Review: Strange Skies Over East Berlin #1

Strange Skies Over East Berlin #1

The Cold War feels like a fading memory. Strange Skies Over East Berlin #1 is that jolt to remind you of what was. Writer Jeff Loveness makes it a point to take us back to when the world was literally split by a wall.

The story opens with a reminder that there was a time when Berlin was split. That individuals fought for freedom and climbed the wall risking safety to seek it. It’s a theme that echoes today’s immigration debate. Loveness makes sure to focus on the fear of being caught and the danger of it all. Then the record skips and what was a Cold War escape thriller turns into something else. It’s a mystery of what happened as a light streaked across the sky.

Strange Skies Over East Berlin #1 is a mix of Cold War paranoia and sci-fi mystery. By issues end we’re teased with what might be but there’s an emphasis on the fundamentals of that Cold War paranoia.

The art by Lisandro Estherren is fantastic. With color by Patricio Delpeche it is a perfect fit for the mashed together genres. There’s a noir sense for most of the comic then a shift as the sci-fi mystery is unveiled. A streak of light in the sky signifies the change in story and the art style shifts too subtly. The lettering of Steve Wands adds to the atmosphere of the comic with the choice of fonts for different aspects. The caption boxes have a typewriter aspect to them. It’s “of the time.”

If you want a sci-fi mystery set during the Cold War, Strange Skies Over East Berlin #1 delivers and then some. It’s a fantastic start to the series that takes us back to a different time and feels like it will have layers to examine much like the science fiction of the time. It’s a solid start to an intriguing series.

BOOM! Releases a First Look at Strange Skies Over East Berlin #1

BOOM! Studios has revealed a first look at Strange Skies Over East Berlin #1, the premiere issue of an all-new original series from Jeff Loveness and artist Lisandro Estherren, a chilling and intense thriller about an American spy who encounters a terrifying inhuman threat at the heart of the Cold War.

It’s 1973, and Herring, a disillusioned American spy, has spent the entire Cold War infiltrating the inner circles of East German intelligence for a cause he barely believes in anymore. He’s seen everything and done anything his government asked, but his latest mission pits the brilliant embittered operative against an old Stasi foe and a strange force so powerful it threatens the very existence of humanity.

Strange Skies Over East Berlin #1 features main cover art by illustrator Evan Cagle, as well as a variant cover by artist Tonči Zonjić. The comic comes to shelves October 2, 2019.
