X-Men: First Class Slips to Second While Super 8 Takes First at the Movies

Bookmark and Share

X-Men First Class Teaser PosterX-Men: First Class slipped to second place for the weekend box office, coming behind the premier of Super 8.  The movie slipped 54.6% and raked in another $25 million for the weekend.  That’s impressive since Super 8 should have played to a similar audience as X-Men.  Super 8 debuted with an estimated $37 million (it cost $50 million to produce).

The movie has earned $99 million in the US and $124.2 million overseas giving it a grand total of $222.5 million.

This week see the debut of Green Lantern which absolutely will cut into X-Men’s audience, so it should be interesting to see how it holds up, but it’s word of mouth continues to be solid.

The television channel FX has announced they’ve acquired the premiere rights to the movie X-Men: First Class according to Hollywood Reporter.  The movie debuted in first place this weekend with a good, but not great take of $56 million domestically.  The movie has gotten excellent reviews from both fans and critics.  The movie will air in late 2013 or early 2014.

“We’ve been on a roll with No. 1s this summer and it’s going to be a film that will work really nice with the stable of superhero movies that we have at the network,” FX executive vp Chuck Saftler told The Hollywood Reporter.

X-Men: First Class Opens Good, But Not Great

X-Men First Class Teaser PosterX-Men: First Class opened this weekend to first place and an estimated $56 million domestically.  The movie opened strong Thursday night even besting Thor‘s opening by opening with $3.4 million from the midnight showings, but fell short of that movies $65.7 million debut.  Even with positive reviews, the movie trailed badly compared to the other X-Men movies.

X2: X-Men United and X-Men: Origins: Wolverine both debuted to around $85 million, while X-Men: The Last Stand brought in $102 million.  The movie did beat the original X-Men film which debuted with $54.4 million in 2000, but if that were adjusted for inflation the movie would be $70 million today.

It’s projected the movie will end with between $140 million to $160 million but it depends how well word of mouth pushes the film.   A good sign is the movie only fell 5% from Friday to Saturday, which is a good sign. So far the new X-Men film has attracted an audience that was predominantly male (58%) and older (54% over 25).  With both positive reviews from fans and critics it’s baffling as to exactly why the movie fell short.

X-Men First Class Teaser PosterI went into X-Men: First Class skeptical, even with the loads of positive buzz leading into it.  I didn’t know what to expect.  It’s a period movie that may or may not be a reboot or is it a prequel?  After seeing the movie, I came out pleasantly surprised and think the movie works pretty well as a prequel to the original trilogy.  The movie’s main focus is on the early relationship between Charles Xavier (played by James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsherr (a stand out performance by Michael Fassbender).  This is all with the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis which is being pushed by the mutant Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon).

The movie is a mix of previous X-Men movies with a 60’s James Bond vibe about it.  It embraces the 60’s, in it’s attitude and how the characters act, which is great.  It owns that it’s a period piece movie.  The story itself has it’s minor issues here and there, but overall it’s solid.  The action comes quickly and the characters themselves are entertaining.  McAvoy and Fassbender especially stand out.  McAvoy’s Professor X has the cocky arrogance you’d expect a younger version of the character to have.  He loves the ladies and attempts smooth lines showing off his intelligence and using his gifts.  Fassbender’s Magneto on the other hand is haunted by the horrors of the past and surviving the Holocaust.  He’s a man on the mission of vengeance to hunt down the people who inflicted horrors upon him and his family and in doing so crosses path with Xavier.

The movie’s heart is these two and if possible, I’d love to have seen the movie focused solely on them.  Instead what could of been a great philosophical debate on humanity, evolution and strength with get glimpses and a lot of action.  But it’s entertaining and fun.  The rest of the cast is decent with some minor exceptions, but overall they’re there to look good, taking away screen time of the focus on Xavier and Magneto.

As I said, there’s minor issues, some characters I could of done without and some scenes we’ve seen before and some glossing over of basic explanations of things.  Overall though, X-Men: First Class lives up to it’s name as a first class movie, perfect popcorn fun for the summer.
