Review – The Darkness #87

Bookmark and Share

The Darkness #87 COVA_stampedJust an amazing issue.  The Darkness #87 is a stand alone that takes a break to look at one of the many forces out to get Jackie Estacado and stop the Darkness force.

Just as the Brotherhood of The Darkness existed to serve the interests of The Darkness on Earth, another cult has existed in secret serving the needs of The Angelus on this world. Now armed with a legendary weapon crafted from the heart of a sun itself, a servant of the cult within Jackie’s inner circle moves to end the Estacado line once and for all.

If you don’t know anything about the Darkness or it’s characters, this is still a highly enjoyable comic.  Really the premise is simple.  A person is trained their entire life with one mission.  When it comes time to commit that mission, what happens when they realize the evil they’ve been trained to fight isn’t so bad.  If your action created the risk of creating a worse evil, would you still take it?

That’s the basic set up here.  It adds a ton to The Darkness, but at the same time can be taken as a simple tale about indoctrination.  It’s simple and very effective.  A straight forward story that gets you to think what you’d do in that situation or if it’s a decision you’ve already made.

Beyond solid and entertaining, a definite buy.

The Darkness: Four Horsemen #2 COVA_stampedThe four horsemen are on the warpath in a small town and Jackie Estacado has to stop them.  This series is so twisted with each depiction of the horsemen just being as depraved as it needs to be.  One had me gagging a bit, and that’s impressive.  It’s brutal but The Darkness: Four Horsemen #2 is a fun read.

Jackie Estacado has arrived in the California desert town of Ginsberg, where Hell has come to Earth. The Demon Riders have brought out the worst in the townspeople and Ginsberg burns. Jackie believes he has faced monsters before, but nothing like this.

The Darkness: Four Horsemen #2 is published by Top Cow, written by David Hine with art by Jeff Wamester.  It picks up from the first one with further descriptions of each horseman’s power and the terror they have been causing on Ginsberg.  And let me say, it’s twisted.  One scene and descsription makes the glutton scene in Se7en look tame.

The issue continues to build the scene for the eventual drag out fight and that’s ok.  Hine’s description of the horsemen is entertaining enough and Wamester’s twisted mind puts it all on paper for us to be repulsed and giggle at the same time.

The Darkness #86 COVA_stampedSo, did The Darkness always have this aspect of God in it?  The Darkness #86 is the second part of Alkonost storyline.  Jackie is captured by an individual who wants to collect him.  We learn out why, which I didn’t see coming and also why Jackie is seeing visions of his sister.

Alkonost, Part 2 of 2!
In the hunt for The Sovereign Jackie and crew strike a deal with an insane Russian mobster and collector of the occult, but his supernatural enforcer wants to add a Darkness wielder to the collection. What is The Alkonost and how does it control even The Darkness itself?

Top Cow Pit artist Sheldon Mitchell (Pilot Season: Stealth) joins regular writer Phil Hester (Gen13, The Anchor) for a sinister two-part story. Featuring a cover by Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire)!

The story is interesting and definitely kept me on my toes.  My biggest issue is I felt like things needed to be expanded more, and this story might of been helped by expanding it to a third issue.

There’s a lot going on, including a new factor in the Darkness world (at least I think it’s new, I’m new to the series, give me a break).  There’s a strange mix of religion with the Darkness and one I’m not positive fits perfectly.  Also, once we learn what’s really been collected, it seems to be too powerful of an object to just be hidden away.

I’ve generally enjoyed the Darkness but this issue while entertaining came off as rushed and not completely fleshed out as much as it should have been.
