Picks of the Week: Superman Unchained #1 and 9 other Choices

superman unchained #1 coverI’ve been a bit down on Superman since the launch of DC’s New 52. In general, I think the existing series lack something, though not quite sure I can put my finger on it. Some writing is just incomprehensible and others lack the wonder and excitement I’m looking for. That’s why I’m intrigued by Superman Unchained #1 from the team of writer Scott Snyder and artist Jim Lee. That team alone makes this a “buy” and one of the highest profile comics this week, probably this month.

With it being Superman’s 75th anniversary and a new movie out this week. I’m crossing my fingers this is the Superman comic I’ve been waiting for from a team I know can turn out amazing stuff.

  • American Vampire: The Long Road to Hell #1 – It’s American Vampire how is that not reason enough to purchase this!?
  • Bravest Warriors #9 – One of the  most consistently funny comics on the market. Great for kids and adults.
  • BubbleGun #1 – Aspen’s latest series is an anime like sci-fi adventure. Cool premise and interesting art.
  • Ghost Town #1 – My favorite so far of Action Lab’s Danger Zone line. The concept is terrorists with the ability to time travel.
  • Six-Gun Gorilla #1 – Simon Spurrier + BOOM! = awesome!
  • Supurbia #8 – It’s super heroes mixed with a soap opera and it is fantastic.
  • Thor: God of Thunder #9 – Easily one of the best Marvel NOW! series. Not great for new readers, but an amazing story. Definitely should be read from the first issue.
  • Thumbprint #1 – Joe Hill’s latest comic series!
  • The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys #1 – Gerard Way’s latest comic series!

Picks of the Week: Bravest Warriors #8 and 9 Other Choices

Bravest-Warriors-8-cover-B-Nick-EdwardsThere are few comics that get me to laugh each and every issue. Bravest Warriors is one of those comics. This comic might look like it’s for kids, but the subversive humor is anything but. With moments that get me to say “holy shit” then laugh out loud (literally laugh out loud, people stare) the comic has it all in a crazy package. From the creator of Adventure Time, the series is the sci-fi cousin of that popular series. Featuring a team of adventurers to stories are bizarre and beyond entertaining.

  • Bravest Warriors #8 – see above
  • Avengers #11 – One of Marvel’s best, the series seems to be merging many corners of the Marvel Universe, like the New Universe. For die-hard fans only, the series is thick with continuity, but also a threat that’s “Avengers worthy”
  • Batman #20 – The last issue before Zero Year. Batman is still dealing with the loss of his son.
  • Chin Music #1 – A new Image series that looks to continue the streak of hits. Shaw is a man on the run and lost in time. Fleeing ancient enemies, Shaw finds himself in prohibition-era Chicago surrounded by gangers and demons alike and caught between law enforcement and the local supernatural underground. The comic is a tale of mysticism and violence like nothing you’ve experienced before.
  • Grimm #1 – Based on the popular television series. I’m expecting a possible hit from non-regular comic readers.
  • Star Wars #5 – Brian Wood has given us a new and interesting Star Wars story devoid of years of continuity and history.
  • Supurbia #7 – Super powers + soap opera = awesome!
  • Thor: God of Thunder #8 – Jason Aaron has been giving us an awesome Thor and the art is some of the best out there.
  • Uncanny Avengers #8 – The series started off slow, but has been getting better. The tension between mutants and humans is the main focus and something missing from most of Marvel NOW!
  • The Walking Dead #110 – Do I really need to push this one? The series is a cultural phenomenon and one of the few with crossover fans from outside comics. A true success in bringing in new readers from a new entertainment venue.
  • X #1 – The return of Dark Horse’s gritty anti-hero.

Marvel NOW! Premiere Hardcover Collections To Include Codes For Bonus Digital Editions

AllNewXMen_Vol01_HCMarvel has announced that the first volume hardcover collections included in the Marvel NOW! initiative will now include codes for bonus digital editions of these same collections, all at no additional cost. Customers can redeem the codes on Marvel.com, and then the free digital collection will appear in the My Comics section on both the Marvel Comics app and online in the Marvel Digital Comics Shop. This initiative begins with All-New X-Men Vol.1: Yesterday’s X-Men Premiere HC, on-sale in March.

David Gabriel, SVP of Sales, Publishing & Digital Media has stated:

We’ve seen an overwhelmingly positive response from retailers and fans to the digital codes included—at no cost—in many of our monthly comics and select graphic novels. The universal support and praise for this initiatives makes it clear that including these codes with our books drives customers into comic stores on a repeated basis.
