Review: The Superior Foes of Spider-Man #7

superior foes of spider-man #7 coverThere’s a reason I named this series as my favorite new series that debuted in 2013 and this issue encapsulates many of them. Focused on the origin of the new Beetle, writer Nick Spencer mixes in his usual humor, action and sly commentary. The issue, and series as a whole, can only be described as brilliant. It’s the Beetle vs. the Glass Ceiling!

Who is the new Beetle? Get  her origin here as we are taken through her life as a kid through how she became a villain. The last issue teased us with just a bit of that, and where Spencer takes the story is just awesome. There’s so much here. Commentary on comic characters in general, gender, society, lawyers and all done with great humor.

Much of that humor is helped brought across by artist Rich Ellis. Ellis takes a cue of the artistic success that is Hawkeye and Daredevil, and applies it to this already excellent series. It works great and the small touches added by Ellis pile on in how it’s all presented. This is a great example of an artist and writer clicking perfectly for a fantastic final product.

Overall, this is a great issue and fine example of why this series has the praise it does. It also is a perfect jumping on point for anyone to check out what the hype is about. As part of the first batch of comics for 2014, it’s release points to a very good 2014. Here’s hoping the rest of the year’s comics are half as good, because we’ll be in for a treat.
