Sierra Hahn Joins BOOM! Studios as New Senior Editor

2014 BOOM! LogoBOOM! Studios is leading up to San Diego Comic-Con with ten announcements, the first of which dropped yesterday. Today sees announcement two. The publisher has announced the addition of Sierra Hahn to its staff as Senior Editor, starting in July. Hahn will oversee and develop several of the company’s upcoming original series, licensed comics, and original graphic novels. She will also assist in seeking out new projects to develop into comics. She will report directly to BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon.

Hahn is a former Editor at Dark Horse Comics where she worked for eight years, having edited projects like Buffy the Vampire Slayer by Joss Whedon, the Eisner Award-winning Green River Killer: A True Detective Story by Jeff Jensen and Jonathan Case, and the forthcoming Two Brothers by Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá. The impressive list of creators in comics she’s worked with includes such industry greats as Neil Gaiman, Eric Powell, Mike Mignola, Guillermo del Toro, Gerard Way, and Brian Wood.

Hahn began her career in comics in 2005 at DC Comics/Vertigo, where she served as Publicity Representative under then Vice President of Publicity David Hyde and worked with notable talents like Brian Azzarello, Becky Cloonan, Bill Willingham, Brian K. Vaughan, Jason Aaron, and Cameron Stewart. In 2007, she realized her dream of becoming a comics editor and moved to Portland, Oregon to work for Dark Horse under Editor-in-Chief Scott Allie.

Hahn will begin her new position at BOOM! Studios on July 1st.

Image Comics, Brian K. Vaughan & Steve Skroce announce signing wars

We Stand on GuardIt’s Canada vs. the United States in an international signing tour to promote the release of We Stand on Guard #1, writer Brian K. Vaughan’s first new Image series since the launch of Saga, and a return to comics for legendary Hollywood storyboard artist (and proud Canadian) Steve Skroce.

We Stand on Guard is an action-packed military thriller about a futuristic conflict between Canada and the United States, so in honor of their story, the creators will be appearing together at two different signings, one in each of their home countries.

Vaughan and Skroce will be enjoying Canada Day, July 1st, in the United States, with an epic release party at the world-famous Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles, CA from 7 – 9 p.m.

Then, they’re spending their Independence Day, July 4th, in Canada, at the acclaimed Golden Age Collectibles in Vancouver, B.C. at 1:30 p.m.

Which signing will be better attended? “Nobody knows,” said Vaughan, before warning: “But whichever nation loses will be forced to keep Justin Bieber… forever.”

Both events are free to the public, and the oversized 40-page first issue of We Stand on Guard is priced at only $2.99. Vaughan and Skroce will be happy to sign whatever readers bring—time and lines permitting.

And if you’d rather not pick a side, Vaughan and Skroce will also be appearing together at this year’s Image Expo on Thursday, July 2, on the relatively-neutral ground of San Francisco, at the Yerba Buena Center of the Arts.

Sony and Marvel Find Their Spider-Man and Director

Tom HollandRemember when all those sites in the know said Asa Butterfield was cast as Spider-Man? Guess who ISN’T Spider-Man. That’d be Asa Butterfield.

Today, Marvel and Sony have announced they have cast Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man. The 19-year-old English Actor has mostly been in movies I’ve never heard of including The Impossible, How I Love Now, and the upcoming films Pilgrimage, In the Heart of the Sea, and Back Country, all out in 2015, as well as the television miniseries Wolf Hall.

In the release it said that producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal were impressed with his performances as well as his “complex screen tests.”

Also announced today is that Jon Watts will be directing the film. Watts is an interesting choice (continuing a string of interesting choices by Marvel) and his previous work involves numerous episodes of the televisions series Onion SportsDome and The Onion News Network, and the films Clown and Cop Car. Again, none of which I’ve seen.

The film will be financed and released by Sony and they will “collaborate” with Marvel on a “new creative direction for the Web-Slinger.”

The next Spider-Man film hits theaters July 28, 2017, though the character is rumored to first appear in a Marvel film beforehand.
