Fantastic Four #579

Narrator – Unnaturally enhanced by nanotech, superhuman growth hormones, and regenerative cosmic energy, Natalie X gains control of the entire population of Nu-World, thereby achieving for the first time in human history the thought-to-be fictional socialist state.

Superman: War of the Supermen #4

Lois Lane – One Kryptonian came to Earth and helped make it a better place.  We made hm our greatest hero.  100,000 Kryptonians came and they were seen as a threat.  They were met with suspicion, hatred, and eventually, death.  We — humanity — were incapable of accepting what they had to offer, accepting that change, so we lashed out at them.  Destroyed them.  Someday I hope humankind will be more receptive to change, to living as a “melting pot” of people and cultures.  To set aside suspicions and live together peacefully.  Sometimes that seems like an impossible goal.  For now, though, all we can do is hold to that hope… and let the dream for a better world sustain us.

A thick stack of books this week to cover.

Monthly Comics

Dazzler – After Necrosha, Dazzler must still deal with her half-sister Lois.  There’s a lot of family issues here.  While this isn’t a must read, it’s actually better than the event it spun from.  Most of the one shot is filled with action scenes, but when it slows down and focuses on family issues it really finds it’s heart.

Story: 7.5 Art: 7.5 Overall: 7.5

Doomwar #4 – T’Challa must decide how he’ll take on Doom as Doom continues his game of chess.  What exactly has he been working on, and what can we expect as the next few steps.  This limited series hasn’t gotten much love on the internet, but I’ve definitely enjoyed it so far.  There’s a nice mix of politics and action.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.25 Overall: 8.5

Fantastic Four #579 – I can usually say Jonathan Hickman has brought the fantastic to Marvel’s first family, but something feels clearly off in this issue.  In a clear shot at real world visionaries like Steve Jobs, the issue is about Reed and his visions for the future and humanity.  It’s all a set up for something, but this feels like an unneeded chapter as it’s all been covered before.  Definitely a misstep in what is normal a top notch series.

Story: 6.75 Art: 7.75 Overall: 7

Green Hornet #4 – Kevin Smith’s movie script turned comic book continues to rock.  Britt must deal with the death of his father and his father’s alter ego and Kato must seek revenge for the death of his friend.  To say this series is good is an injustice to it, because it’s beyond fantastic and one you should be reading.

Story: 8.75 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.75

Green Lantern #54 – An interesting direction post Blackest Night. We’ll see where it goes but I’m intrigued.

Story: 8.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.5

Green Lantern Corps. #48– Clearly a set up for Emerald Warriors. A guardian makes a decision about his role in the Corps. Also a nice mystery is set up.

Story: 8.25 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.25

Incorruptible #6 – Mark Waid is a genius need I say more?

Story: 8.5 Art: 7.75 Overall: 8.25

Secret Avengers #1 – A very strong start to a very intriguing new series. Black ops headed up by Steve Rogers.

Story: 8.75 Art: 8.75 Overall: 8.75

Secret Warriors #16 – Overall kind of weak in that it covered so much so quickly. They might of said Moe was the key to the Leviathan vs. Hydra battle.

Story: 7.5 Art: 8.5 Overall: 7.75

Superman: War of the Supermen #4 – The four issue limited series comes to an end as Superman battles Zod.  There’s some cheesy dialogue and parts and at times the art doesn’t match what’s described (the White House was not destroyed, though it was stated it was).  Overall it feels like a weak ending for what was a great start.  Also, the last few pages of Lois’s article about the events paints it more as a tale about immigration, which is a great theme that should of been played up more in the first three issues.

Story: 7.75 Art: 7.75 Overall: 7.75

The Thanos Imperative – The next Marvel galactic epic is about to begin as the cancerverse begins to seep through the fault into the real world as the avatar of death awakens again.  You won’t believe who’s in charge of the cancerverse.  This is such a fantastic beginning to the next epic.

Story: 9 Art: 8.75 Overall: 9

Thor #610 – It’s Thor vs. Ragnarok in an issue who’s point is to move things forward post Siege.

Story: 7.75 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.25

Thunderbolts #144 – Awesome, just awesome.

Story: 9 Art: 9 Overall: 9

Unknown Soldier #20 – Disappointed that this series is ending. More of you should be reading this series.

Story: 8.75 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.5

Dark Wolverine #86 – I missed the second part of tis multi series crossover. Can’t say I’m disappointed about that. Bring on the new series.

Story: 7 Art: 8.5 Overall: 7.

Wolverine: Weapon X #13 – I’m intrigued by the use of Roxxon and the Deathloks story. Are evil corporations the new Marvel go to bad guy?

Story: 8 Art: 8 Overall: 8

X-Force #27 – Cyclops makes the decision to take the fight to the future.

Story: 8.25 Art: 8.5 Overall: 8.25

X-Men Second Coming Revelations Blind Science – The weakest chapter so far in Second Coming.

Story: 7.5 Art: 8.25 Overall: 7.75

Feds Go After 6 Websites

Earlier in the month we brought you news about the FBI going after HTMLcomics.com.  Well now you can add a few more to the list.  ComicBooksFree.com and PlayboyMonthly.com are some of the other sites run by Gregory Steven Hart doing business as Database Engineers Inc. located in Tampa, Florida.

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit asking a federal judge to order Hart to forfeit his domains due to criminal copyright infringement.

In 2009 the FBI began investigating HTMLcomics.com which received 1.6 million visits per day and had 6,630,021 pages of comic books offered.  Throughout the latter half of 2009 numerous publishers contacted Hart and demanded he cease and desist his actions and take down the copyrighted material.  Hart moved on and founded HTMLmagazines.com which hosted boasted magazines such as Maxim and Playboy.

In April 2010 federal agents searched Hart’s home seizing records including a cease and desist letter, hard drives, computers and DVDs with copyright-protected images.

Marvel iPad App Leads to Real World Sales

At Book Expo America Marvel’s Ira Rubenstein claimed that Marvel’s iPad app, which was available on the first day of launch, helped move units in the physical world.  From MediaBistro:

In a BEA panel discussion yesterday, Ira Rubenstein, the executive VP of Marvel Entertainment’s global digital media group, explored the company’s early experiences with an iPad app…

“It’s been tremendously successful, tremendously well received,” he explained about the iPad app. “What we are seeing is that in-app purchases are actually increasing week over week. People are downloading the app, finding content, and downloading more. What we’ve see also with some of the research is that digital books are actually leading to physical purchases.”

While this might be a positive turn of events the proof is in the pudding and numbers need to be released to fully evaluate the impact and if this impact is positive or negative.  Here’s the questions that need to be answered.

  • Of the people who purchased, how many are not regular comic book readers, or returning comic book readers?
  • Of the people who purchased, how many purchase physical copies regularly or irregularly already?
  • For those regular readers, are they purchasing more or less physical product?
  • How many would have not purchased a comic that did if this app were not present?

All of that should lead an understanding if digital sales are cannibalizing physical sales, expanding physical sales or are they two distinct universes with little overlap.  If it’s the former, there’s issues.  If it’s the middle answer, that’s great for everyone.  If it’s the latter then more can be done.

We’ve seen expansion of materials to other media is good for everyone, and digital sales can potentially be just as beneficial.  There was some coattails as far as physical sales with the releases of the X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man and Kick-Ass and we should strive for the same results when it comes to digital apps.  How can apps drive individuals to their local stores?  That’s a question and puzzle we all should be trying to answer.

The above are just some of the small questions that need to be answered.  The potential is there and at this moment digital dsitribution’s impact on the real world can’t be determined, but there is potential for disaster as much as there is for success.  If digital products become the norm and preferred the livelihood of brick and mortar stores becomes endangered and the chain to distribution and printing.  No one wants this and we all need to work together to make sure that’s not the end result.
