TV Review: The Flash S3E21 Cause and Effect
Barry goes to extreme measures to stop Savitar; H.R. pushes Tracy Brand to design a trap; Killer Frost returns with an interesting proposal.
The Flash plays with the revelation that Savitar is, in fact, Barry and the team attempt to use that to their advantage and the thought is that Savitar knows things because Barry does. So…. correct that!
That decision results in a mistake and Barry losing his memory. It’s played for a lot of comedic moments that come off ok but odd since the death of Iris looms over all of this, plus there’s the issue of keeping information away from Barry for instance what happened to his parents.
The episode really focuses on what drives Barry. He has a lot on his shoulders and that weighs him down making things a bit more serious than they should be for him. Should they return his memory? Should they let him be? What’s the ripple effect of Barry not having his memory? That all is explored as well as the impact of Barry not having his memory on work. There’s some solid connect the dots because of that. But, why not hunt down Savitar while he doesn’t have his memory and/or powers? Wouldn’t that solve the issue?
By the end of the episode things wrap up and we the viewers are reminded what makes Barry Barry. The hurt and pain helps make him who he is as we discover and that also leads to all of his relationships.
The episode connects the dots in a way that the series has laid out over all of the episodes and in some ways feels like a recap of who Barry is in one episode. It’s not a bad episode but also feels like it’s a bit wasted due to how things resolve in the end. We have a few episode left in the season and this episode feels like things stumble a little bit and doesn’t use its time wisely.
