Chris Evans is Captain America
Variety has some of the details about the deal currently being negotiated between Marvel comics and the actor to fill the boots of icon comic character Captain America.
The role calls for the actor to star in at least three “Captain America” movies, starting with The First Avenger: Captain America, which Marvel is already planned to hit theaters on July 22, 2011. Paramount will distribute the movie.
Evans would also would reprise the role in The Avengers, which will unite Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and the Incredible Hulk (Edward Norton) in one movie. That film is skedded for May 4, 2012.
We should also expect the character to pop up in various cameos in other Marvel movies. They’ve taken the unprecedented move of tying their films together in one universe and culminating in the Avengers crossover movie.
This will be the third comic book franchise Evans will be a part of. His first was the role of Johnny Storm/the Human Torch which he played twice in Marvel’s two Fantastic Four movies and he will also be a part of the upcoming movie, the Losers.
Hugo Weaving will play the villain, Red Skull.
Some blogs have reported the deal has been finalized and it’s only time until an official announcement.
There’s even a political twist to the story. Chris Evans is the nephew of Congressman Mike Capuano of Massachusetts.
