DC Dice Masters: Green Arrow and The Flash Review: Cosmic Treadmill and S.T.A.R. Labs

In September, the latest DC Dice Masters set, DC Dice Masters: Green Arrow and The Flash will be released. Wizkids hooked us up with ten booster packs and after an unboxing video, I’m now going over groupings of the cards to discuss their playability and how they stack up to previous versions of the characters.

Up next, the common Cosmic Treadmill and rare S.T.A.R. Labs

DC Dice Masters The Flash Green Arrow Cosmic Treadmill Star Labs

Cosmic Treadmill: Antique Shop Discovery (common)

Team: None

Purchase: 4 FIST MASK

Die – Generic / Fist & Mask / Fist & Mask

Level: Treadmill/Treadmill*/Treadmill**

Character Previous Set: None

Reroll up to 2 target dice in your Reserve Pool. For each FIST or MASK rolled, deal 1 damage to target opponent.

Thoughts: On its own, this is an interesting card that I’m still going back and forth about. Doing damage is a good thing, but you’re also rerolling dice, so who knows how well it’d do. Where I can see this being a key is on teams focused on just FIST and MASK energy.

This one really is up in the air as to its usefulness until we see what the rest of the set is like, especially dual energy cards.

S.T.A.R. Labs: Science and Technology (rare)

Team: None

Purchase: 2 BOLT SHIELD

Die – Generic / Bolt and Shield / Bolt and Shield

Level: Test Tube/Test Tube*/Test Tube**

Character Previous Set: None

All your BOLT character dice gain Fast. All your SHIELD character dice get +2D (until end of turn)

*/** Instead, all your BOLT and SHIELD character dice get +2D and gain Fast (until end of turn). (Character dice with Fast deal combat damage before non-Fast characters.)

Global: Pay BOLT SHIELD. Move a Sidekick die from your Used Pile to your Prep Area and field another Sidekick die from your Used Pile.

Thoughts: The ability for the card is good for those using BOLT SHIELD teams and may be a must. What’s interesting to me isn’t the die itself, but the Global which is similar to Prof X in Marvel Dice Masters: Uncanny X-Men. That Global is pay a MASK and move 2 Sidekick dice to the prep area from the Used Pile.

This moves one from the Used Pile to Prep and the other is fielded from Used. While it’s a bit more costly, it also may limit its use by your opponents. Pay a bit more, get a similar ability that works well for BOLT SHIELD teams.

Expect to see some builds featuring this instead of Prof X.

Final thoughts: These are two interesting cards that I can see both getting play. How much will largely hinge on what’s in the rest of the set due to their each focusing on just two energy types. We’ll have to come back for a second look once the full set is out.

The Defenders Get a Team Pack for Dice Masters in March

marvel's_the_defendersIt looks like Team Packs are going to be a big thing going forward for Wizkids‘ Dice Masters game. The company will be releasing The Defenders Team Pack  for the Marvel Dice Masters game in March 2016.

The release will feature 24 cards and 16 dice for eight characters, the usual three cards and two dice we find with starter packs. That also means you’ll likely need to Team Packs to fill up the four dice cards can use (generally). The idea is for players to purchase Team Packs along with Starter Sets to give players what they need to play. Team Packs will retail for $9.99.

This pack will feature the Hulk, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones (and more). Luke Cage and Daredevil are likely to be found in the set. The Defenders is a superhero team in the Marvel Universe which has had various line-ups and they will be getting a show on Netflix that brings together the various Marvel live action series that includes Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist.

Up next for Marvel Dice Masters is the Dr. Strange Team Pack which is scheduled for September, and will be followed by Marvel Dice Masters: Deadpool in October, and Marvel Dice Masters: Iron Man and War Machine Starter Set in January. That’s the first Starter Set not tied to a bigger set release.

DC Dice Masters: Green Arrow and The Flash Review: Deathstroke Guerilla Warfare and Lt. Colonel

Next up is Deathstroke (common and rare). I received the two cards out of the ten booster packs.

DC Dice Masters The Flash Green Arrow Deathstroke

Cost – 6 Fist/Shield and 5 Fist/Shield

Affiliation: Villain

Die – Generic/Fist & Shield/Fist & Shield

1 4 4 / 2 5 5 / 3 7 7

Character Previous Set: DC Dice Masters Justice League

First thoughts: Expensive! With a 6 with fist and shield die to purchase the common and 5 with first and shield for the rare and a total of 6 total cost to field the three levels, this is an expensive die. Much more expensive than the previous version which were 4 or 5 to purchase and 5 total cost to field the three levels.

Deathstroke: Guerilla Warfare (Common)

While Deathstroke is active, when you field a FIST or SHIELD character die, Deathstroke gets a +1A and +1D (+2A and +2D if the character is a FIST and SHIELD) (until end of turn).

Thoughts: For a common the card is expensive for what you get. Yes the stats are high, but I just don’t see this one making the field a lot. I’m reading that ability as a 1 time thing, not for each die fielded since it uses the word die and not dice. If that’s not the case, this gets more useful.

Compared to the previous common with Regenerate, I’d probably take that one over this one.

Deathstroke: Lt. Colonel (Rare)

Synergy – While Deathstroke is active, during your turn, whenever you could use a Global Ability, you may pay FIST SHIELD to search your bag for an action die and roll it. (The rolled die goes to your Reserve Pool.) (Synergy abilities can be used while the character is active, any time you could use a Global Ability).

Thoughts: Yes please!? Holy crap is this card good. A 5 FIST SHIELD to purchase, this is a card I’m going for early in the game. To be able to seek out an action die is potentially a game changer with an impact on turn four. Big Entrance, purchase this next turn, draw this third turn, buy the action die fourth turn. With some action dice being able to swing games, this is a big ability that should mix things up and has me thinking through what action dice I’m bringing.

Final thoughts: The common is a bit blah, but that rare I expect to regularly find in builds. It potentially has a big impact if the dice roll right. Now, to find out what the uncommon is…

DC Dice Masters: Green Arrow and The Flash Review: Green Arrow Robin Hood and Ollie

Up first Green Arrow (common and uncommon). I received three Green Arrows out of the ten booster packs, of which of the three cards, two were foil.

DC Dice Masters The Flash Green Arrow Green Arrow

Cost – 5 Mask/Shield

Team Arrow

Die – Generic/Mask & Shield/Mask & Shield

1 5 1 / 1 6 2 / 2 7 3

Character Previous Set: DC Dice Masters Justice League

First thoughts: All three of the cards have the new Team Arrow marking. This is new to the set, so if you plan on running this team, you’ll be looking at those to use as opposed to previous incarnations of Green Arrow.

Compared to the previous version these two cards are a bit more to purchase, but their fielding cost is the the same. For that increase in purchase price, besides the card text, the stats of the die are a bit better with level 1 and level 2 have 1 more strength and level 3 having 2 more strength.

Green Arrow: Robin Hood (Common)

Synergy – While Green Arrow is active, when an opposing action die targets one of your character dice, you may pay MASK SHIELD to choose a new target. (Synergy abilities can be used while the character is active, any time you could use a Global Ability.)

Thoughts: For a common, Synergy could come in really handy. Basic Action die which could wipe out characters instead could be redirected and I could see this being really handy when hit by Delayed Blast Fireball for instance. Where I can really see this being used is to redirect damage to trigger abilities set off by damage greating a potentially solid combo.

The big question is, will you be facing opposing action dice that target one of yours? If so, this could be a helpful counter.

Green Arrow: Ollie (Uncommon)

While Green Arrow is active, when you field a Mask or Shield character die, Green Arrow gets +2D (if a character dies is MASK and SHIELD he gets +4D instead) (until end of turn).

Thoughts: This is a pretty common ability for cards, field x gain y for your attack or defense. It’s a big defensive gain for a character with really low defense. And without knowing how many dual MASK SHIELD characters there are in the set, it’s hard to say how often you’ll be getting +4D. Compared to the Uncommon in the Justice League set which allows you to spin an opposing character down 1 when fielded, this 6 to purchase die is hard to get too excited about. Still, it’s interesting and while I doubt we’ll see a lot of it, the complete verdict is out as to how useful this will be.

Final thoughts: I like Green Arrow from DC Dice Masters: Justice League, and while this die has the Team Arrow affiliation it doesn’t stack up to whats already been released. The common could find some decent game play depending what the meta is like, but while these two are handy, previous versions for me have much more use.

Wizkids Reveals Dungeons & Dragons Dice Masters: Strahd Rainbow Draft Weekend Details

Dice Masters Strahd ArtUnravel the mysteries of Castle Ravenloft with the Dungeons and Dragons Dice Masters: Strahd Rainbow Draft event!

At Origins, Wizkids revealed a Dungeons and Dragons focused Rainbow Draft event for later this year. Today, the game publisher has revealed the event will take place the weekend of October 8, 2016.

An Organized Play event available to top stores, players will have an opportunity to Rainbow Draft and have a shot at winning limited edition alternate art cards! Just for participating, everyone will receive a Strahd: Master of Ravenloft card and die for use in Dice Masters!

Strahd is a 4 cost lightning bolt character that features Experience and Energy Drain and doesn’t count as an Adventurer. His dice stats are 1/2/2, 1/3/3, and 2/4/3. Those that participate will receive a card, a blank art card, and a die.

Dice Masters Strahd BlankAlso part of the kit is three other cards that are available for individuals to win.

There are five Kobold: Greater Humanoid cards as part of the kits. The card is an alternate art for the card and die released as part of the Dungeons & Dragons Dice Masters: Battle for Faerûn set. The card from that set is popular as it’s a 1 cost die to purchase and features Swarm.

Two Human: Paladin: Lesser Emerald Enclave alternate art cards are part of the kit. The card was originally released in the Dungeons & Dragons Dice Masters: Battle for Faerûn set. It protects your characters from global abilities used by your opponent and allows you to pay to reduce damage you take from a character by 1.

Finally, the winner of the event will get an alternate art card for Magic Missile, a basic action card. A popular basic action card, it can deal damage to characters or players.

Ms. Marvel Gets a Marvel Dice Masters OP Kit

Marvel-MsMarvel-OP-E1Team up with Kamala Khan as she discovers she’s an Inhuman and adopts the identity of her idol: Ms. Marvel. Inspired to do good, she’ll learn the ropes from her hero and stop the Asgardian trickster Loki from ruining her school’s dance!

Wizkids has announced a new organized play kit for Dice Masters, Marvel Dice Masters: Ms. Marvel Monthly OP.

Organized play kits are ordered by stores and include prizes for them to hand out to participants at events. In this case, there’s five Ms. Marvel: Amazing Hero cards, five Loki: Angsty Asgardian cards, and 20 Captain Marvel: Captain Carol Danvers cards. The first two cards are intended to be given out to winners of the event, while the third card is a participation card given out to everyone that takes part. The cards are often alternate art to cards that have already been released, but there’s also completely new cards only available through organized play.

Captain Marvel: Captain Carol Danvers is an alternate art card for the common card released with the Marvel Dice Masters: Civil War set. She may only be blocked by bolt character dice and character dice with Resistance. At a seven cost, she’s pricey, but the art on this card is awesome.

Ms. Marvel: Amazing Hero also uses the die from the Marvel Dice Masters: Civil War set. The card is a new one and looks like you spin the die up one level when you field a character with the Avenger team affiliation.

Loki: Angsty Asgardian is a new card as well and uses the die from the Marvel Dice Masters: Civil War set. The text is hard to make out but it looks like the card’s ability involves the Avenger team affiliation and taking damage during the turn. My guess is Loki doesn’t take damage, but that’s only a guess.

DC Comics Dice Masters: Golden Age Superman Monthly OP

Join Superman in the fight against some of his first super villains including his monstrous double, Bizzaro, and the tormenting trickster, Mr. Mxyzptlk, in DC Comics Dice Masters: Golden Age Superman.

Wizkids has announced a new Dice Masters organized play with three new cards featuring classic art from Superman comics.

The organized play kit has stores putting together events in order to get players to regularly come in and those who participate receive prizes for participation and depending on what place they come in.

This kit features three cards, Bizarro: Golden Age Superman, Mxyzptlk: Golden Age Superman, and  Thrown Car: Basic Action Card. The first two are prize support with the last being participation prizes.

Bizarro looks to be a new card that halves something…

Mr. Mxyzptlk looks to have you drawing cards until you get a Villain die with the rest going into your bag…

Thrown Car is a bit of a spin on Enraged which was found in the AvX set and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles set.

Marvel HeroClix: The Superior Foes of Spider-Man Pre-Release Cancelled

Wizkids has announced that they are cancelling their Marvel HeroClix: The Superior Foes of Spider-Man pre-release event. The company was notified that the recent train derailment near Panhandle, TX on June 28 contained some of their product onboard.

Two individuals died in the accident and a third is presumed dead. Our thoughts go out to their friends and families who lost loved ones.

The product on the train included the Marvel HeroClix: The Superior Foes of Spider-Man set intended for Wizkids’ upcoming Pre-Release events. Because of this, they are unable to fulfill orders for this event and must cancel until further notice.

While a sizable amount of the product release will be in an unknown state for an unforeseeable time, their current plan is to proceed with the launch of the product as scheduled as they have sufficient quantities for all stores who have preordered to date and the majority of the product is unaffected.

This set may be hard to get in the foreseable future though.

Wizkids’ Dice Masters Justice Like Lightning OP Features Thunderbolts

Dice Masters Villainous Pact OPBaron Zemo has recruited the Thunderbolts, disguised the villainous team as heroes and deceived the public into thinking they are good. In Marvel Dice Masters: Justice Like Lightning Organized Play, decide your future as a hero or villain on the tabletop.

The latest announced Marvel Dice Masters organized play event features prizes of Marvel’s villains turned heroes (to some of them turning villains again).

The event features three new cards, Villainous Pact, Ant-Man: Tiny Regret, and Baron Zemo: Citizen V.

Villainous Pact is a Marvel version of a basic action card that came with the DC Dice Masters Justice League set and also the participation prize for the set. Show up and you’ll walk away with at least this. There’s no difference other than the art. This is the first time a basic action card has been “reprinted” like this which is cool.

Dice Masters Ant-Man OPWhat’s great about this is that this card now allows you to draw a card through a basic action card if you’re playing a “Marvel only” game. More options!

Ant Man: Tiny Regret is one of the prizes for this set and uses the die from the recent Civil War set. It brings Teamwatch to a Thunderbolts team which allows you to spin an opposing die down 1 level when you field a Thunderbolt team member. The one Thunderbolts character where this could be a good combo with is the recent Black Widow: Widowmaker and Black Widow: Mistress of Pain, both of which are from Civil War. That character allows you to KO a die with a 0 fielding cost when Black Widow is fielded. So, spin dice low enough, and you can take advantage of this combo.

Dice Masters Baron Zemo OPThe second prize is Baron Zemo: Citizen V which also uses the die from the recent Civil War set. The ability for the card is rather simple in that it gives other members of the Thunderbolts a +1A when it’s fielded.

A combo for this is Songbird: Reformed Villain which is a potentially unblockable character and getting that extra damage can be all the difference. Also, spinning down your opponent’s dice with Black Widow, this one may put things over the top to knock out opposing dice. Finally, add in dice boosts like Venom: Abandoned the Stinger, and you’ve got even more potential damage heading towards your opponent. Short version, this card gives a little extra oomph to a Thunderbolts team.

It sounds like this is just the first part of a multi-part arc, so hopefully we see the Thunderbolts fleshed out even more through organized play. This is a solid start though.
