TV Review: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. S3E9 Closure

Agents_of_SHIELD_logoWard’s vendetta and plan for revenge against S.H.I.E.L.D. brings the team to their knees, and Coulson proves he will be willing to do anything to settle the conflict.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. does its best Stargate impersonation as the battle between Coulson and Ward heats up.

Ward takes revenge against Coulson which has Ward retaliate and then sends Coulson in a revenge focused rampage as he hunts down Ward. While all that’s happening, Hydra is working on opening up the stones…. and the show has become Marvel’s version of Stargate complete with a military unit in desert fatigues going through the portal.

But beyond the Stargate issue, the whole plot of the story contradicts Captain America: The Winter Soldier. In that film Arnim Zola says:

HYDRA was founded on the belief that humanity could not be trusted with its own freedom.

Well, that’s contradicted here. Continuity people!

The episode isn’t bad, it’s just a lot of action and little on logic. The episode, and the plot as a whole, could be so much more, but unfortunately it just doesn’t quite hold up, especially compared to its Netflix sister series. The series continues to be less than it should, while entertaining at times, it always finds bumps to get in its way.

Overall Score: 7.1

  • Sorry, but how does this contradict winter soldier? According to Malick Hydra exists to bring back an Inhuman to rule. That clearly means not trusting humanity to rule itself and be free. If anything is failing it is the review.

    • Yes, Hydra was founded to bring back the Inhuman to Earth. Zola states that Hydra was founded with that belief that humanity can’t rule itself. So, the first Hydra’s goal was to just bring back the Inhuman from the other planet, it had nothing to do with taking over humanity which is what Zola is stating as is clear from the rest of his quote about the inability to take freedom away. These are two different reasons for their founding. One is to bring an Inhuman back, the other is to take over the planet. If Zola didn’t use the words “founded on the belief” then it would not contradict each other, or at least contradict continuity. But he does, and it does.
