Review: Eternal #1 (of 4)

Eternal_001_coverAIn a world of clones, the Human Liberation Army wants to free people from New Life’s grasp. Their leader Gail will take the most drastic, personal measures yet to do so. Rathmann, a former homicide detective turned New Life enforcer, is on the case, and is asking tough questions. Violet, a young girl and one of the few non-cloned humans—or Pures—is longing to enter the real world. But she has no idea the danger she is stepping into.

Talk about being thrown into the action. Writer William Harms throws the reader right into the tick of it with Eternal #1. And as such, the reader is forced to piece together what’s going on and what this world is about.

Like an action movie that dives right into it, we’re presented a high-octane sci-fi tale that feels a bit like a Fast and Furious film mixed with Neil Blomkamp. That’s not a bad thing as its lots of fun. With raids, and talk of Pures, and DNA harvesting, it not only draws you in, but also begins to present some interesting philosophical questions, something that science fiction excels at doing.

Harms is helped with the art of Giovanni Valletta which solidly mixes the sci-fi and action aspect. There’s lots going on in numerous scenes, and Valletta’s style brings out the kinetic feel of it all. Its particularly helped with some of the choices on how to present the panels as far as perspective. It’ll be interesting to see how the art pans out over the next four issues.

Overall, the series has a great concept, some cool art, and a hell of a start for a first issue. For folks interesting in science fiction, or action films, it’s well worth picking up and checking out the first issue.

William Harms (Impaler, Infamous) is crafting a gripping, sophisticated story about what happens if science completely changes the rules of life itself. This is a story where characters’ ethics and loyalties are tested, for society has changed but human failings remain the same. The next step in humanity is brought to glorious life by Giovanni Valetta (Dark Horse Presents).

Leave Someone at the Altar and You’re in for a Shotgun Wedding

Mike Stone wants nothing more than to marry the woman of his dreams… but the last woman of his dreams wants nothing more than to stop him. This April, the new Shotgun Wedding miniseries from Top Cow‘s Minotaur Press imprint will give you a slice of vengeful wedding drama to look forward to each week, all month long.

William Harms and Edward Pun introduce an assassin named Mike and his smart, sexy, 2nd-grade-teacher fiancée, Denise. Mike loves Denise more than anything in the world, but Chloe—his first fiance who got left in the lurch—has been plotting her revenge.

In a release Harms said:

Grosse Pointe Blank is one of my favorite movies. I absolutely love the balance it strikes in tone between Martin’s job—killing people—and how he struggles to reconcile that with the rest of his life. Ever since that movie came out, I’ve been wanting to write a story about an assassin and then one day a little lightbulb went off in my head and I thought, Imagine if an assassin was going to get married, and on that very special day, all of his enemies showed up… and one them was his ex-fiancée.

All four issues will come out in April, one a week and will each be available for $3.99. The first issue in the four-issue miniseries Shotgun Wedding arrives in stores on 4/2 and can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code FEB140515.

Shotgun Wedding #2 can be pre-ordered using Diamond Code: FEB140516 and will be available on 4/9. Shotgun Wedding #3 can be pre-orded using Diamond Code: FEB140517 and will be available on 4/16, and Shotgun Wedding #4 can be pre-ordered with Diamond Code: FEB140518 and will be available on 4/23.
