Delisle Wins The Gold Medal at Angouleme; Jerusalem in stores in April
GUY DELISLE WINS THE GOLD MEDAL AT ANGOULEME
JERUSALEM: CHRONICLES FROM THE HOLY CITY IN STORES THIS APRIL—60,000 SOLD IN FRANCE IN TWO MONTHS
This past Sunday at the International Comics Festival in Angoulême, France, Drawn & Quarterly cartoonist Guy Delisle walked away with the world’s most prestigious award for the comic book medium, the festival’s Fauve d’Or for best graphic album for CHRONIQUES DE JÉRUSALEM, beating out 60 other titles. JERUSALEM: CHRONICLES FROM THE HOLY CITY will be published in English and in stores this April. Delisle will be on a ten-city tour for the first time in North America, dates and venues to come. Excerpt and marketing information are available here.
Guy Delisle expertly lays the groundwork for a cultural road map of contemporary Jerusalem, utilizing the classic stranger in a strange land point of view that made his other books, PYONGYANG, SHENZHEN, and BURMA CHRONICLES required reading for understanding what daily life is like in cities few are able to travel to. In JERUSALEM: CHRONICLES FROM THE HOLY CITY, Delisle explores the complexities of a city that represents so much to so many. He eloquently examines the impact of the conflict on the lives of people on both sides of the wall while drolly recounting the quotidian: checkpoints, traffic jams, and holidays.
When observing the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim populations that call Jerusalem home, Delisle’s drawn line is both sensitive and fair, assuming nothing and drawing everything. JERUSALEM: CHRONICLES FROM THE HOLY CITY showcases once more Delisle’s mastery of the travelogue.
Delisle lives in Montpelier, France, with his wife and children. He is from Quebec City and will be on tour in North America from April 24-May 8th. UK rights have been sold to Jonathan Cape.
