Review: Wonder Woman #44

Wonder Woman #44 coverWonder Woman is on the trail of Donna Troy, who seeks refuge in London from both Diana and her past. But a new friend may be more trouble than help for the fleeing Amazon outcast!

I’ll get it out-of-the-way and say that Wonder Woman has never been a character I’ve followed or really been interested in. So, my knowledge of her history and past depictions is rather limited. It’s good in that I can review this comic for only what it is, and not be tainted by what’s come before.

The comic? It’s ok. It’s not good. It’s not bad. It just is. Wonder Woman is running around trying to figure out who’s trying to kill her and find Donna Troy. Donna Troy is on the run figuring out who she is. That’s it. Nothing major really happens it feels like.

This comic, and the last couple of issues, written by Meredith Finch, feel like a very drawn out arc. The last three issues probably could be condensed into a little over two issues, which may have increased my enjoyment. The comic is not bad, don’t get me wrong, it just didn’t excite me reading it. I’m sure when the arc is all done, it’ll be a fine chapter, but it didn’t feel like it moved enough along and there are scenes that just feel very drawn and stretched out.

The art by David Finch and Joanthan Glapion is nice, but again nothing that blew me away to the point that I’d recommend you having to check out the comic. Finch is a talented artist, and the art is solid work. I think out of all of the issues since its debut, this is the one where I’ve seen the most impractical and bad design of Wonder Woman’s new armor. But, we do get to see Troy in a more traditional outfit, which is cool.

Overall the issue is ok, there’s nothing bad about it at all. It just doesn’t feel vital for the story arc, and there’s nothing that makes it stand out enough that it’s a “read” or especially a “buy.” Wonder Woman feels like a ship with a destination, it’s just taking a not very exciting route.
