Review: Green Lantern #46

Green Lantern 46Hal Jordan takes a break from trying to find out what happened to the missing Green Lanterns to find a solution for the Black Hand. In his desperation, he turns to Relic to see if there is anyway to stop him.

Green Lantern #46 follows a very interesting reveal from issue 45 about Black Hand being the one who has been turning planets to stone. Hal discovers he has taken power from the source wall and needs a way to stop him. The story ends up becoming a fun clash between Hal and Black Hand but, we just saw this fight happen in the last issue. It feels like a bit of a retread. Black Hand’s power of turning anything he touches to stone creates a good bit of tension in the conflict. Although, the characters involved in the fight stop taking Black Hand seriously as a threat near the end. It feels like a filler issue between a fun reveal in the last comic and a strong tease at the end of issue #46.

The highlight of the issue continues to be the character interactions between Hal and the new crew he has acquired. His ship, Darlene, is especially entertaining with her incredibly dry humor and, what seems like, hate of Hal Jordan. Because the interactions between everyone involved are so well done, this issue remains a fun read.

The artwork is really strong throughout, expect for one panel where Hal’s face looks slightly out of proportion. The space battle and alien characters are well detailed and interesting to look at. The facial expressions are well done and do a lot to really sell how each character feels about the other. Which, most of the time, is a strong dislike. The color work adds great detail as well in scenes where the Black Hand is turning an object slowly into stone.

Overall, this is a fun filler issue setting up the next large story arc in the mystery of where the Green Lanterns have disappeared to. Not much is added to the mystery here but, it is still an enjoyable read because of very solid character moments and entertaining action scenes.
