Archaia Is Off to Emerald City Comicon!

Archaia Entertainment is excited to announce it will be exhibiting at Emerald City Comicon, taking place March 1-3, 2013 at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, Washington!

Several Archaia creators will be on hand to sign copies of their books or promotional items at the Archaia booth #808, including: Andrew E. C. Gaska; Chandra Free; Charles Soule; Dave Marquez; David Petersen; Royden Lepp; Yehudi Mercado.

Special advance copies of the Hawken: Genesis anthology graphic novel hardcover, which is based on the hit online, free-to-play mech game from Meteor Entertainment, will debut at ECCC and be available for sale. Writers Khang Le and Jeremy Barlow will be on hand to sign copies at the Archaia booth and at the Meteor booth in the Gaming Area.

In addition, a promotion through FourSquare will give fans the chance to win a prize pack comprised of autographed copies of Mouse Guard Vol. 1: Fall 1152, Rust Vol. 1: Visitor in the Field, and Hawken: Genesis. Just be sure to check in at the Archaia booth through the FourSquare app on your iOS or Android phone once you’re at the show and you’re automatically entered!

Review – Pantalones, TX: Don’t Chicken Out

Appealing to fans of Adventure Time, The Simpsons, and Captain Underpants, Pantalones, TX: Don’t Chicken Out follows the adventures of a band of misfit kids in a rural Texas town as they try to outwit, outrun, and outprank the ever-vigilant, taco truck-riding sheriff and his giant chicken. Featuring spoof ads and an eye-popping orange casewrap in landscape trim, this book will appeal to boys and girls 5-15…and their Adult Swim-watching parents!

I met Yehudi Mercado at Baltimore Comic Con and decided to check out his previous work Buffalo Speedway, an entertaining read, if you get the chance to check it out. At that convention he told me about Pantalones, TX, a pitch so odd, so weird, I had to read it. I finally had my chance as Archaia has stepped up to the plate putting this entertaining and original comic out into the market.

The comic is weird, just so weird, in a fun way. The story focuses on Chico Bustamante and his attempts at awesomeness. He’s early Bart Simpson with the daredevil aspect ramped up. His nemesis is a taco truck-driving Sheriff of the town Pantalones, TX.

The series of events throughout the comic are bizarre, but had me smiling and laughing throughout. The situations are everything from daredevil events to involving a giant chicken and even a Bar Mitzvah is thrown in.

The series is beyond original with humor that’s perfect for kids or their parents.

The art is solid too, with a kids animation feel that’s been perfected in series like Powerpuff Girls.

Pantalones, TX: Don’t Chicken Out could be one of the most original books of 2013, it’s definitely up there as one of the more entertaining so far. This is a great read, perfectly entertaining for both kids and adults alike.

Archaia Gives Us The Reason for Dragons

Archaia Entertainment has announced the upcoming release of The Reason For Dragons, a new, hardcover original graphic novel from two fresh voices making their creator-owned book debut.

The Reason for Dragons, by Chris Northrop and Jeff Stokely, tells the story of Wendell, a high school outcast who lives a lonely, suburban existence, losing himself in books in order to avoid his distant, motorcycle-riding stepfather, Ted. When the school bullies convince Wendell to venture into the forest around their neighborhood and explore the long-abandoned Renaissance Fair grounds they all believe to be haunted, Wendell is surprised to find a man living in the barn—and even more surprised by the man himself. His new acquaintance seems the definition of crackpot, believing himself to be a medieval knight named Sir Habersham, tasked with the duty of slaying the dragon he insists is wandering the woods. But when Wendell starts hearing rumblings—and listening to Habersham’s stories—he starts to wonder if perhaps it could all be true. In a heartfelt coming-of-age story, Wendell must defy logic in order to follow his heart.

The fantasy hardcover will also contain an Introduction written by Sean Gordon Murphy and a pin-up gallery featuring contributions from fellow Archaia creators Tom Brown, mpMann, and Yehudi Mercado. Sharing color duties with Northrop on The Reason for Dragons is Andrew Elder.

The Reason for Dragons ($19.95, 128 pages, full color, 6.625” x 10.25”, ISBN 978-1936393749) will debut in comic book shops and wherever books are sold in May, 2013.

Baltimore Comic Con 2012 – Highlights of the Show

Comic book conventions have become more fun and entertaining as I’ve gotten to know more creators. It was great to see talented folks like Josh Fialkov, Ron Marz, the BOOM! Studios crew, folks from comiXology, the FUBAR guys and many more people I’ve gotten to know. But, conventions aren’t just about seeing old friends, it’s about finding new talent to help promote. So without delay, here’s the comic book highlights of Baltimore Comic Con 2012!

Creator: Monica Gallagher

Comic: Boobage, Bonnie N. Collide: Nine to Five – Even Rollergirls Have Day Jobs, When I Was A Mall Model

You want an example of a female creator that should be on a high profile comic book right now? Look no further than Monica Gallagher. First, her art caught my eye, then I flipped through a few of the books, every page I read got me to laugh and put a smile on my face. Having read all six comics I bought, I can say, she deserves a bigger audience. How much did I like the art? I bought the cover to one of her books and making sure I purchase the books I didn’t pick up at the convention. I’m not the only one who enjoyed Gallagher’s talent, another who read all the comics purchased was hooked too. Do yourself a favor and check out her stuff right now!

Comic: Schmuck: Bush, Boobs & Brooklyn Edition

For as much as Gallagher’s book celebrated women, this comic by three men, was a brutal take from the other side. Two stories make up this anthology series and both were brutal and honest. The art and story varied in both, but for $3, it was well worth the purchase.

Comic: Buffalo Speedway Vol. 1 – 3

Figgs is a lifer. He’s 23 years old, he’s been delivering for Houston’s Turbo Pizza for eight grueling years, he lives with his dead-beat best friend, Super Cheese, and he’s got a supreme crush on his Friday regular, a rich girl named Pia. Life sucks, but it’s about to get suckier. The day is June 17th 1994. Today the Rockets will battle the Knicks in the NBA Finals, America will host the World Cup and OJ Simpson will lead the LAPD on a slow speed chase…. That description sold me!

Comic: Dames in the Atomic Age

I first saw this book at Tr!ckster this year in San Diego, but my laziness and incompetence made me unable to pick it up. I lucked out and was able to get the graphic novel in Baltimore. The story is a pulp/noir tale involving dames and lightning shooting revolvers. The art looks solid, and I’m just a sucker for this type of comic. I’m beyond looking forward to reading this. I also grabbed All Crime Comics from the same publisher, Art of Fiction. It also didn’t hurt Chris was super nice and shares my fandom of Janet Lee’s work.

Comic: Drones

Lewis pitched the comic as “the war on terror meeting a Las Vegas stage show…. with a goat.” I read the first two issues and can’t wait to read the next three when they’re released.

A Kickstarter anthology that I missed, the simple cover caught my eye and after flipping through the interior, the art looked solid. The graphic novel is a collection of short stories by artists from a wide range of disciplines who all share a love for comics. From Illustrators, Animators, Graphic Design and Comics, we are a group of 16 artist who have came together to create a high quality graphic novel. The result is a 148 page, gorgeous collection of 16 stories in Black & White, 6″ by 9″ graphic novel.

It’s a comic book, about a comic book shop. I didn’t pick up the two volumes, instead I’m waiting for the third volume to hit Kickstarter, then I’ll get all of them at the same time.

ARCHAIA BLOWS INTO THE WINDY CITY FOR C2E2 2012

Over Two Dozen Creators, Two Panels and a Large Booth Highlight the Publisher’s Presence at the Midwest’s Largest Comic Book and Pop Culture Event

Chicago, IL (April 12, 2012) – Award-winning graphic novel publisher Archaia Entertainment announced its plans for the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2) (www.c2e2.com), which includes a 20’ x 30’ display with a huge selection of product for sale on the show floor; hosting over two dozen creators for free autograph signings, including Chad Michael Murray (Everlast), David Petersen (Mouse Guard), Jim McCann and Janet Lee (Return of the Dapper Men), Nate Cosby (Cow Boy), Ramón K. Pérez (Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand), and Royden Lepp (Rust: Visitor in the Field); presenting two panels, one making several exclusive announcements and one to advise aspiring storytellers on proper world-building; and distributing thousands of free giveaways, including single issue comics, mini-posters, and bookmarks. C2E2 will take place April 13-15, 2012 in the North Hall of McCormick Place in downtown Chicago.

In addition, C2E2 will mark the debut of exclusive, limited signed editions of the highly anticipated, all-ages graphic novel hardcover, Cow Boy: A Boy and His Horse, by Nate Cosby and Chris Eliopoulos. Attendees can also obtain the first of four, limited-edition Hawken posters featuring art by Eisner Award-nominated writer/artist Khang Le. Hawken is an upcoming, free-to-play mech FPS developed by Adhesive Games and published by Meteor Entertainment (12-12-12), and Archaia is producing an original graphic novel prequel (March 2013). The other three posters will be distributed at other key conventions later this year, and together, all four posters will join to form a QR code that will lead fans to a special feature when the game’s closed beta release debuts in October 2012.
