It’s Time! Your First Look At X-Men: Battle of the Atom #1!

Marvel has released a first look at X-Men: Battle of the Atom #1! From the creative team of Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Brian Wood, Frank Cho, Stuart Immonen, Chris Bachalo, David Lopez and Giuseppe Camuncoli, comes an event  so exhilarating,  and so groundbreaking that fans will be talking about it for years to come!

Hank McCoy brought the original X-Men into the present in the hopes of changing the course of history and stopping Scott Summer’s mutant revolution before it even begins. But as the young and confused X-Men try to cope with their devastating futures, the team begins to unravel from the inside. And just as mutant civil war is about to hit its boiling point, an unexpected third party comes in to change the game—the future X-Men! They’ve traveled back in time with a warning—the original X-Men need to go back to their rightful time or they will be the final nail in mutantkind’s coffin. They risked everything to come to the past and won’t leave until the All-New X-Men are back in the past.

Beginning in September and ending in October, no fan can miss this 10-part weekly event:

  • Part 1: X-Men Battle of the Atom #1
  • Part 2: All-New X-Men #16

Three X-Men universes collide in the biggest war mutantkind has ever seen, and you won’t believe how it all plays out. One thing’s for sure—no reader will come out unscathed!

Who will become unlikely allies? What is S.H.I.E.L.D.’s master plan? What are the consequences for altering time and space? Most importantly, what will determine the fate of our favorite superheroes?

It’s monumental! It’s earth-shattering! It’s X-Men: Battle of the Atom!

Picks of the Week: Lazarus #1 and 9 other Choices

lazarus01_coverIn a dystopian near-future, government is a quaint concept, resources are coveted, and possession is 100% of the law. A handful of Families rule, jealously guarding what they have and exploiting the Waste who struggle to survive in their domains. Forever Carlyle defends her family’s holdings through deception and force as their protector, their Lazarus. Shot dead defending the family home, Forever’s day goes downhill from there.

That description alone would get me interested in Lazarus, the series that debuts this week from Image Comics. The fact that Greg Rucka writing it cements it as my most anticipated comic for the week. Rucka continuously shows off his skills and mastery of storytelling. The man is easily one of the best writers in the comic industry.

Expect this first issue to sell out.

Here’s the other picks in alphabetical order.

  • Atomic Robo: Savage Sword of Dr. Dinosaur #1 – Atomic Robo is one of the most entertaining all-ages comics out there. It’s Indiana Jones with a robot!
  • Batman/Superman #1 – Um, how can this not be on the list. Jae Lee’s art alone makes it a pick.
  • Hoax Hunters: Case Files #1 – More fun solving mysteries in this entertaining series that mixes Ghost Hunters and Mythbusters.
  • Larfleeze #1 – I’m crossing my fingers this isn’t a one note series like Red Lanterns and wonder how many times “mine” will be said.
  • The Massive #13 – One of the best comics on the market!
  • Mind MGMT #12 – One of the other best comics on the market!
  • Mouse Guard: Legend of the Guard Vol. 2 #1 – The Archaia anthology returns with more awesome tales also great for all-ages.
  • The Wake #2 – Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy = hells yes!
  • Wolverine and the X-Men #32 – The series found its groove again with the last issue. The Hellfire Saga continues!

Review: Wolverine and the X-Men #31

Wolvie and X-Men 31It’s off to school for Quentin Quire, Idie (Oya), and Broo, Hellfire Academy’s newest (but maybe not brightest) recruits. Wolverine and the X-Men #31 marks the start to Jason Aaron’s The Hellfire Saga, in which we get a first-hand look at how Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngster might have looked if Magneto and other badies had ever gotten control of it. And it’s sort of awesome, in a slap-on-the-wrist “I shouldn’t be thinking bad thoughts!” kind of way. After all, when feel of Harry Potter meets the X-Men in a satire soaked issue, things are bound to be exciting and hilarious.

Nick Bradshaw does great work bringing to life Aaron’s quirky script, and he draws a Mystique unlike any I’ve seen before (I think Quentin has it right when he labels it an attempt at the ‘sexy schoolteacher’ look). The issue constantly pits Omega Kid Quentin’s shim-sham antics and new-guy Snot’s laughable grossness (seriously, a mucus sneezing mutant?) against the classroom patience of some of the deadliest super-bads in the galaxy. Though as Quentin points out, why are they all learning from villains who always lose?

Quentin attempts to convince Idie to leave the Academy (she’s there to find out who shot and messed up Broo’s brain), and purposely fails classes from “Introduction to Evil” to “Public Relations for Psychopaths.” Meanwhile, Logan and the X-Men (I mean all of ‘em) are busy searching high and low for the runaways from the Jean Grey School. We learn that Logan is convinced he’s failed the students, a theme Aaron has carried throughout the Wolverine and the X-Men series thus far; I can only hope Quentin Quire—my new favorite up-and-comer, aside from Broo—shows Wolvie what he’s all about, because I don’t want to see an end to this series.

Bradshaw’s art brings a childlike (no, not an insult!) vibe to the comic, something between cartoony and fantastically-realist (it’s hard to pin down literal descriptions of this sort of mainstream Marvel art). Some pages are more detailed than others, and it’s hard to tell that a single artist has worked on the book, since the stylistic representation from character to character is so unnaturally dynamic. However, Aaron delivers a wonderfully written, lighthearted issue with grave underpinnings for the narrative whole. All of this comes wrapped up as a satire of superhero comics (and their archnemeses) in general, for example, mocking the absurd number of times villains fail but still think they’re tough sh*t.

Wolverine and the X-Men #31 is yet another reason why this series is a great addition to Marvel’s current X-Men books, a mixture of gravity and comedy that hearkens back to the Marvel heyday.

Review: Age of Ultron #6 and Wolverine and the X-Men #27AU

Age of Ultron #6

age of ultron #6 coverI’ve been shitting on Age of Ultron. In general, I think the first five issues have been too decompressed with too much of a focus on setting and mood, than moving the story forward. In general, a waste of $20. This week sees the release of Age of Ultron #6 and we finally get the issue I’ve been waiting for.

The plan of action was set last issue. A team is heading to the future to battle Ultron, a sliver of the story in this issue, while Wolverine decides upon his own path, to take out the man who created Ultron, Hank Pym. But, Wolverine picks up a partner in his trip.

The story is fast paced, with the full story in one issue. Wolverine has a mission and whether he goes through with it is concluded within these pages. Something the previous issues seriously lacked.

Throughout the issue, there’s a tense feeling, you have no idea where it’s going or how it’ll end. Debates about what one would do to save another, and the butterfly affect pepper the issue. It’s solid stuff, exactly what I’ve been waiting for.

The art too gets an upgrade. The silly mistakes are gone big improvement from the sloppy work that littered the last five issues.

I’ve been waiting for this quality to find its way to this major event.

The issue ends with one of the most controversial decisions in the history of Marvel comics… …and you’ll never believe who goes along with it!

Wolverine and the X-Men #27AU

wolverine and the x-men #27au coverA direct tie-in to the issue above (read the above one first), it follows Wolverine’s journey in the past. There’s lots of debates about the butterfly affect, a small action can roll into something big. This issue kind of goes out of the way to show that affect, almost a silly bit. We learn a bit more on the “origin” of an X-Men nemesis, which is the silly part, but also get a cool blend of Marvel’s past and present through the use of previous printed material.

I really liked that aspect of this issue, to me, that is what makes the issue a buy. In a S.H.I.E.L.D. facility, we see all the heroes they’re keeping tabs on, and in those panels, we see old panels from classic issues. It’s a really cool idea and great use of blending of the modern and past.

Overall, Matt Kindt brings the solid writing I expect from him. His work is usually pretty amazing and the debates the characters have with each other and by themselves is interesting and fleshes out the thought process of these characters.

My gripes are this. I mentioned Wolverine causes an “origin” in a way of a X-Men nemesis. That part was a bit silly to me and while it’s an attempt to emphasize the butterfly affect, it felt a bit forced. Then at the end of the issue, Wolverine’s partner makes a definitive statement that contradicts their attitude throughout most of Age of Ultron #6, it wasn’t consistent.

Still, it’s a tie-in that adds a bit about motivation and the thought process going on within these characters.
