Review: Star Trek: Discovery #1
Warp into adventure with this new comic book series that ties into the new Star Trek television show, Star Trek: Discovery. Co-written by Mike Johnson and Kirsten Beyer with art by Tony Shasteen the first story arc is Klingon-centric diving into the background of T’Kuvma.
On it’s own, the comic is an interesting start to a story focused on the Klingons diving a bit into their society, traditions, and even their religion a bit. I’m a casual Star Trek fan, so for me this is all new material and I find it pretty interesting. It also adds a lot to Star Trek: Discovery exploring the background of things and characters that have been touched upon but not gone in depth, it adds a decent amount.
With the first arc being Klingon focused it also has no mention of the Federation or the Discovery crew. So, the comic series is giving us a look at the television series from a different angle. That’s good in that it expands the world but bad as the television show feels more focused on the Discovery itself, so folks coming into the issue based on the title alone might be a bit confused.
The story is interesting though adding a lot into motivations and the history.
The art is good. There’s a lot of detail with each Klingon feeling unique and the locations having both a familiar and alien look about them all. It’s solid work that captures the look and aesthetic of Star Trek: Discovery.
The comic adds to what the television series can’t cover which adds to the story overall. It provides background which has the show make a bit more sense in some ways. It’s a good example of using other mediums to add to a story while not making it vital to a point you are chained to it.
