Review: Suicide Risk #23

sr23covIt would seem as though the creative team behind this series heard the phrase “go big or go home” and thought to themselves that they can do better than that.  At the previous set of circumstances from the last issue, Terza is dead and dissected, the other heroes are on the verge of death and there are four Earth sized planets on a trajectory with Earth that will result in the death of billions.  It would seem that across the board that the heroes are outnumbered and against impossible odds, but that is equally the setting for a great story to be told.

There are a lot of good parts to this issue and not really any bad ones.  The way in which Leo deals with the threat of Minus-i is inventive, even by the otherworldly application of superhero powers and his might be the most comprehensive death in comic book history.  So too is it pretty notable what is done with Terza’s remains, as she is dead but, as a being of ultimate power, that might not stop her.  What this issue really comes down to though is the destruction of the Earth and the heroes that are scrambling to do something about it.  Some developments occur which might not exactly make things better either as perhaps it is not only Earth that is threatened any more.

This series which has been notable for its ability to surprise and to lead into interesting tangents does the same here.  This issue might in fact be the best so far in the entire series, a series which is notable for many issues which could have been called “the best so far”.  Really the only problem with this issue is that it read so quickly because it was so engaging.  The pacing of the storytelling was excellent, and the characterizations were excellent, and the series continued to surprise, even after having done so many times before.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMSWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

Brett

Top Pick: Past Aways #1 (Dark Horse) – Matt Kindt is one of the best writers out there, constantly delivering with stories that pay off multiple times during their runs. His latest series has a time traveling twist seeing a group get stranded in the distant past…. 2015!

D4VE #2 (IDW Publishing) – Take the movie Falling Down and mix it with The Office or Office Space, and you get this series which sees a former war hero deal with his dull desk job life.

Jem and the Holograms #1 (IDW Publishing) – Jem goes from cartoon to comics in this brand new series just in time for its 30th anniversary. The first issue is beyond fantastic, giving a story that’ll appeal to old fans and new readers. Expect Jem to be a big thing again.

Skullkickers #31 (Image Comics) – Jim Zub’s off the rails fantasy series is always entertaining. Its been a bit since the last issue, but this one starts a whole new arc that’s a good starting point for readers. Even if you’ve never picked up an issue before, you’ll be entertained.

We Can Never Go Home #1 (Black Mask Studios) – The series sees two rather odd high school students team up after they find out about each others powers. There’s clearly more to the story, and I have my suspicions, but the first issue is gripping, and very entertaining.

Edward

Top Pick: Big Thunder Mountain Railroad #1 (Marvel/Disney) – Disney tries to adapt its rides to other media, and it worked really well with Pirates of the Caribbean. It will be interesting to see if this works.

Grimm Fairy Tales Presents the Little Mermaid #2 (Zenescope) – The first issue was a combination of mermaids and science fiction, which is a pretty interesting mix.

Jem and the Holograms #1 (IDW Publishing) –  This relaunch issue looks like a lot of fun, where 1980s big hair meets modern young woman.

Morning Glories #44 (Image Comics) – The mini story arc within the larger story arc within the larger story is getting closer to resolution as Casey gets closer to winning her seat as class president.

Suicide Risk #23 (BOOM! Studios) – Every issue of this series seems as though it finds a new way to surprise, and almost every one of them seems to be better than the last.

Elana

Top Pick: Jem and the Holograms #1 (IDW Publishing) – We had writer Kelly Thompson on the podcast last night  and we couldn’t stop gushing. This is a fun and compelling first issue. The new origin story is emotionally resonant and is an approachable and relevant comic to share with older kids. Also, I noticed that when I posted about it on Facebook I had friends coming out of the woodwork to talk about how much they loved the show back in the day. This is a great comic to share with your friends who grew up with the show and maybe don’t read comics on their own. The art by Sophie Campbell, (who just came out as trans!) is lovely, fun and inclusive. Every comic should aspire to the body diversity reflected in this book. And the colors make it a good inclusion in any Easter baskets you might be making.

All-New X-Factor TP Vol. 3 AXIS (Marvel) – I really enjoyed the series and was sorry to see it cancelled. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go out and buy the trade. I actually think this book will be even better in trade. The stylish art is first rate with an angular style that reminds me of fashion illustration. It’s refreshingly female-gaze-y. Peter David’s characterizations are perfect and charming as ever. He writes Quicksilver better then any other writer EVER. He has the best feel for all of the characters. So if you are a fan of anyone on the team (Gambit, Polaris, Danger, Warlock, Doug Ramsey) you absolutely need this book.

Elektra #11 (Marvel) – I’m one of this book’s biggest proponents. It didn’t seem to find its audience. But if you like scary comics that still feel like a superhero book then you need to read this. The painted art is striking new ground and looks very adult. If you enjoy the character Elektra at all then you need to be reading this before it gets canceled. Kind of feels like the classic Daredevil “Fall from Grace” TP.

Gotham Academy #6 (DC Comics) – Speaking of cliffhangers, I am more intrigued by this series than ever. It is easy to fall in love with the emotionally real yet adorable teen characters and the charming and unique art. It’s still Hogwarts in Gotham and approachable as heck.

The Wicked + The Divine #9 (Image Comics) – This may be my favorite current comic series. The mystery our heroine is trying to solve continues but last issue ended on an intriguing personal cliffhanger for her. Our protagonist, Laura is about to have one of her personal desires fulfilled. But how is it really going to work out for her!? <commence excited bouncing, squealing, and clapping of hands>

ARCADIA #1

Retail Price: $3.99
Author: Alex Paknadel
Artist: Eric Scott Pfeiffer
Cover Artists:
Main Cover: Matt Taylor
BOOM! 10 Years Incentive Cover: Frazer Irving
Incentive Cover: Eric Scott Pfeiffer

What’s to Love: Our long tradition of breaking new talent—like Rafael Albuquerque (The Savage Brothers, American Vampire), Emma Rios (Hexed, Pretty Deadly), and Declan Shalvey (28 Days Later, Moon Knight)—continues with the debut of Alex Paknadel and Eric Scott Pfeiffer, two new creators whose extensive world-building in the sci-fi thriller Arcadia evokes comparisons to epics like Game of Thrones, The Matrix, and Astro City.

What It Is: When 99% of humankind is wiped out by a pandemic, four billion people are “saved” by being digitized at the brink of death and uploaded into Arcadia, a utopian simulation in the cloud. But when Arcadia begins to rapidly deplete the energy resources upon which the handful of survivors in the real world (aka “The Meat”) depends, how long will The Meat be able—and willing—to help? Featuring the first of five connecting covers by Matt Taylor.

OH, KILLSTRIKE #1 (of 4)

Retail Price: $3.99
Author: Max Bemis
Artist: Logan Faerber
Cover Artists:
Main Cover: Logan Faerber
BOOM! 10 Years Incentive Cover: Frazer Iving
Incentive Cover: Kris Anka

What’s to Love: Say Anything frontman Max Bemis writes a love letter to 1990s superhero comics in this tongue-in-cheek homage to the era, featuring the art stylings of Logan Faerber—reminiscent of works by Chip Zdarsky and Jeff Lemire. Much like Polarity, Oh, Killstrike is very personal to Bemis: It’s about a new dad who loves comics from his youth. Part twisted buddy comedy, part profound coming-of-age story, we could not stop smiling when reading Oh, Killstrike.

What It Is: Jared, a new father, fears parenthood. An old comics fan, he turns to them for comfort. But when he unwittingly lets loose his favorite character, Killstrike—a single-minded, vengeance-loving anti-hero—onto the world, Jared must find a way to send him back before he harms all the people he loves the most. But before that happens, Killstrike leads Jared on a quest of self-discovery to make him realize the kid who loved this character is not the man he has become.

Why, the Holo John, of course, a restroom that can make your wildest (or lamest) fantasies happen! This oversized one-shot contains five short stories set in the lavish lavatory, including ones by Paul Allor (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles); Mad Rupert (Adventure Time: Banana Guard); and John Omohundro, the voice of Danny on the Bravest Warriors animated series!

What It Is: What happens when you flush a pet fish down the Holo John? (Hint: It fantasizes it was a shark instead!) Or what if the Holo John gains sentience and “dreams of electric pee”? All that and more are covered in this collection of short stories about the Bravest Warriors’ out-of-this-world outhouse. Who knew they used their emotions-based powers in the loo, too?

What It Is: Sander Jorve just wants to keep his wife and son safe. Living in the brutalized lower class of Lantern City means living in near constant darkness, the enormous walls of the city always looming overhead, while the upper class enjoys the elevated, interconnected towers and airships above. Review: Suicide Risk #22

sr22One word sums up this issue – escalation.  And for those that thought that the heroes would have a quick turnaround after their predicament in the previous, there is no satisfaction here.  Instead this issue proves that the government of the other Earth has everything in their power to take on the heroes and more.  With the looming threat of the planetary collision, Aisa discovers that she has her powers back, but this can also mean only one thing.  Her reconnection to the goddess comes because of Terza’s barrier being broken down.  While the heroes remain trapped on their homeworld, Aisa is faced with the difficult choice of who to help first, the world that she hates but which will be obliterated, or to help her allies.

For those that have been reading this series throughout, it would surprise them to think that this is the same series as the one which was launched in the first issue, but the evolution of this engrossing tale has taken the characters this far.  This particular issue focuses on Aisa, and while other issues have done the same, this one focuses on her after she has learned the truth of what happened to her, her family and her friends.  It is compellingly written how she manages to go from anger to heroics once she realizes what is at stake.

This series continues to be successful and specifically for issues like this one.  It is the kind of issue that the reader consumes impatiently, with each page hopefully coming to some alleviation of the problems faced by all.  In so doing, this shows off the synergy of the creative team, as well as their ability to put together a coherent and well-paced story.  As the middle of a story arc there is still more story to be told here, and the cliffhanger ending which might seem over-the-top in other cases fits perfectly here.  This series is one of the best mixes of the ingenuity that is consistent with the independents with the superhero world that is popular at the big two, and there is really something for every comic reader here.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

BitchPlanet03_CoverWednesdays are new comic book day!

Brett

Top Pick of the Week: Bitch Planet #3 (Image Comics) – Have you read the first two issues? That explains why this is on the top of my pick pile this week. They’re that good! The series mixes political commentary with a prison exploitation film. It’s awesome.

The Kitchen #4 (Vertigo) – If you’re a fan of Goodfellas, The Godfather, or The Sopranos, you’ll dig this series.

Lady Mechanika #4 (Benitez Productions)Finally!  A brand new Lady Mechanika issue: the fourth chapter of The Mystery of the Mechanical Corpse. It’s been a long time coming, but I can’t wait. This series used to be the hot property, but massive release delays have chilled it a bit. I expect new material to get folks excited again.

Letter 44 #14 (Oni Press) – The last issue dropped a bomb, and saw something happen that I expected to happen much further down the road. The series which mixes politics with science fiction is about to kick it up a notch.

Secret Identities #1 (Image Comics) – The supergroup known as The Front Line have just invited new hero Crosswind to join them. But what they don’t know is that Crosswind is a mole, sent to learn all their secrets. And the Front Line have LOTS of secrets.

Edward

Top Pick of the Week: Silk #1 (Marvel) – Spider-Woman got off to a bumpy start with her roll-out during Spider-verse, and it remains to be seen if they have learned their lesson.  No matter what the past year has since the rise of the Spider-women, and this series has the potential to grab a lot of that interest.

Burning Fields #2 (BOOM! Studios) – The first issue set up an unconventional setting for a horror, and left the readers with a bit of a cliffhanger.  It will be interesting to see where it goes from there.

Manifest Destiny #13 (Image Comics) – It is impossible to know what to expect from this series, and as the group pushes farther into the unexplored country, they can only find more otherworldly challenges.

Suicide Risk #22 (BOOM! Studios) – This series has taken the genre of superheroes and given it new life, with an intriguing shared universe full of deceit.  It will be interesting to see how the heroes escape the double cross from the previous issue.

Wonder Woman #39 (DC Comics) – After a decent enough start the new run has run into a few problems, but maybe the surprise return of Donna Toy can help that?

Elana

Top Pick of the Week: Lady Killer #1 2nd Printing (Dark Horse) –  The comic sounds like a creative new title with cool looking art and a period accurate logo. “Avon Lady is really a hired killer” is a great concept. How come women never get to be the dark killer anti-hero, amiright?!

Bitch Planet #3 (Image Comics) –  This is the comic for radicals. And women. And those who love them.

Ms. Marvel #12 (Marvel) – The Valentines Day issue is clearly the most adorable thing in the world. Loki comes to shake up Kamala’s love life?! Based on Bruno’s comment in the preview I will now be referring to new Loki as “hipster Viking”, and applying that term loosely to others. Also they talk about gentrification.

She-Hulk #12 (Marvel) – I’ve been dying to know for a year: WHAT IS IN THE BLUE FILE. And I’m about to find out. I am still upset this book has been cancelled. It’s just what Marvel needs. Grumble.

Storm #8 (Marvel) – Storm is a great comic with a classic feel of the character. Storms actions till now have mostly made sense to me but in the last issue she did something wreckless that through me for a loop. I am super eager to learn why!

Johnny

Top Pick of the Week: Ei8ht # 1 (Dark Horse) – I love time travel stories and this series has a lot of cool concepts behind it, particularly the idea of the Meld. The Meld is a dimension in time, and I am interested to see if it is treated as an inbetween place that touches other points in time.

King: Mandrake the Magician #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – There are no other magic-based comics characters as influential or maybe even as important as Mandrake. There was a period in pop culture history when Mandrake was one of the most well-known and recognizable characters out there, and many modern stage magicians patterned their look and persona on him. Unfortunately most contemporary attempts to re-boot the character have met with lackluster results. However, Dynamite has done a phenomenal job with Flash Gordon, The Phantom and now Mandrake. This series is part of the “King Features” imprint and starts after the events in Kings Watch, but don’t worry, you won’t have to have read that series to enjoy this fresh start. This title is my top pick this week.

Legenderry Green Hornet #1 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Steampunk is hot and Dynamite jumped onto the Steampunk bandwagon last year with Legenderry. The concept was to take classic pulp (and some not so pulp) characters and re-imagine them as a team in a Victorian setting. Now, Dynamite is giving these character’s their own solo turns and this week is The Green Hornet’s turn!

She-Hulk #12 (Marvel) – I love She-Hulk. She is my favorite Marvel character without hesitation. However, I have to admit that I did not collect this particular run, waiting instead for the collection/TPB. For me, Brian Pulido’s art just never connected with me on this series. However, it also seems that the best She-Hulk stories are always the final issues, so this one should be a really good read.

Silk #1 (Marvel) – Although I keep asking why we need another Spider Woman, this character has me intrigued because of her direct connection to Peter Parker and their shared origin. Not only do we get a new character, but we get a strong female character with a (hopefully) a rich back story waiting to be mined.

Nevada

Top Pick of the Week: Cinema Retro #31 (Cinema Retro) – I love retro cinema and Pam Grier as Coffee on the cover just seals the deal.

Fight Like a Girl #3 (Action Lab Entertainment) – I’m intrigued by this and look forward to seeing how Amarosa responds to her new environment and the people she encounters who think they know better than she knows herself. Who are they?

Lone Ranger Vindicated #4 (Dynamite Entertainment) – I’m a fan of Westerns and especially the Lone Ranger so I’ll have to see what happens at the final showdown in Red River.

Nancy Drew Diaries Vol. 4: The Charmed Bracelet and Global Warning (Papercutz) – Nancy’s still quite the go-getter; I just have to drop in to see what she’s up to. This looks like a humdinger.

Twilight Zone #12 (Dynamite Entertainment) – I haven’t paid a visit to the Twilight Zone in a while, plus the retro look of this is quite appealing!

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Star_Wars_1_CoverWednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

We’re bringing back something we haven’t done for a while, what the team thinks. Our contributors are choosing up to five books each week, highlighting a top pick, and why they’re choosing the books.

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday. I think it’s safe to say we’re excited for a story that takes place in a galaxy far, far away.

Brett

Top Pick – Star Wars #1 (Marvel) – I’m a Star Wars fan, and have loved reading Dark Horse’s various series. I also have some fond memories of reading Marvel’s take back in the 80s (and still have a few issues laying around in my long boxes). What Marvel does with the license should be interesting, especially in comparing to how Dark Horse handled it all.

Avengers #40 (Marvel) – What Jonathan Hickman has been doing with the various Avengers titles has been exciting and an interesting direction for them. We’re ahead in the Marvel timeline seeing how things have progressed as “Time Runs Out.” All of this is leading to Secret Wars, so… there’s that? If anything, the story has been exciting and entertaining with some kick-ass art.

Copperhead #5 (Image) – I love this series, one of my favorites to debut in 2014. The first arc wraps up in a nice tidy bow and it sets up some interesting plot threads for the future. This is a great sci-fi western and if you’re into that sort of thing, absolutely pick up the trade paperback when it’s out next month.

Michael Jordan: Bull on Parade (Fantagraphics) – Wilfred Santiago’s graphic novel about the sports legend. It touches on his successes and struggles and has an interesting take on how an individual can turn into a product.

Stumptown Vol. 3 #5 (Oni Press) – The conclusion to “The Cast of the King of Clubs” has Dex deciding if she’ll seek justice or revenge. Writer Greg Rucka has been on fire and that’s helped by Justin Greenwood’s art.

Edward

Top Pick – Batgirl #38 (DC Comics) – Ever since the new creative team has taken over there has been a positive change in direction for this series which was already decent enough.  The series might be a bit lighter in pure superheroics, but it is heavier on themes and character development.

Damsels in Excess #4 (Aspen Comics) – Aspen’s unconventional fairy tale series takes another turn here as the heroines get closer to their final confrontation.  This is an interesting take on fairy tales, different from the other titles in a medium which is saturated with them at the moment.

Deep State #3 (BOOM! Studios) – This series which was easy to pick up, also proves to be hard to put down.  Even those that don’t like X-Files conspiracies will find some pure comic fun here.

Grimm Fairy Tales Presents Wonderland #31 (Zenescope) – When Calie Liddle won against the powers of Wonderland and took on the role of queen, fans of this series might have wondered if there were still stories to be told.  New series writer Erica Heflin proved in the first story arc that she is fit to the task, and the mother vs. daughter clash of the second story arc looks pretty fun.

Suicide Risk #21 (BOOM! Studios) – This series has not stopped since the first issue from presenting its own world full of superheroes but with a weird twist.  Now with his wife and alternate universe wife both living under the same roof, how will Requiem react when the fate of the world is in the balance?

Elana

Top Pick – Rat Queens Special: Braga #1 (Shadowline/Image) – If you like female centered stories and ever played D&D this deserves a read. And female characters who aren’t attractive humanoids don’t often get to tell their stories.

Lazarus #14 (Image) – everyone here is the best they are at what they do (including Forever herself). I gotta get caught up!

Silver Surfer #8 (Marvel) – It’s starting to get touching! A story about vulnerability. And Allred’s art is glorious as ever.

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl #1 (Marvel) – This came out last week, but it’s fun. pure fun. I’ve been a fan of Henderson’s art for a few years now and she has a uniquely feminist eye for the world. Her cartoon-y style should’t be underestimated because her pacing and breakdowns are strong. North was great on Adventure Time so bring on the zaniness.

George

Top Pick – Jupiter’s Legacy #5 (Image) – Although the spacing between issues is greater than we would like, this book has one of the best stories from Mark Millar. The amazing art by Frank Quitely make it a must for anyone’s Pull List.

Copperhead #5 (Image) – The conclusion to the first arc of this outstanding and imaginative series by Jay Faeber and Scott Godlewski.  It’s a crime procedural on a distant planet that feels like a mix between The Fuse and Saga; what else could you ask for?

Lazarus #14 (Image) – Greg Rucka has created a vast and amazing world for Forever, the protector of the Carlyle Family to roam free. With each new arc we learn more and more of this futuristic world consisting of ruling families and the Lazarus that protect each one.

Star Wars #1 (Marvel) – You can never have too much Star Wars material to soak up. This one, by Jason Aaron and artwork by John Cassaday, takes place between IV: A New Hope and V: The Empire Strikes Back. Bridging the story between the two movies should be a lot of fun for any Star Wars fan.

The Walking Dead #136 (Skybound/Image Comics) – One of the best stories out there, Robert Kirkman has reinvented The Walking Dead Universe with brand new dangers and horrors lurking around every corner. After all these years I still love when a new issue comes out and the new arc is going to be just as great as any in the past.

Matt

Top Pick – Teen Dog #5 (BOOM! Box/BOOM! Studios)- Teen Dog has faithfully served up all kinds of superb cool in the first four issues, so this latest issue should be more of that. This round, Teen Dog is gonna have to confront his alter ego, who is probably totally not cool at all. Scoff.

Batgirl #38 (DC Comics) – The DC book with the most diversity in characters made headlines last month in a way that really doesn’t behoove what the creative team is going for with this series, but I’m sure it can make a comeback. My roommate thought I was reading a Marvel book when he looked over my shoulder to see the first issue of this new run, and that’s a good thing when it comes to the kind of demographics a book like this is appealing to.

Daredevil #12 (Marvel) – Waid and Samnee are doing something more mainstream superhero books need to be doing, which is telling short, small-scale stories. The solicit for this issue promises a conclusion to the great story started last issue, along with some teases for potential seeds leading to bigger stories; those are good too!

S.H.I.E.L.D. #2 (Marvel) – Giving Mark Waid the reins on a Marvel Universe-spanning crossover book that loosely ties into the Agents of Shield television show is a lovely idea. This issue’s pairing of Waid with Humberto Ramos to do a Ms. Marvel-centric story is all-kinds of awesome, too.

Silver Surfer #8 (Marvel) – This book is always a treat, with Slott’s fun sense of adventure and Allred’s incredible, whimsical art. Promised in this issue is a planet filled with billions of varied species, so the sky’s the limit!

Sean

Top Pick – Daredevil #12 (Marvel) – Waid and Samnee’s Daredevil is one of the best comics on the market, even before it was unnecessarily rebooted, and continues to inspire awe with beautiful art that I wish I could plaster my walls with, and an emotionally complex script that is atypical of most mainstream productions. Daredevil’s new conflict with the Stunt-Master continues, Matt lies in his autobiography, and more!

Animal Man Vol. 7: Red Plague TP (DC Comics) – Animal Man of the 1980s and 1990s by Vertigo was fantastic, featuring the much acclaimed run by Grant Morrison (among many others). A new TP collects issues #64-79, Annual 1.

Justice League United #8 (DC Comics) – I’ve kept away from most JL books since the Trinity event, mostly because JL itself is a bit overblown while JLD, despite an awesome cast has suffered from sub-par storytelling. Other JL incarnations in the New 52 aren’t even worth mentioning. JLU, however, is an exciting romp through space, bringing in some of my favorite science fiction heroes with a new, truly compelling First Nations superheroine, Miiyahbin. In this issue, JLU and the Legion of Super-Heroes go toe-to-toe.

The New 52: Future’s End #37 (DC Comics) – Despite my general disgust with the ploy that, if you want to keep up with the DC Universe, you have to buy weeklies (well, you really don’t…), I have actually rather enjoyed Future’s End, or, rather, some of its subplots. I have a feeling that the conclusion of the series will be a great let down, especially since the future shown here will probably not be carried out in other books. Like, I would buy up an Amethyst and Frankenstein team-up comics. Alas…

Star Trek #40 (IDW Publishing) – A well-written exploration of the AU created by Abrams’ films, this issue concludes the “Q Gambit” in which Q has transported Kirk and crew to the future, challenging him to confront the reality that a “no win” scenario really is unwinnable. Plus, Q himself might cease to exist!

Star Wars #1 (Marvel) – The Star Wars franchise returns to Marvel. I can’t say that I’m particularly thrilled about it, but since it can’t be changed I might as well see what Marvel’s about. Objectively, this issue ushers in an unprecedented era in the history of Star Wars, when for the first time the difference between the Expanded Universe and the films are erased and a single continuity is established.

Comixstravaganza Live’s “Big Daddy Cool” Johnny Dellarocca’s

Top Pick – Star Wars #1 (Marvel) – Everyone is head over heels about this release, and the most obvious reason to be is being overlooked by many: for the first time EVER, the comic stories will be canon! Remember earlier this year when Kathleen Kennedy at Lucasfilm said that the EU and all previous comics would be labeled as “Legacy” and everything moving forward would be canon? Well, here ya go! You’re welcome.

Star Wars Legends Marvel Years Omnibus HC (Marvel) – Speaking of “Legends”, this week also see the release of the Omnibus HC, Star Wars: The Marvel Years. This collects all the Marvel comics series starting with the 1977 movie adaptation (which saved the comics industry by the way) and runs through the Empire Strikes Back adaptation. That is one hefty tome, but won’t it look awesome on my bookshelf?

Men of Mystery #95 (AC Comics) – Fans of Dynamite’s Project: Superpowers can read the original tales of seventeen Golden Age heroes! It’s classic pulp superhero adventures at their best! Artists include Joe Kubert, Reed Crandall, and Bob Powell. The market on this one is smallish, so this might be a tough one to find!

Sherlock Holmes vs. Harry Houdini #3 (Dynamite Entertainment) – as a professional magician I am naturally interested in Harry Houdini. However, I have a confession to make. I have an entire library of Houdini books and biographies, and went to far to name my office and studio complex “The Houdini Room!” This series has been interesting because of the real life animosity between Houdini and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. They started as friends but became rivals over the issue of spiritualism. Some have even implicated Doyle in Houdini’s murder (look it up). The time line here is a little skewed, probably to appeal to the Steampunk fandom, but it is a fun read nonetheless.

Wild’s End #5 (BOOM! Studios) – I really can’t believe more people aren’t buzzing about this title. War of the Worlds set in depression era 1930s starring anamorphic animals as the heroes! How could you not love this? Further, this book is the very definition of Dieselpunk! That’s right, I said DIESELpunk. It is the retro futuristic sci-fi and fantasy of the deco/jazz age! If you aren’t familir with Dieselpunk you can learn more by tuning into my Diesel Powered Podcast on iTunes!
