Wonder Woman 3 is a Go with Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot Back

Wonder Woman 1984 is a success in the eyes of Warner Bros. and its parent company AT&T. Soon after the film’s release on Christmas Day, the film studio announced a third film has been greenlit. Director Patty Jenkins will return to complete the trilogy with Gal Gadot starring once again. The film “will have a traditional theatrical release”.

Wonder Woman 1984‘s release had a “strong opening weekend performance” according to Warner Bros. chief Toby Emmerich.

The film opened with $16.7 million domestically from 2,100 theaters and $68.3 million from the international box office. That’s one of the best debuts post-COVID.

The film opened in both theaters and the same day for HBO Max viewers. The film studio said that around half of the platform’s retail subscribers watched the film on Friday. Millions more viewed it through cable or wireless access. HBO Max is reported to have 12.6 million active users.

Those stats exceeded expectations in the first 24 hours on the service and the momentum is expected to continue well beyond that.

It’s unknown when the film will make it into production as Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot are working on a film about Cleopatra from PAramount and Jenkins is set to direct a Star Wars film, Rogue Squadron, which is slated for Chrismas 2023.

Wonder Woman 1984 Lassoes the Top of the Box Office with a Post COVID Best Opening

Despite polarizing reviews and simultaneous opening on HBO Max, Wonder Woman 1984 had a solid post-COVID debut with a reported $16.7 million from 2,100 theaters. That’s the second-best post-COVID opening behind Tenet‘s $20.2 million. The film has also earned a reported $68.3 million at the international box office delivering a worldwide opening of $85 million.

The original film opened in 2017 with with $103.3 million domestically and $228.2 million worldwide beating predictions then.

The current film has made Warner Bros. and AT&T happy as half of HBO Max’s retail subscribers viewing and millions more viewing it through cable or wireless access. The service has 12.6 million subscribers. The film “broke records and exceeded expectations” in its first 24 hours of service and it’s expected to continue to do so. The company has said it is fast-tracking a third film which is expected to have a traditional release.

In second place was another new film, News of the World. That opened with $2.4 million domestically. No international numbers have been released.

The Croods: A New Age dropped to third place earning an estimated $1.7 million domestically. The film has earned $30.3 million after five weeks. Over the week, the film added about $10.4 million internationally to bring that total to $67.9 million. Worldwide, the film has earned $98.3 million making it one of the top-earning films of the year.

Monster Hunter, last week’s top film, dropped to fourth with a drop of 48.9% and earning an estimated $1.1 million. The film has now earned $4.2 million domestically. No new numbers have been reported for international earnings and the film stands at $4.8 million for a worldwide total of $9 million.

Rounding out the top five was another new film, Promising Young Woman which earned an estimated $680,000. No international total is reported.

In comic movie news…

The Empty Man hung on at the box office with an estimated $3,000, an improvement over the past week. The film has now earned $2,995,403. Internationally, the film earned about $15,000 over the week to bring that total to $859,442. Worldwide, the film has earned $3,854,845.

The New Mutants also improved from the previous week with an estimated $3,000. The film has now earned $23.9 million domestically. Internationally, the film earned about $31,000 over the week to bring that total to $22,575,269. Worldwide, the film has earned $46,430,043.

Bowed by Wonder Woman 1984, the box office had an improved weekend with $24,185,695 from 34 films in 13,956 theaters. That’s well above last week’s $7.6 million from 38 films and 14,312 theaters. The average theater earned $1,732.99, well above last weekend’s $530.47. ~~We’ll have an update on these numbers when the final box office tally has been released.~~

Warner Bros. Shakes Things Up with Dueling Releases on HBO Max and Theaters for 2021

It was going to eventually happen but COVID has sped things up as Warner Bros. is making an earthshaking move when it comes to movie distribution. The studio will send 17 films to HBO Max for 31 days, to be released the same day as theaters.

Wonder Woman 1984‘s HBO Max and theater release on Christmas day was just the tip of the iceberg as more are to come.

The studio’s 2021 slate includes The Suicide Squad, The Matrix 4, Dune, Godzilla vs. Kong, and Space Jam: A New Legacy. Other films include Little Things, Judas and the Black Messiah, Tom & Jerry, Mortal Kombat, Those Who Wish Me Dead, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, In The Heights, Reminiscence, Malignant, The Many Saints of Newark, King Richard, and Cry Macho.

The decision will cause an uproar from theater owners who not only lose in this model but are struggling, and will struggle, to stay open due to the pandemic. The decision, according to reports, was not shared with exhibitors and was kept secret at Warner Bros. The studio will likely need to renegotiate with theater chains and offer up something so to as not completely lose their support.

But, something needed to be done. With a still unknown future and COVID vaccination likely to take most of 2021 the release schedule would be shaky and risky to rely just on theaters. Further delays would hurt the entire industry further creating a backlog of productions and likely cutting numerous projects as held up films would take up future release dates creating a ripple effect.

Ann Sarnoff, chair and CEO, WarnerMedia Studios and Networks Group said:

WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar added:

The films will roll at internationally as planned and the decision is focused on the US audience.

Wonder Woman 1984 is Coming to Theaters and HBO Max on December 25

After rumors and speculation, Warner Bros. has announced that Wonder Woman 1984 will be getting released worldwide on December 25th. The film will debut in theaters and on HBO Max on the same day. It will premiere on HBO Max at no extra cost for the first month of the film’s release.

The decision to split the release was due to the ongoing COVID pandemic and an uncertain future. This allows those fans who can go to a theater in a safe environment to do so and those who can not to still experience the film and not miss out without the need to further delay the release. In the end, it’ll be the decision for fans as to what to do.

In the announcement, it was acknowledged by Warner Media CEO Jason Kilar that this was new territory and the success will be measured in new ways as well. In the announcement, it’s mentioned that a little over 4 million fans in the U.S. enjoyed Wonder Woman on the first day. What will happen this way? It’s a whole new world and Wonder Woman is going to help lead the charge.

But, Wonder Woman 1984 will have competition. Disney is releasing the Pixar film Soul on Disney+ on the same day. It’s the battle of digital releases but this time it’s from the convenience of the home with no need to deftly figure out your ticket times for a double feature. It’s all from the convenience of one’s couch this year.

Tenet Takes the Weekend Box Office with $6.7 million. New Mutants Holds on to Second

The total weekend box office was under $15 million as theaters are struggling in a COVID world.

Tenet lead the weekend with an estimated $6.7 million down from the $20.2 million from the previous weekend when it opened domestically. The film has now grossed $29.5 million domestically in its second week.

Internationally, the film is up to $177.5 million where it earned about $30.6 million over the weekend. The film has now crossed $207 million worldwide.

The New Mutants held on to second place with an estimated $2.1 million. The previous weekend saw $3 million dollars over three days and $3.7 million over the four day holiday. Domestically, the film has earned $15.3 million which is only slightly more than the $14 million earned so far internationally. Worldwide, the film has earned $29.3 million.

In new films, The Broken Hearts Gallery from Sony opened in fourth place with an estimated $855,000 domestically.

None of the above is good news.

What’s clear is, we’re in weird times and it’s hard to compare what’s going on with anything of the past. Still, the above is not a good sign for the short term future of movie theaters.

The good is, theaters need not worry about overcrowding and becoming major hotspots for the spread of COVID if no one is going.

The bad is that distributors have no reason to release major films which will not earn their costs back. Instead, we’re likely to see a string of nostalgic re-releases, events, and smaller titles fill the gap leaving theaters to struggle further.

With recent changes to release dates of Wonder Woman 1984 and Candyman, it’s clear studios are seeing the writing on the wall and saying it’s not worth it. For as little as theaters are bringing in, they may come to the same conclusion as well.

Fans everywhere are anxiously awaiting Princess Diana’s next great adventure when Warner Bros. Pictures’ Wonder Woman 1984 arrives in theaters on October 2. But before being transported to the “totally radical” days of neon colors, leg warmers, portable cassette recorders, and hanging out at the mall, DC is getting you ready with a special one-shot comic celebrating director Patty Jenkins’s exciting sequel to the smash-hit 2017 Wonder Woman film.

The first story in Wonder Woman 1984 #1 is a direct tie-in to the upcoming movie and is co-written by Wonder Woman 1984 associate producer Anna Obropta and Louise Simonson, with art by Bret Blevins. When a failed burglary attempt causes a hostage situation at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History, Diana Prince is forced to leave her teenage tour group behind so that Wonder Woman can save the day! But will she be able to bring 10 gunmen to justice and get back to her tour group in time?

The second story is a 1980s flashback by writer Steve Pugh and artist Marguerite Sauvage. In the ’80s, “greed is good,” especially if you have it all! A reckless mastermind has made the ultimate power move by stealing Wonder Woman’s golden Lasso of Truth, and it’s up to Diana and Steve Trevor to get it back before the worst happens!

Wonder Woman 1984 #1 features a powerful and dynamic cover by another great Wonder Woman artist, Nicola Scott. The book arrives at all participating U.S. Walmart retailers by Sunday, September 20, and all open and operating comic book stores and participating digital retailers on Tuesday, September 29.
