Review: X-Men Gold #20

The X-Men’s victory against the might of Scythian has come at a cost…which might kill them all! How can the X-Men survive on a barren planet? You do not want to miss the status quo-altering final page!

Yes, the X-Men are stranded on a unknown, barren planet.  Things are not looking good for our team of mutant heroes, as the opening pages show Storm thinking she is going to die on the planet. Marc Guggenheim does a good enough job setting up the feeling of despair throughout the various members of the X-Men and their situation. They are alone, hurt, and no one would know where to look for them. My only issue is the despair disappears pretty quickly and things seem to fall into place rather quickly for our heroes, and bing bam boom, they get home (spoiler alert). I mean, they JUST crashed in the last issue, and I would have liked to see them dealing with their situation for at a couple of issues at least.  But as mentioned, it all wraps up rather neatly, and too quickly for my liking, which really was a let down for this issue.

The moments between Kitty and Peter came off as a little melodramatic for my liking as well.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy to see them back together as they have always been one of my favorite pairings within the X-Men, and I get they are in a dire situation and may not make it out. But man, the sugary sweet banter and declarations of love were a little annoying….and no, I am not an insensitive robot who ignores emotions, but seeing Kitty really take the reigns in this series as leader has been great, so to see her being so helpless and not really trying to do much (other then stay phased) really took away from the strong, leadership light she’s been cast in.  I’m not saying that a leader has to be cold an unfeeling, but it was a stark contrast to the Kitty we’ve seen from the beginning of this series.

I did, however, really enjoy the art in this book, courtesy of Diego Bernard (penciler), JP Mayer (inker) and Frank Martin (colorist). They all did a very good job of showing us the environment of this barren planet, the threats that are lurking, and the severity of the situation. They character depictions were well done, conveying their emotions and reactions to their situation really well. I’d say the art was definitely the highlight of this issue for me.

Overall, this issue was just ok for me. I do love it when the X-Men go out on a good space mission, and the beginning of this story arc was good, but it definitely did not stick the landing in ending the story.  Yes, the situation was dire, but it all just ended too fast and too neatly for me. I have issues on how easily Nightcrawler was able to figure out their way home, after only being on an enemy ship for a short time, as a captive, and not seeing much of their technology. And the “status quo” altering ending that the solicit promised? Any reader would have seen it coming pages before, so that was also a let down.  The art in this issue was really good, and for me, the only saving grace. Here’s hoping the next story kicks things up a notch and makes this title exciting again.

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors are choosing up to five books and why they’re choosing the books. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Paul

Top Pick: Avengers #676 (Marvel) – Who or what is this Voyager? The statue of the founding members of the Avengers had a new addition to it at the end of Secret Wars, and now Voyager has ‘returned’, with everyone seeming to know her. I wasn’t a huge fan of this when it was done with the Sentry, so this type of ‘introduction’ did make my eyes roll. BUT, I am intrigued in this story; what happened to the Earth? Who moved it and why? And I just love seeing all the various Avengers assembled (LOVED seeing Lightning, formally Living Lightning, again).

All-New Wolverine #29 (Marvel) – I’m loving this ‘Orphans of X’ storyline. It is a scary thought to think of all the people who have been effected by battles involving the X-Men, but even scarier to see them come together so organized to take them out.

Champions #16 (Marvel) – I am just in love with this title, as anyone who has read my reviews can tell. I am partial to the original line up but I am very excited at the prospect of a new member or members joining their ranks. The team has met up with some interesting teen heroes on their past adventures, so I am looking forward to seeing who will step up to the challenge. I just hope this isn’t one of those “interview the newbies but by the end realize we’re fine as we are” issues. I will not be pleased.

Generation X #86 (Marvel) – Yes, I am a glutton for punishment for still reading this book. I just can’t let go of my Gen X’ers and this issue promises the return of an original member. That is really the only reason this title is on my list.

X-Men Gold #20 (Marvel) – I love it when the X-Men go on space adventures, and this latest story has been pretty good. I’m really happy to see lesser used members like Ink and Armor being part of this team, as it makes for a different dynamic. Unfortunately, our team is now stranded on a unknown planet and the solicit promises a big ‘status quo’ altering event at the end of the issue. I’ll definitely be reading to see what happens.

Brett

Top Pick: Days of Hate #1 (Image Comics) – I’ve read this first issue and hours later I’m still reflecting on it. A hell of a start. It’s the future and things have continued to go in the same direction it’s going now. Hate crimes are rampant and there’s a hint about another Civil War. This is a dystopian future that’s all too real.

Fence #3 (BOOM! Studios) – One of the best new series out last year. The comic is about students at an academy in a fencing club. A fantastic mix of sports manga with a western sense.

James Bond: The Body #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Every bruise and scar on James Bond’s body has a story. That concept has me intrigued as to how it’ll translate into a come series. Lots of potential with this one.

Strangers in Paradise XXV #1 (Abstract Studios) – Celebrating 25 years with a brand new series. America’s favorite couple is back!

Transformers: Optimus Prime #15 (IDW Publishing) – Onyx Prime is back!

Shay

Harley Quinn #35 (DC Comics) – Frank Tieri has a good track record writing female characters. Looking forward to seeing what he does with Harley post the Palmiotti/Conner run.

America #11 (Marvel) – The start of the “Midas Wars” and America protecting her homes.

Joe

Top Pick: Curse Words Vol. 2 TP (Image) – Charles Soule and Ryan Browne have done such a great job on this book. For Christmas I like to buy graphic novels as gifts, and the first volume of this series made the list. If you like goofy titles with some great art, look no further than this series featuring Wizord, the wizard with an attitude, and a talking koala.

Mister Miracle #6 (DC Comics) – Tom King and Mitch Gerads have done a great job on this book, and doing it in their own original way. This is a totally different take on the Scott Free you may (or may not) know. This gets us halfway through the 12 issue limited series.

Royal City #9 (Image) – A return to the form that lets Lemire shine. Here he does the art, and the writing and both go so well together. This series touches on small town America, loss, and real family problems that are relatable.

Paul

Top Pick: Phoenix Resurrection #3 (Marvel) – This has been a trippy ride so far, and I am living for every second of it. The nods to X-Men dead and gone, mentions of past writers from X-Men history and a story that has you second guessing everything equals a story that I haven’t really seen before, and I can’t wait for my girl to FINALLY make her return to the Marvel Universe and to see where she’s going to go from there.

Avengers #675 (Marvel) – Something BIG must be happening to bring all the Avengers teams together to face it. I’m excited to see all the teams join forces and curious to see what this new cosmic threat will bring. Maybe erase Secret Empire from our memories? One can hope.

X-Men Blue #19 (Marvel) – The last couple of issues have been fun, seeing the team bounce through different periods of time, meeting alternate versions of X-Men and being told they’re the reason the various times are so dark and bleak. Is it really the fault of the X-Men? I’m still pointing my finger at the furry blue guy who brought them all through time in the first place. But, still curious to see where this all leads.

X-Men Gold Annual #1 (Marvel) – Excalibur reunion! The cover is enough to get me excited for this annual. And look, Brian and Megan are parents, awwww!

Brett

Top Pick: Mech Cadet Yu #5 (BOOM! Studios) – The fact this series has been turned into an ongoing has me beyond excited. On its surface this series is giant robots being piloted by kids, but underneath there’s also a story about class and privilege. A fantastic all ages series that’s one of my favorites being published today.

Action Comics #995 (DC Comics) – Booster Gold and Superman running around time! So far the storyline has had a great retro vibe to it all and there’s the march to issue #1000! Really exciting to see where this series and character is going.

Catalyst Prime: Accell Vol. 2 #3 (Lion Forge Comics) – My favorite of the Catalyst Prime comics is their take on the classic speedster superhero. There’s just something fun about it all and how it’s differing itself from all of the others out there.

Coyotes #3 (Image Comics) – A multilayered story that could be about a young girl fighting werewolves or it could be a deeper story about the exploitation of women and immigrants and fighting against the abuse they endure.

Old Man Hawkeye #1 (Marvel) – I loved the character in the original story and have been wonder how this miniseries will hold up. We’ll find out soon I guess and I’m excited to revisit this future world.
