Review: Valhalla Mad #1

valhalla madTheir names are legend: the Glorious Knox! Greghorn the Battlebjörn! Jhago the Irritator! Three warrior gods vacationing on Earth, just looking to get their drink on and have a good time! Join the drunken festivities with toastmasters courtesy of writer Joe Casey and artist Paul Maybury. The new mythology begins now!

We’ve seen Thor and his buddies get together a drink, but I can’t think of a series that has ever been just that. What do those bar crawl look like, and what goes on? Casey tackles that, and what looks like a lot more in this new series, that’s an entertaining to start.

The first issue has our three main characters coming to Earth after an extended time away for what is a bar crawl. That’s about it. There’s no enemies to fight. No dastardly villain to outwit. It’s three people going to a bar, and the reaction of those around them of gods going drinking. It’s beyond original in the concept, and Casey’s writing makes it more intriguing to read. You expect some big dust-up, but…. nothing. It’s anticlimactic in a good way.

The story is helped by Maybury’s art which is rather unique in look with an almost cartoon aspect to it. I like the style, and much like the story, it’s unique enough to make the comic stand out. The character designs are especially unique. I found myself reading slowly not just to pick up on Casey’s entertaining writing, but also see Maybury’s details in each panel.

While the fist issue didn’t completely blow me away, it was more than original enough to get me to want to come back to see where it all goes. I mean, we’re being given an excuse to watch gods drink. What can go wrong?
