Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays (and Tuesdays) are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this week.

Animal Castle Vol. 2 #3 (Ablaze) – It’s a new take on the classic Animal Farm and the art is amazing.

Antarctica #1 (Image Comics/Top Cow) – Hannah secures a job at the Antarctic station to search for her father and stumbles headfirst into a conspiracy that threatens everything she’s ever believed. We’re intrigued by the mystery.

Astrobots #3 (Massive Publishing/Whatnot Publishing) – The art has been amazing for this series about a robot society. The story too is great, focusing on the revolutionaries that see the corruption.

Con & On #1 (AHOY Comics) – Follow an ensemble cast of media pros and fans down through the decades of America’s most colossal comic book convention! Perfect to get us pumped for SDCC!

Dark Ride #7 (Image Comics/Skybound) – The series has been a fantastic horror ride and we can’t wait to find out more about what’s going on.

Eight Limbs (Humanoids) – Joanna, a retired Muay Thai champion, takes in a troubled foster teen and decides to train her… until the teen lands herself in a dangerous situation and Joanna must re-enter the ring to fight for her new family! We’re here for the Muay Thai.

Fishflies #1 (Image Comics) – The Free Comic Book Day teaser of this new Jeff Lemire series had us scratching our heads, so we definitely want to check out this debut.

Gargoyles: Dark Ages #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Return to the long-lost era when humans and Gargoyles lived in harmony but the peace is threatened.

The He-Man Effect: How American Toymakers Sold Your Childhood (First Second) – A new graphic novel by Box Brown about how marketing targeting children in the 80s impacts them today.

Kaiju No. 8 Vol. 7 (VIZ Media) – With Isao defeated, No. 9 fuses with the director general and takes on Kafka, Kikoru, and Narumi! Will they be able to defeat No. 9 and save their fearless leader?! We’re pumped to see what happens next!

Knight Terrors #1 (DC Comics) – After last week’s releases, the main series of this summer event kicks off here!

Sirens of the City #1 (BOOM! Studios) – New York City. 1980s. Runaway teen Layla struggles to survive on the mean streets, far from home. We’re excited for this series that says it “shines a light on bodily autonomy in a patriarchal world.”

WildC.A.T.s #9 (DC Comics) – The series has been full of action and a hell of a lot of fun.

World’s Finest: Teen Titans #1 (DC Comics) – We’re down for this retro series focusing on the early Teen Titans.

X-Men: Days of Future Past – Doomsday #1 (Marvel) – Wondered how it all happened? Find out here!

WildC.A.T.s #8 delivers alternate world action

Another world is dying. Grifter may just be its last hope, but things aren’t looking too good for him either. Luckily, his trusty teammates will stand by his side until the end. Meet the new WildC.A.T.s: Green Arrow, Robin, Savant, Scarecrow, Maul, and Midnighter. WildC.A.T.s #8 mainly focuses on Grifter’s journey as he must do battle for the slim chance he can make it back to his world.

Written by Matthew Rosenberg, WildC.A.T.s #8 continues the wild ride mainly focusing on Grifter’s story. Lost on another world, he’s now part of a resistance fighting against the Halo Corporation and hoping he’ll be able to find a way home. Rosenberg delivers a lot of action as the battle begins and is able to pack a lot in as well. We quickly learn a lot about these alternate world versions of familiar characters, each slightly different than what we know. And we get some fun surprises and twists as the battle progresses.

What’s great about WildC.A.T.s #8 is the fact there’s the opportunity to shock and do anything. These aren’t the heroes we know, so they can die if need be or just act a little out of character. But, what Rosenberg impressively delivers is heart. There’s a punch at the end of the issue as the mission sort of reaches its goal. But, there’s also more than enough pages to deliver twists on our world as who has been “attacking” the Halo Corporation becomes clear and the masks come off… or really get put on in this case. The series has been a fantastic build in this way with every issue filled with action, humor, heart, and surprises.

The art by Danny Kim and Michele Bandini is solid. With Elmer Santos on color and lettering by Ferran Delgado, the issue delivers every beat so well. The humor really gets punctuated by body language while the action is a bit of a throwback to classic Image. It mixes old and new in a way but feels very at home in DC.

WildC.A.T.s #8 continues a series that’s one of the most fun on the shelves. It’s able to mix so much together and make it work. After years of what feels like false starts, this series has cracked the code of folding in the Wildstorm Universe and the DC Universe and make it seem like it was always the case. A comic to look forward to with every release.

Animal Castle Vol. 2 #2 (Ablaze) – The series has been a fantastic adaptation and take on the classic Animal Farm.

Battle Chasers #10 (Image Comics) – After such a delay, Battle Chasers is back after a Kickstarter promising its return. Joe Madureira isn’t providing art so without that, such a long time, and more, will the return be worth it?

Black Panther #1 (Marvel) – It’s a new era and new creative team for the character and the status quo is an intriguing one.

Captain America: Cold War Omega #1 (Marvel) – The event wraps up and we have no idea how it’ll shake out when it’s over.

Dead by Daylight #1 (Titan Comics) – The video game gets a comic adaptation.

The Ghost of Kyiv #1 (Tokyopop) – The war propaganda gets a comic series. It’ll be interesting to see how this gets spun.

Haunt You to the End #1 (Image Comics) – A ghost story set at the end of the world. The concept of ghost hunters plus an unstable time period should make for an interesting read.

Intertwined: Last Jewish Daughter of Kaifeng #1 (Fairsquare Comics) – In time for Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month as well as Jewish American Heritage Month, fan-favorite series Intertwined is back with a 64 page special dedicated to the only Asian Jewish character in comics: the new Spirit of Water!

Klik Klik Boom #1 (Image Comics) – Meet Sprout, a mute assassin who communicates exclusively through polaroid pictures. Sprout is heading to New York City to avenge her grandfather’s muder.

Magic Planeswalkers: Noble #1 (BOOM! Studios) – A new set of releases that’ll take us to different realms in the Magic Multiverse from different creators and featuring different creators.

Night Fever (Image Comics) – A new graphic novel from Ed Brubaker, Sean Phillips, and Jacob Phillips. Enough said.

Nuking Alaska (Graphic Mundi) – A graphic novel about the threat of nuclear war in the 80s.

Spider-Man: Fake Red (VIZ Media) – Yu’s new high school is kind of awful. He’s failing his classes and striking out socially. Everything changes when he finds one of Spider-Man’s costumes abandoned in an alleyway

Spider-Man India #1 (Marvel) – The cult favorite character gets a miniseries shining the spotlight.

Void Rivals #1 (Skybound/Image Comics) – Kicking off “The Energon Universe,” the comic is the official start of Transformers and G.I. Joe at Skybound!

Waller vs. Wildstorm #2 (DC Comics) – The first issue waw fantastic, again bringing together the Wildstorm universe with the DC Universe with Waller at the center doing her shenanigans.

WildC.A.T.s #8 (DC Comics) – The series has been so much fun delivering a new mix of the classic characters and really bringing them into the DC Universe.

Xino #1 (Oni Press) – A new sci-fi anthology series featuring some fantastic creators.

WildC.A.T.s #7 begins the search for Grifter

Grifter is dead? Yeah, we know that’s not the case, well, not likely, but his teammates don’t know what’s happening. WildC.A.T.s #7 not only kicks off the search for Grifter but also shifts the series a but making it clear that the the call is coming within the house. Something’s rotten with the Halo Corporation.

Written by Matthew Rosenberg, WildC.A.T.s #7 tells two stories. The first is what’s happening to Grifter. Having killed Void, he’s now being shuffled throughout the multiverse being sent from world to world where he’s fighting to survive. Then, there’s his teammates who know he’s not dead, they just don’t know where he is. They also know something is up with their former employer.

Rosenberg does a great job of balancing the two stories. There’s some good action throughout, but what stands out is Rosenberg’s focus on the characters and their personalities. Each stands out in their own way and between the situations they’re in and their banter, you get a comic that’s fun to read. There’s a pacing to the dialogue and what’s said that’s hard to not enjoy the comic. There’s a level of comedy that really emphasizes who this team is, who these characters are, and makes it stand out from the other DC team comics.

Rosenberg also does an amazing job of making characters who really are shitheads be likeable. There’s a sense that the team doesn’t necessarily like each other but will still defend each other when attacked. They’re dysfunctional family and in a way, the readers are sucked in to be a part of that family.

The art for WildC.A.T.s #7 is a bit off this issue though. Danny Kim and Christian Duce trade off on the art and the two styles are very different and it’s noticeable. One handles the team’s story while the other handles Grifter’s and Grifter’s segment feels… off. There’s something that doesn’t quite pop to it, it’s an issue with the entire comic where the art doesn’t quite have the energy that we’ve seen in other issues. With color by Elmer Santos and Tony Aviña and lettering by Ferran Delgado, the comic has a look that feels more thrown together than flowing. There’s some panels and moments that are great but overall, something about the flow and how it all comes together doesn’t quite work as it has.

WildC.A.T.s #7 continues a great series. It’s done a fantastic job of working in classic elements in new ways and folding the characters into the greater DC Universe. It’s also willing to throw some wild ideas and moments out there that keeps readers on their toes and create a reading experience that continues to be fun with every issue.

Amazing Spider-Man #25 (Marvel) – Marvel’s teasing some big stuff in this one, so don’t miss out Spidey fans!

Daughters of Snow and Cinders (Fantagraphics) – Fleeing the fires of her war-torn homeland, a young woman travels to the New World in search of gold to rebuild her life.

Disney Villains: Scar #2 (Dynamite) – The first issue was fantastic filling in some of Scar’s unknown story from The Lion King.

Dog Knight Vol. 1 (Feiwel & Friends) – Frankie is saved from a friendly golden retriever from bullies and wakes up in a giant doghouse and tasked to prove they posses the six dog virtues of loyalty, kindness, honesty, justice, stubbornness, and smell.

Extreme Venomverse #1 (Marvel) – It’s the Summer of Symbiotes and this is a small piece of that big puzzle that’s going on.

Gatsby (AWA Studios) – A new take on the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel.

Ghostlore #1 (BOOM! Studios) – We’ve all heard of ghost stories… but what stories do the ghosts themselves tell us? Ghosts telling ghost stories? Written by Cullen Bunn with art by Leomacs? Yeah, we’re in.

Green Lantern #1 (DC Comics) – It’s a new status-quo for the Lanterns, Hal Jordan, and John Stewart and it’s a fantastic start.

The Nasty #2 (Vault Comics) – The first issue was an interesting spin on the horror genre about a group of kids wanting to save their video store and going to make their own scary movie.

Samurai Doggy #6 (AfterShock) – The series has been an entertaining story but it’s the visuals that have us really excited to check out each issue.

Something Epic #1 (Image Comics) – Outside our perception, creative thought takes physical form, with only a handful of individuals known as Epics able to interact with this wondrous hidden world. It sounds like an intriguing idea and we’re excited to see how this one plays out.

Spirit World #1 (DC Comics) – From the pages of Lazarus Planet: Dark Fate, a new Chinese hero emerges who’s able to travel to and from the Spirit World, the realm of the dead, and that of the living. We’re always excited to check out new heroes and ideas.

WildC.A.T.s #7 (DC Comics) – The series has been a wild ride that fans of the characters should enjoy and this latest issue begins to lay out the conspiracy as we’re not sure who we can trust.
