changes in weather, and land management, as well as innovative explorations of foodways including comic-style recipes.

● Quarterly 32-page comics profiling the people of Appalachia; subverting stereotypes and delving into the real life of “Mountain Folk”.

The first issue of Appalachia Comics is set to be released Winter 2025 and then quarterly after with the graphic history getting a release Summer 2026.

Good Trouble Comics produces works of creative nonfiction in the form of comics and visual media. It was founded in 2019 by Andrew Aydin, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Valentine De Landro, Matt Fraction, and Vaughn Shinall.

Longbox Heroes Cancels its Kickstarter Over Tariffs

Longbox Heroes Collection Wave Two

The current stupid economic war and largest tax hike in history started by President Trump has already caused an impact in the geek space. Fresh Monkey Fiction‘s Longbox Heroes which recently launched a Kickstarter for a new wave of figures of popular indie comic characters has canceled the campaign over the recent tariffs being enacted.

The project had raised $50,166 from 481 backers. They had previously launched 10 projects of which 7 were successful and raised over $301,000.

The tariffs would have driven up consumer costs to insane levels as you can read in the announcement below. Expect much more fallout for all of the undelivered projects that are out there.

Longbox Heroes Fans

We wanted to share an update about our latest Longbox Heroes Kickstarter.

As many of you may be aware, recent policy changes have significantly increased tariffs on goods imported from China. These new policies impose a tariff of 50% on our manufacturing costs. Unfortunately, this cost is not absorbed by China—it directly impacts us as manufacturers and, ultimately, you as fans.

This means a single figure would now cost roughly $40 for kickstarter backers once all tariff and shipping & handling fees are factored in.

We don’t believe this is a fair price for the type of figure we are producing, and we know many of you would share our concerns. Given these circumstances, we have made the incredibly tough decision to cancel the Kickstarter campaign.

We had high hopes for this line and have invested a great deal of time and effort into securing the necessary licenses and fine-tuning these figures. However, with so much financial uncertainty, we do not feel comfortable moving into production under these conditions.

No one is more disappointed by this outcome than we are, but we remain committed to finding a way to bring these figures to life at some point in the future. We deeply appreciate your enthusiasm, support, and understanding throughout this process.

Thank you for believing in this project as much as we do.

Best,

Bill & Jason
