Review: EGOs #1
An aging hero risks everything to rebuild his former team – but to do so, he must cross a line with his wife that can’t be uncrossed.
Writer Stuart Moore and artist Gus Storms bring us EGOs #1, a twisted far-future epic. Years ago, The Earth/Galactic Operatives defeated Masse, a sentient, hungry galaxy—but now Masse has returned, consuming entire planets and killing millions of people. Deuce, an aging hero, decides to reform his old team and go into battle to save the day. But in order to do that, he must cross a line with Pixel, his wife and former teammate, an act that threatens to tear apart the life they’ve built together. EGOs sits at the intersection of a mid-life crisis, a galaxy-spanning threat, and the incredibly creative ideas that make sci-fi tales so compelling.
EGOs is the latest of big name and big idea releases from Image Comics, continuing a string of high profile comics. I’m a fan of sci-fi, so to see a new series take on a super hero team in a sci-fi world, from that publisher, I was looking forward to it. After the first issue I came with a general sense that this debut was just ok. There wasn’t anything bad about it. There wasn’t anything that really blew me away.
The story itself reminded me a bunch of Hypernaturals which was published by BOOM!, with a slightly dysfunctional team that saved the universe time and time again in front of the press. Here, it seems the team is much more dysfunctional, and maybe that’s where the interest will really kick up. The ending of the book did pique my interest enough to check out the second issue.
The art by Gus Storms is a nice addition with a style I’d expect in Heavy Metal Magazine. It fits really well with the sci-fi aspect, and the characters each have a unique design and look. The story and art match up well.
Overall, I can’t say the first issue blew me away, but it was enough to get me to come back for a second issue. Hopefully, it’ll gain strength as it goes on.
