Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

motorcrush01_coveraWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Logan

Top Pick: The Wicked + The Divine #24 (Image Comics) – Last month’s experimentalism was pretty fun and it was nice to finally see Kevin Wada do some interiors, but it will be nice to see Jamie McKelvie’s take on the brave new world for the Pantheon now that Ananke is out of the way.Motor Crush #1 (Image)- The creative team of the always fun and adorable Batgirl reunites on a creator owned title. It will be exciting to see Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart, and Babs Tarr with full creative freedom in this new Image release. Plus biker gangs are cool.

Motor Crush #1 (Image Comics) – The creative team of the always fun and adorable Batgirl reunites on a creator owned title. It will be exciting to see Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart, and Babs Tarr with full creative freedom in this new Image release. Plus biker gangs are cool.

Deadman: Dark Mansion of Forbidden Love #2 (DC Comics) – I can’t wait to be drawn into the wonderful Gothic world and web of relationships in Deadman #2. Plus queer love triangles are all too rare in mainstream comics.

Midnighter and Apollo #3 (DC Comics) – Midnighter fighting demons to save Apollo is the kind of romance-driven ultraviolence that I’ve come to expect from Steve Orlando’s work on the character. I’ve really been enjoying Fernando Blanco’s panel layouts too.

Conan Omnibus Vol. 1 (Dark Horse) – One of my favorite writers (Kurt Busiek) on one of fantasy fiction’s most iconic characters.  I wasn’t reading comics when his original run came out, but can’t pass up this 472 page feast of blood, guts, swords, and sorcery.

Alex

Top Pick: Voracious: Feeding Time #1 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – I’ve already read the Kickstarter  reward pdf, but this week marks the first chance those who didn’t back the project get to read the comic, and I’m excited for you. The entire series has been phenomenal up until this point, and I can’t wait for you to read this comic.

Faith #6 (Valiant) – This is one of the most entertaining comics from any publisher right now, and on any other week this would be the comic that’s on top my list to read first, but this is also the week that the second Voracious miniseries begins. That being said, I fucking love Faith.

Ninjak #22 (Valiant) – A standalone story is something we’re seeing less and less in comics these days, so that’s one reason I’m looking forward to this issue of Ninjak. The other is that this will likely be the calm before the storm, and I’m curious to see what Matt Kindt has in store for us here.

Superman #12 (DC Comics) – Superman versus Frankenstein? Hell yeah!

The Unworthy Thor #2 (Marvel) – I must admit, I do enjoy a good redemption story, and the first issue was great. My only reservation on the series as a whole is that I hope Odinson doesn’t get his old hammer back.

Joe

Moon Knight #9 (Marvel) – Wow this comic is crazy. Literally. What is going on with Marc? I mean Jake? I mean… you get the idea. With each comic this series gets more and more confusing, but I am a big Lemire fan and trust his storytelling. This book is at its best when you’re not questioning it. Sit back and enjoy the trippy Egyptian ride.

The Unworthy Thor #2 (Marvel) – Odinson and Beta Ray Bill space road trip! When we last saw these two in the first issue, Odinson is given Bill’s hammer and told there is another Mjölnir out there. Also, where the heck is Asgard?!

The Wicked + The Divine #24 (Image Comics) – While I think the magazine of Pantheon was a cool idea, I am glad we will get back to the fantastic story. I feel like it has been forever since we got a regular issue and it has been too long considering what happened!

Midnighter and Apollo #3 (DC Comics) – This is a great series. Basically you get a version of Batman and Superman with the twist that they are together romantically. Their relationship is not cliche, and is believable and I love these characters. The only downside is for now this is only a miniseries that runs six issues.

Batman #12 (DC Comics) – The twist with Catwoman in the last issue has me excited to see where the fourth part of “I Am Suicide” goes. Unless he is toying with them, Batman may have just been outsmarted, at least for a moment. I love this version of Catwoman so far.

Brett

Top Pick: Motor Crush #1 (Image Comics) – The creative team of Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart, and Babs Tarr alone is reason enough to get this comic. Seriously that’s all I need to see and I’m in to check out the series.

Atoll #1 (Creative Mind Energy) – This comic has had some issues with publishers and I’ve been waiting for it to finally hit shelves and folks to check it out. It feels right at home with torture porn horror in many ways, but unlike those types of films this story had me sucked in wanting to see what happens next. Writer Tim Daniel and artist Ricardo Drumond nail it with this first issue and I can’t wait to read the next.

Invisible Republic #13 (Image Comics) – The series followed a journalist seeking the truth about an uprising and this second story arc is more about the fallout concerning all of that as we get a better look at Earth and its relationship with the rest of humanity’s reach. In today’s political climate this sereis feels more relevant than ever.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #1 (Marvel) – The break out character is getting her own series!

Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye: Revolution #1 (IDW Publishing) – Revolution is winding down and we’re getting a better sense of how it all fits together.

Review: The Unworthy Thor #1

the_unworthy_thor__1Odinson’s desperate search to regain his worthiness has taken him out into the cosmos, where he’s learned of the existence of a mysterious other Mjolnir. This weapon of unimaginable power, a relic from a dead universe, is the key to Odinson’s redemption – but some of the greatest villains of the Marvel Universe are now anxious to get their hands on it as well. Can The Odinson reclaim his honor, or will the power of thunder be wielded for evil? The quest for the hammer begins here.

Marvel really shook things up in what feels like ages ago when they changed the iconic wording of Thor’s hammer introducing a new champion and proclaiming Thor Odinson unworthy of Mjolnir. Flash forward years later and a second Mjolnir now exists in the Marvel Universe thanks to Secret Wars providing Thor a chance to reclaim his mantle. But is he worthy? Has he found redemption? Will he find redemption?

That’s the heart of this new series which will send Thor on a quest claim this hammer before others can do so themselves. And it’s a solid start as we see Thor as broken and dejected as you’d expect. He lacks direction and is pretty down on himself.

The comic has is an interesting one in that it feels more like a sci-fi series than fantasy and that’s with the issue kicking off with Thor fighting Trolls… on the moon! And that awesome tone is thanks to writer Jason Aaron who has shied away from the stereotypical fantasy take on Thor we’ve seen in the past instead giving us a blend and a sci-fi fantasy feel. And “feel” is a keyword here as Aaron gets us to really feel for Thor and the position he’s in. He’s at his lowest point and you can absolutely tell that by every word spoken.

But, what I like most is Aaron really pulling in a lot of the Marvel Universe in some cool ways. A mysterious being is put forth to send Thor on his quest and the issue ends with another being from Thor’s past as well. It’s a fun take that is forging something new while giving nods to the past.

Olivier Coipel‘s art is absolutely fantastic. Coipel is one of my favorite artists currently and my only gripe is that the art is a bit dark at times. Still, it’s beautiful to look at and as much fun to linger on the pages as it is to read Aaron’s words. Just great action and a vibe and mood that oozes off the page.

I had no idea what to expect going into this and I want more immediately after reading it. This feels like the start of an epic Thor story and I can’t wait to see what Aaron has up his sleeve.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

southernbastards15_coverartaWednesdays are new comic book day!

Joe

Top Pick: The Unworthy Thor #1 (Marvel) – Odinson returns, and he’s not worthy! I’ll skip my hopes for a Wayne’s World crossover and instead remind everyone they should be reading The Mighty Thor. While I watch people argue over whether a woman should be Thor or not, I’m reading one hell of a tale being penned by Jason Aaron who is also doing this book. Going all the way back to Original Sin, Thor, and then The Mighty Thor, Aaron has been building us up to this point and it is finally here!

Southern Bastards #15 (Image) – I am so excited for this series returning, and yes this is the second Jason Aaron book on my list. You should get Southern Bastards in trade if you haven’t or get the single issues if you can because I cannot wait to see where this story is going to go. It’s violent, it’s dark, it’s corrupt, it’s infuriating, and I love every minute of it. Boss BBQ not included with this book.

The Wicked + The Divine #23 (Image) – Another one of my favorite series returns. After the enjoyable one shot that showed some of the Pantheon from years past, we finally return to our current group. That last issue was pretty crazy. I’m excited to see how things pan out for our pop star gods. Also it’s Gillen and McKelvie. Nuff said.

Batman #10 (DC Comics) – “I Am Suicide” continues and I’m excited to see what Tom King does with the interesting team that Batman set up last issue. We also get the man who broke the Dark Knight’s back, Bane as he works with Psycho Pirate. Will we get another classic battle between Bats and Bane? I hope so! Either way, I’m always excited for Batman.

Nightwing #8 (DC Comics) – This run of Nightwing has been a pleasant surprise for me since it started. Seeley really needs to be applauded for his work on this book. The last issue sets up something very big, and thank god for the two week releases because we get to quickly see what Raptor is up to. This is one of my favorite Rebirth titles.

Alex

Top Pick: Faith #5 (Valiant) – Almost any given week you’ll see a Valiant comic here, and this is no exception. Faith is one of my favourite series being published right now and this issue sees the debut of the fantastic Meghan Hetrick on art, making this probably my most anticipated comic this week.

Batman #10 (DC Comics) – Batman has to infiltrate a prison. Santa Prisca prison, where Bane makes his home. This could be fantastic.

Cryptocracy #5 (Dark Horse) – The super secret government that we never knew about is slowly (and publicly) unraveling. One family’s top agent is trying to stop that, but keeps running up against creatures that were previously just urban legends… this series is far from your traditional superhero type of story, and has really surprised me so far.

Green Lanterns #10 (DC Comics) – This is probably my favourite book that DC are publishing right now, in part because of the chemistry between the two leads, but also because of how easy it is to fall into the story because if, like me, you’re new to the world of the Green Lanterns, then you can figure out what their all about with the universe’s two newest Lanterns.

The Unworthy Thor #1 (Marvel) – I’ve always been a sucker for redemption stories, so a six issue story about (hopefully) that is going to be intriguing. While I hope that Jane Foster remains Thor for a little longer, I’m not surprised to see the Odinson on a quest for a different Mjolnir – I only hope that he doesn’t end up with his old hammer.

Brett

Top Pick: The Sheriff of Babylon #12 (Vertigo) – This is it. Everything comes together (hopefully) in Tom King and Mitch Gerad’s series about a murder in Iraq during the American occupation. The series has been a gripping read and possibly one of the most brutally honest takes on the US occupation. Easily one of the best comics on the shelves this week.

Bitch Planet #9 (Image Comics) – After a break, the series is back and it continues to mix entertainment with politics in one of th best comic series out there.

Muhammad Ali (Dark Horse) – A graphic novel biography about one of the great athletes and icons of all time? Yes please!

Occupy Avengers #1 (Marvel) – David Walker takes on this new team which seems rather interesting. But, so many years after the Occupy movement, is it relevant? We’ll see!

Southern Bastards #1 (Image Comics) – One of the best comics returns. This Southern noir look at racism, football, and small town politics, is absolutely amazing. So happy it’s back.

Thor Odinson is Back in The Unworthy Thor

This fall sees the release of The Unworthy Thor written by Jason Aaron with art by Olivier Coipel. The series will explore Thor’s captivity at the hand of the Collector and his journey to again becoming a hero. The comic series is meant as a companion to The Mighty Thor which stars Jane Foster as Thor.

Aaron has said the series will see where he’s prisoner, why, and what’s going on post-Secret War. It also picks up the revelation that there’s a second hammer and this is Thor’s request to find it.
