Review: Vampblade #6

Vampblade_issue6_cover_C copyVampblade’s in for the fight of her life… instead of facing more mindless monsters, an all-new super deadly sword wielding foe crosses blades with Katie. Who or what is Mom Spaceknight, and why is she unleashing cosmic hell on our cosplaying slayer?!

Well that is a surprise to say the least. Vampblade #6 is filled with action and information. That includes why Mom Spaceknight is so determined to stop Vampblade, at any cost.

Like previous issues, this issue doesn’t skimp on the fourth wall breaks and humor. I will admit compared to earlier issues, this issue is more focused on the human element. That’s in contrast to showing walls of strange, vampire, space worm things.

Review: Vampblade #5

Vampblade_issue5_coverAKatie Carva continues to discover more about the Vampblades, but a girl’s gotta eat, so why not dine and slash?! Just when she thinks she’s figured out how to take on the invisible-but-deadly Glorkian face-feeders, they go and get all next level on her!

The high energy, and quick pace seen in the first four issues of Vampblade continues after a month off. Written by Jason Martin, the issue manages to introduce another new character, briefly, known as MOM SpaceKnight. Either a tribute, or parody of another semi-well known comic book character ROM, it’s hard to tell how serious to take it. The issue leaves you with an ending that makes you want to know what happens next.

While new character MOM Spaceknight is introduced, Artist Winston Young manages to make the ROM inspired character highly original. Though were left with a lot open as to the origin of the suit. Both creators do manage to share in a subtle and brief prologue that the suit belongs to Katie’s mom, but that’s what we’re left with. At least I think it’s someone who looks a lot like her mom, anyway. Long, lost twin sister? Forgotten cousin, who knows? All I know, is I want to know more.

Review: Vampblade #4

Vampblade_04-covers-3Now that Katie has learned more about Vampblade, and why killing space vampires feels oh so good, it’s time for both to return to the other-dimensional nest to score a big hit. Can Katie pull off her bold double life gamble, and if she does hack her way out of this showdown with the grotesque parasitic horde, will she be irrevocably changed?!?

Vampblade #4 finishes this story arc and we’ll have some time until the next as issue #5 will be coming out in June. Katie seems to develop a lot more in this issue as she becomes more comfortable with her Vampblade alter-ego. This issue does reveal a surprising secret about the space worms and how long they have been around. More surprising is who reveals the secret, as it is one of the last people you would think of. I’m curious to see how they continue this series.

The art is well done and manages to include a subtle meta moment as Katie reads an old Vampblade comic from the 90’s. It’s an impressive but simple moment of fourth wall breaking. I will admit I love the concluding battle between Vampblade and the strange space worms. It is fluid, violent, and action packed.
