Honest Thief and The War with Grandpa Repeat 1 and 2. The Empty Man Debuts at #4
This week looked a lot like last week at the box office. Honest Thief was a repeat in first place. The film grossed $2.4 million for the weekend at the domestic box office. It has a total of $7.5 million domestically. Internationally, the film brought in about $2 million for the week bringing that total to $3.3 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $10.8 million after three weeks.
The War with Grandpa came in second place again with an estimated $1.9 million domestically to bring that total to $9.7 million after three weeks. The film added about $600,000 at the international box office to bring that total to $4.1 million. Worldwide, it’s earned $13.8 million.
In third place was Tenet which earned an estimated $1.3 million domestically to bring the film’s total to $52.5 million. Internationally, the film earned about $6.7 million over the week to bring that total to $289 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $341.5 million after seven weeks.
Based on the comic series from BOOM! Studios, The Empty Man opened in fourth place with an estimated $1.3 million. The film was originally to be released on August 7, 2020, and then delayed to December 4. It was then moved up to this date, more suited due to Halloween and the film’s horror plot. No international numbers have been posted.
The Empty Man may have a rough rime receiving a “D+” CinemaScore. The film currently has a 44% on RottenTomatoes, though the official score is still being tallied.
53% of the audience was male and 53% of the audience was over the age of 25. This, along with the reviews, is another sign the film may have issues as horror films are often driven by women.
With virtually no marketing, it kind of feels like the film was dumped in theaters by Disney who didn’t know what to do with the 20th Century Fox holdover.
Rounding out the top five was The Nightmare Before Christmas re-release. The film earned an estimated $577,000 to bring its domestic total to $1.9 million after two weeks.
In other comic film news…
The New Mutants added $286,000 to its domestic total to bring that to $23.2 million. It dropped from #7 to #10 for the weekend. The international gross holds at $21 million which has the film earning $44.2 million worldwide so far.
18 films totaled $10,046,579 for the weekend box office from 18,420 theaters. That’s an average of $545.42 per theater. The theater count is down from last week’s 19,917 theaters and a far drop from the week’s $621 per.
