TV Review: The Flash S2E8 Legends of Today

The Flash Season 2When Vandal Savage attacks Kendra Saunders, Barry takes Kendra to Star City, seeking Oliver’s protection; Harrison asks Jay to test a new serum to make Barry run faster.

This is it, the first of the two part crossover between The Flash and Arrow. And this is an action packed first part that forgoes the previous formula of The Flash mainly on its own, then at the end head over to see the Green Arrow.

What’s even more impressive is how much is packed in to this episode. We get Vandal Savage including some background. We get Kendra Saunders learning about who she is. We get Hawkman. And a story between Harrison and Caitlin? There’s a lot, a hell of a lot, and it flows really well together.

This first part feels like the most “comic” of a live action series we’ve seen since the Justice League live action television film. And, in many ways, the episode is similar bringing together a lot of heroes together to battle it out with a villain of great power.

I think this episode also gives us a good idea of what we might expect in next year’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow which will also bring together numerous heroes and villains.

My one negative thing is Vandal Savage himself. There’s something that doesn’t quite work for the character from my experiences reading about him in comics. Hawkman too also seems a bit off. I think with both they feel a bit too skinny, when I’d expect much larger and muscular men.

The episode is fun, but really it comes down to the second part. This first is the lead up, and they impressively fit in a lot, but sticking the landing is key. For an episode of The Flash it was just ok, but definitely fun.

Overall Rating: 7.6
