IDW and Charlie Foxtrot Entertainment Launch
Code Word: Geronimo Graphic Novel

In-depth retelling of the SEAL Team 6 raid on Osama Bin Laden’s compound

“Engrossing” – the Associated Press

Now available in stores

[Codeword: Geronimo front cover]San Diego, CA (October 12, 2011)—IDW Publishing and Charlie Foxtrot Entertainment have the honor of launching CODE WORD: GERONIMO, an original graphic novel illustrating the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound by SEAL Team 6 on May 1, 2011. Expertly written by military insider Captain Dale Dye (USMC, Ret.) and Dr. Julia Dye, Ph.D., CODE WORD: GERONIMO offers the amazing, moment-by-moment inside story of the clandestine raid that rid the world of this terrorist mastermind.

“We thought the graphic novel just might be the best early venue to keep young people’s attention focused on this outstanding mission,” said Dye. “Julia and I wanted to find a way to shine some well-deserved light on the men and women in both the intelligence and special operations communities that worked so hard to make it happen.”

This historic tribute details the bravery and valor of SEAL Team 6 as it descends into Abbottabad, Pakistan and achieves the near impossible. Joining the Dyes to bring this incredible graphic novel to life are artists Gerry Kissell (The A-Team: War Stories, Iron Sky) [Codeword Geronimo back cover]and Amin Amat (Buckaroo Banzai, Iron Sky). John M. Del Vecchio, decorated Vietnam veteran and best-selling author of the The 13th Valley, also provides afterword material. A portion of the proceeds from CODE WORD: GERONIMO will be donated to the American Veterans Center, a charity supporting military veterans.

“I couldn’t be more ecstatic to have Code Word: Geronimo out to stores and in readers’ hands,” said editor Tom Waltz. “It’s been an incredible journey with this graphic novel — from its initial conception to its release — and I’ve been proud to be a part of the process every step of the way, to include the opportunity now to share it with the rest of the world. I truly believe this is a special book.”

Following an exceptional career in the United States Marine Corps, Captain Dye is now best known as the military advisor to Hollywood for his work on over seventy films, from Platoon to Saving Private Ryan, and Band Of Brothers to The Pacific. Captain Dye is also the acclaimed author of many novels, including Outrage and Laos File.

CODE WORD: GERONIMO ($15.99, hardcover, full color, 88 pages) is now available in comic and book stores throughout.  ISBN: 978-1-61377-097-9

Dynamite Enters Into Agreement With Literary Phenom Amanda Hocking!

Official Press Release

dynamite logoDYNAMITE ENTERS INTO AGREEMENT WITH LITERARY PHENOM AMANDA HOCKING!

LOOK FOR AMANDA HOCKING’S HOLLOWLAND IN STORES EVERYWHERE IN 2012!

October 11, 2011 – Runnemede, NJ – Dynamite is proud to announce that we have reached an agreement with Amanda Hocking and will publish Hollowland comic books in 2012!

Amanda Hocking is an American writer of paranormal romance young-adult fiction. Hocking lives in Austin, Minnesota. Employed as an assisted living worker until 2010, she wrote 17 novels in her spare time.  In April 2010, she began self-publishing them as e-books. By March 2011, she had sold over a million copies of nine books and earned two million dollars from sales, something previously unheard of for self-published authors. To date only five other authors have sold over a million digital e-books.  In early 2011, Hocking averaged 9,000 book sales each day.

In Hollowland, Nineteen-year-old Remy King is on a mission to get across the wasteland left of America, and nothing will stand in her way – not violent marauders, a spoiled rock star, or an army of flesh-eating zombies.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to bring the world of The Hollows to graphic novels,” says acclaimed author Amanda Hocking.  “I’m so fortunate to be able to partner with an amazing publisher like Dynamite to bring this dream to life.”

“It is such a pleasure for Dynamite to be working with Amanda as she knows the world of comics,” says Dynamite President and Publisher Nick Barrucci.  “Amanda’s success shows that hard work and passion pays off and we can’t wait to see her incredible energy translated to comics!”

Here’s what people are saying about Hollowland:

“Anyone who has any interest at all in reading a well-told story needs to read this. It’s fantastic, horrific, and strangely beautiful.” – Robert Duperre, author of The Fall

“The action is non-stop. It starts on the first page and really doesn’t let up at all, but not to the point where you get burnt out on it. And FINALLY we have a female lead that can do things for herself! Remy is strong and courageous and does things her way to survive. There is some romance, but it’s not like all the other romances in supernatural stories where the girl ends up not being able to do anything alone. It was SO refreshing.” – Jessica at The Firefly Book Loft

NEW YORK and COLUMBUS, Ohio, October 11, 2011 – Attendees at next weekend’s Wizard World Mid-Ohio Comic Con will have the unique opportunity to check out the “Huge Glass Comic Book,” the world’s first glass comic book, blown up and lit up on glass.  Each of its twelve pages is four feet high and three feet wide, all laser etched on quarter inch glass.  The Huge Glass Comic Book is registered for three world record claims with Guinness World Records, including first glass comic book, largest glass comic book and largest comic book.  At over 500 pounds of comic pages, it may also be the world’s heaviest comic book.

The event, set for the Greater Columbus Convention Center, October 22-23, features stars James Marsters, Billy Dee Williams, Adam West, Burt Ward, Claudia Christian and Walter Koenig among dozens of celebrities and industry professionals celebrating the best in pop-fi, pop culture, movies, graphic novels, comics, toys, video gaming, television, sci-fi, gaming, original art, collectibles, contests and more.

The comic is a single concise story introducing Comangra City, a place where all the world’s comic and cartoon genres live and interact with each other in a multi-cultural metropolis.  Nearly every country has its own tradition of graphic story.  It’s time these traditions meet, mix and react with each other.  Beyond the story, each page of the Huge Glass Comic Book highlights different graphic storytelling techniques in simple, reproducible ways.  It took over 550 hours to create this comic and, four weeks into its completion, it’s already attracting interest from galleries, educational institutions and even “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!  It’s a one of a kind opportunity to see a first in comics and in art.

Wade Gugino, writer and creator of the Huge Glass Comic Book, will be present to page through the comic with fans and sell print versions of the comic and graphic story layout guide, as well as individual cards, prints and T-Shirts.  This will be the very first public run of the print comic — a limited edition sold out at ArtPrize 2011 in two weeks.

Kickstarter Highlight – Where the Upstart Comic Funder Stands

Leading up to New York Comic Con I thought it’d be fun to do some of my more favorite articles from the past.  This one is where Kickstarter stands as far as funding comic books.  As of last night, the crowd funding system has helped published 304 comic book projects since the first  project was successfully funded in June 2009.  That’s almost 10.5 projects a month since the first and the pace has only picked up in over time.  You can see the increase in successful projects since the first.

But what are the stats?  They’re impressive:

Total Number of Backers: 33,008

Average Number of Backers: 108.58

Total Pledged: $1,565,624

Average Total Pledged for Project: $5,150

Percent Raised vs. Asked: 157.58%

Average Pledge: $47.43

Most Given Amount: $50 at 4,562 times

No matter what you think about crowd funding, those are impressive numbers.

Canadian Creators of Kill Shakespeare Accepted into Prestigious Sundance Story Lab

Official Press Release

Canadian Creators of KILL SHAKESPEARE Accepted into Prestigious Sundance Story Lab

[Kill Shakespeare Volume 2 Cover]San Diego, CA (October 12, 2011)- The Canadian-based creative team of the acclaimed KILL SHAKESPEARE comic book series will descend upon the 2011 New York Comic-Con this weekend to not only release an exclusive sneak peek of their second trade but also announce their invitation to take part in the first-ever Sundance Institute New Frontier Story Lab.

Co-creators Anthony Del Col and Conor McCreery are one of six creative teams to be selected from around the globe to take part in the Sundance initiative, taking place in Park City, UT from Oct 23 – 28th.  During their time at the Lab, Del Col and McCreery will work with award-winning creative advisors to bring KILL SHAKESPEARE – an adventure story that places the Bard’s greatest heroes and villains into the same world and story – to film and other formats through individualized story sessions, conversations about key artistic, design and technology issues, and case study presentations.

“We are really excited about becoming ‘Sundance kids’,” says Del Col.  “If Shakespeare was alive today he would be creating not only stage plays but films, video games, comic books and digital media.  We relish the opportunity to work with Sundance to further mash-up our take on the Bard with access to top screenwriters, video game designers and transmedia gurus.”

The creative team will also be unveiling Kill Shakespeare Volume 2: The Blast of War, which collects issues 7 – 12 of the Harvey-nominated series, at the show.  To be released in early November, the creators – along with series artist Andy Belanger – will be selling and signing a limited number of copies out of their booth (#2844), as well as copies of Volume 1 and their new line of ShakesGeare merchandise.

They are also happy to announce that the acclaimed Kill Shakespeare Volume 1: A Sea of Troubles is going into a third-printing this week due to growing demand for the series.

About the series:

Kill Shakespeare is an adventure story that pits all of Shakespeare’s greatest heroes (including Hamlet, Juliet, Falstaff, Othello, Puck) against the Bard’s most menacing villains (including Richard III, Lady Macbeth, Iago) in a quest to track down and kill – or save – a reclusive wizard by the name of William Shakespeare. Described by the New York Times as “gripping, violent and dark fun,” the series was nominated for a 2011 Harvey Award for Best New Comic Series and received profiles from NPR, BBC, The Washington Post, CBC and Publisher’s Weekly.  It also created controversy in 2010 when Shakespearean scholar (and girlfriend of comics legend Frank Miller) Kimberly Cox railed against the title, while others – such as Des McAnuff (Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Jersey Boys) – are fans of it.

More information about the series can be found at www.killshakespeare.com.

The Infestation Spreads Again

Official Press Release

The Infestation Spreads Again

Epic crossover event returns with bigger threats, more franchises

IDW’s second ground-breaking multi-title event kicks off in January 2012

[Infestation 2 Cover]San Diego, CA (October 12, 2011) – IDW’s ground-breaking, multi-universe event returns in January with INFESTATION 2. As with the blockbuster original, this epic invasion will spread throughout the IDW-verse and into many fan-favorite titles. With INFESTATION 2, tentacled Lovecraftian “Old Ones” reach across time and space and threaten to destroy everyone everywhere and everywhen.

“Last year, we were just figuring out how to do a monstrous event for the first time,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief. “This year, we’re going to build on the monstrous part, both in terms of story, titles affected and the threat itself. So people can expect a bigger event here, with lots of legs. Well, tentacles, anyway. We’ve got great creators and a very exciting plan to give people more of what they liked the first time, with some crazy twists and new properties affected, too.”

Coming in January, the kick off issue, INFESTATION 2 #1, will be written by best-selling novelist and comic-book writer Duane Swierczynski and feature art by INFESTATION/INFESTATION: OUTBREAK artist David Messina. This gripping issue sets the stage for Lovecraft’s “Old Ones” to break through time and space and invade many titles, including TRANSFORMERS, DUNGEONS & DRAGONS, and a special fifth-week one-shot, INFESTATION: TEAM-UP, featuring Bat Boy and GROOM LAKE’s grey alien Archibald in February. Then in March, the Infestation spreads even further, infecting TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES and G.I. JOE. In April, vampires battle zombies in 30 DAYS OF NIGHT: INFESTATION, followed by the stunning closing issue, INFESTATION 2 #2.

Joining Swierczynski and Messina on covers for INFESTATION 2 #1 and #2 will be Alex Garner and Livio Ramondelli. INFESTATION 2 #1 will also feature unique temporary tattoos.

In February, writer Chuck Dixon and artist Guido Guidi will return to the often-requested “Hearts of Steel” timeline for the bi-weekly INFESTATION 2: TRANSFORMERS #1 and #2. Plus, Dungeons & Dragons novelist Paul Krill will introduce a brand-new campaign setting to IDW with INFESTATION 2: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: EBERRON #1 and #2. INFESTATION 2: TEAM-UP will be written by Chris Ryall and illustrated by his WEEKLY WORLD NEWS partner Alan Robinson, and feature covers by Eric Powell and The Simpsons’s Bill Morrison.

In March, Tristan Jones and Mark Torres pair up for INFESTATION 2: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES #1 and #2, while Mike Raicht and Valentine de Landro present INFESTATION 2: G.I. JOE #1 and #2. INFESTATION 2 architect Duane Swierczynski and artist Stuart Sayger will explore the effect of Lovecraft demons on vampires in the INFESTATION 2: 30 DAYS OF NIGHT one-shot.

As a special bonus for fans, every issue of the INFESTATION 2 event will feature a connected cover by artist Livio Ramondelli, and IDW will be producing special incentive temporary tattoos with each issue, too.

Stay tuned to IDWPublishing.com as more creative teams for this epic crossover event are announced. Plus, readers can get a sneak peek at INFESTATION 2 by asking their local retailer about the INFESTATION 2 ashcan, coming in late November and featuring interviews, artwork and information about this momentous event.

INFESTATION 2 #1 ($3.99, 32 pages, full color) will be available in stores on January 25, 2012.

INFESTATION 2: TRANSFORMERS #1 and #2 will be in stores on February 1 and 15, 2012, respectively.

INFESTATION 2: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: EBERRON #1 and #2 will be in stores on February 8 and 22, 2012, respectively.

INFESTATION 2: TEAM-UP will be in stores on February 29, 2012.

Dark Horse Books Collects The Compleat Terminal City!

Official Press Release

THE COMPLEAT TERMINAL CITY

CLASSIC SERIES COLLECTED FOR THE FIRST TIME!

October 11, MILWAUKIE, ORVisionary designer and comics creator Dean Motter (Mister X, Electropolis, Batman: Nine Lives) returns with the purest expression of his patented retro futurism. The Compleat Terminal City collects all fourteen issues of the classic series, originally published in 1996, for the first time.

Terminal City is a place where transistor-tube robots rub elbows with old-time gangsters, where bright, shiny technologies cast deep noir shadows. The city has been in decline since a group of celebrated adventurers—Kid Gloves, the boxer; Monty Vickers, the explorer; Eno Orez, the man of 1,000 faces, and Cosmo Quinn, the human fly—were each disgraced or disappeared into obscurity. Now a series of mysteries involving an unopenable briefcase, a missing link in evolution, a daring lady in red, and an obscene skywriter brings the four men together once again—some on the side of the law, some involved in shady business—with explosive results!

“This is one of the best marriages of story and art I’ve seen in years and an absolute delight to read.”—Alex Ross, artist of Marvels and Kingdom Come

Teaming Motter with celebrated artist Michael Lark (Daredevil, Gotham Central) and cover artist Mark Chiarello, this massive collection reprints the original Eisner- and Harvey-nominated series, along with its sequel, Terminal City: Aerial Graffiti.

The Compleat Terminal City is on sale March 21, 2012.
