Free TCAF Digital Comic Available Again for a Limited Time Only

Earlier this year, the Sequential digital graphic novel app for iPad and The Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) gave away free copies of the TCAF 2015 Digital Comics Anthology, an over 50-page digital anthology featuring brand new, specially-commissioned work on the theme of Toronto or TCAF from a range of comic artists including: Noah Van Sciver, Hunt Emerson, Barbara Stok, Elaine M. Will, Joe Decie, Simon Moreton, Margreet de Heer and Kristyna Baczynski, with Charles Burns’ poster art as the cover.

Due to high demand, TCAF and Sequential have decided to make the anthology available for download again until the end of June.

For each free download of the comic anthology Sequential will be making a contribution to TCAF, supporting the festival’s mission to promote great indie comics and creators and help advance the medium.

The anthology also features a gallery of TCAF posters from Seth, Darwyn Cooke and many more.

The free Sequential iPad app now features a special section featuring creators who were exhibiting at TCAF 2015, with discounts of 50% or more of many of the books.

Toronto Comic Arts Festival Official Anthology Gets the Digital Treatment From Sequential App

Sequential and The Toronto Comic Arts Festival have announced that the TCAF 2015 Digital Comics Anthology will be created and distributed for free exclusively by the acclaimed graphic novel and comics app for iPad.

The Anthology is out now and features brand new, specially-commissioned work from a range of comic artists including Hunt Emerson, Barbara Stok, Noah Van Sciver, Margreet De Heer, and Joe Decie. All the comics are themed around TCAF and Toronto, and all the artists will be appearing or exhibiting at this year’s TCAF. The Anthology, which runs to over 50 pages, will be completely free for a limited time, available only via the iPad app which is itself free to download from the App Store.

2015 marks the tenth TCAF festival, which was founded as a biannual event in 2003, and since 2009 has been held annually at the Toronto Public Library’s Toronto Reference Library branch. In 2014, more than 22,000 people attended TCAF events, with over 400 comics creators from 15 different countries as well as a range of exhibitions and programmes. This year is the first in which a digital anthology is part of the Festival package.

The 2015 TCAF Digital Comics Anthology is out now on Sequential and will be available as a completely free download until May 11th.

Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2015 Announces Guests and Details

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2015 has started to announce some of the guests that’ll be attending this year’s show. Over 300 cartoonists from Canada and around the world are on their way to Toronto this May, to celebrate the very best in comics, graphic novels, bandes dessinées, and manga! A week-long Festival of readings, launches, and art events culminating in a massive, FREE two-day exhibition at Toronto Reference Library, May 9th and 10th, 2015! The Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2015 takes place Saturday May 9, 9am-5pm, and Sunday May 10, 11am-5pm, at the Toronto Reference Library, 789 Yonge Street. Attendance is FREE to the public.

For more than a decade, The Toronto Comic Arts Festival has showcased the incredible comics art being made here in Canada, and invited the attention of the international cartooning community. The 2015 programme continues to build on those successes, with an increase in programming, and a renewed focus on Canadian cartoonists from coast to coast!

TCAF 2015 will welcome a remarkable array of authors! Highlights from the author guests include:

Charles Burns: Creator of Black Hole, one of the most important graphic novels of all time, Burns will be at TCAF to celebrate his recently completed new graphic novel series X’ed Out (Pantheon Books).

Eleanor Davis: An outstanding cartoonist and editorial illustrator (The New Yorker, New York Times), Davis’ recent graphic novel release How To Be Happy (Fantagraphics) is one of the best graphic novels of 2014, and TCAF is thrilled to welcome this cartoonist to Toronto.

Gurihiru: This dynamic cartooning duo hails from Tokyo, Japan, and is beloved in North America for their original graphic novels set in the universe of Avatar: The Last Airbender (Dark Horse).

Lucy Knisley: A long-time supporter of the Festival, Knisley’s memoirs and travelogues are well-loved across the continent. Knisley attends as a Featured Guest in 2015, in support of her new travelogue/graphic novel Displacement (Fantagraphics).

Scott McCloud: Creator of the essential comics text Understanding Comics, TCAF will welcome McCloud to Toronto in support of his acclaimed new graphic novel The Sculptor (First Second Books).

Barbara Stok: Hailing from The Netherlands, Stok has an impressive collection of graphic novels to her credit. TCAF is happy to welcome her as a Featured Guest of the Festival in 2015, in conjunction with her debut English-language graphic novel release Vincent (SelfMadeHero), an important and critically-praised biography of Vincent Van Gogh.

Jillian Tamaki: With her cousin Mariko Tamaki, Jillian Tamaki’s 2014 TCAF Debut This One Summer (Groundwood/First Second) took home a Governor General’s Award, a Caldecott Honor, and a Printz Honor. In 2015, Jillian Tamaki will release SuperMutantMagicAcademy (Drawn & Quarterly), her hilarious new graphic novel.

Chip Zdarsky: Hometown favourite and emerging international superstar Zdarsky (a.k.a. Steve Murray) is welcomed as a Featured Guest for 2015! Best-known for his ground-breaking comic series Sex Criminals (with writer Matt Fraction), spring 2015 will see the launch of his new series Kaptara (Image Comics) with fellow Toronto illustrator Kagan McLeod, and a relaunch of Marvel Comics’ Howard The Duck.

And these are just the first nine featured guests among the more than 300 Canadian and International cartoonists participating in the 2015 Festival.  Featured guests will continue to be announced through February and March, with special guests from France, Italy, Germany, Japan, and the U.S. and Canada still to be revealed!

TCAF 2015 will also feature several programming spotlights, including a special tribute to esteemed Canadian graphic novel published Drawn & Quarterly, on the occasion of their 25th Anniversary. Additional Programs will be announced in February and March, including the CSSC-SCEBD Academic Conference, Library & Educator Day, Word Balloon Academy, Comics Vs. Games 4, Gallery Showings, Screenings, and much more.

Self Made Hero creators at Toronto Comic Arts Festival 2014

SMH_logo_smlAs the Toronto Comics Arts Festival prepares for its 2014 international celebration of comics and graphic novels, SelfMadeHero, the independent UK publisher of graphic novels, is attending with a number of its top creators from Britain and Europe.

British writer/ illustrator I.N.J. Culbard has built up a reputation for his H.P. Lovecraft adaptations and his latest book, Celeste, is his much anticipated first original sci-fi work. Eisner-winning UK artist Nick Abadzis, now resident in New York, has collaborated with author David Camus on The Cigar That Fell In Love With a Pipe, an imaginative take on Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth’s relationship at the time of the release of The Lady from Shanghai.

Berlin-based Reinhard Kleist, who made an impact with his graphic novel biography of Johnny Cash, tells the life of Holocaust survivor and champion prizefighter Harry Haft in The Boxer. Kleist will be in conversation with Alan Scott Haft, grandson of Harry and author of the biography on which The Boxer is based, at the Goethe Institute in Toronto on Sunday May 11 at 3pm.

Abel Lanzac and Christophe Blain are the creators of the bestselling political satire Weapons of Mass Diplomacy, based on Lanzac’s experiences as an advisor to former French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin. After selling half a million copies in France, the book was adapted into a successful movie under its original title,Quai D’Orsay (distributed in North America as The French Minister).  All of the listed books are published by SelfMadeHero in Spring this year in both the UK and US.

The creators will take part in various talks and events throughout the weekend.

TCAF runs May 10–11 2014.
