Vertigo Announces Imaginary Fiends by Tim Seeley and Stephen Molnar

Vertigo joins together veteran horror writer Tim Seeley and artist Stephen Molnar to create a spine-tingling new series, Imaginary Fiends. The six-issue miniseries combines elements of both horror and sci-fi for a tale that will leave readers in shock and fear.

Years ago, a young girl named Brinke Calle was found covered in blood near the woods in the small rural town of Cannon Falls, MN, when her best friend Melba attempted to murder her. When investigators tried to understand why, Melba revealed that a spider girl named Polly Peachpit told her to. Years later, Melba is turning 18 and will begin her real sentence in federal prison. That is, until a new unit in the FBI recruits her, with an explanation for what happened so many years ago.

Another world exists beyond ours. One that is terrifying, where hungry spectral aliens stalk the minds of the weak and impressionable. And these parasites have leeched onto humanity for too long. But in order to understand them, Melba must first unleash her own monster.

This frightening new thriller will arrive November 15. Read at your own risk.

Starting today, the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund (CBLDF), IDW Publishing and CBS Consumer Products are giving Star Trek fans a chance to “Be a Redshirt” on the cover of an upcoming STAR TREK comic.

Originating in the classic Star Trek episodes and expanding to pop culture at large, a “redshirt” is a character that dies soon after being introduced. With the “Be a Reshirt” contest, the winning fan will have the honor of “dying” while heroically saving their retailer. The grand prizewinner will be featured as a “redshirt” on an upcoming cover of IDW’s new STAR TREK ongoing series, placing themselves between their local retailer and a phaser blast. The “Be a Redshirt” contest is open to any comics reader who thinks their local retailer is the best in the business.

“As redshirts are famous for always catching the phaser in Star Trek episodes, and as comic fans can be so loyal in defending their local retailer, it’s the perfect contest,” said Dirk Wood, IDW’s Director of Retailer Marketing, “And partnering with the CBLDF is perfect, because no one knows more about defending retailers than they do.”

To enter the “Be A Redshirt” contest, fans must e-mail their explanation in 300 words or less about why their retailer is the best to IDW at contests@IDWPublishing.com with the subject: Save My Retailer. The winning fan and their retailer will be depicted on a limited-edition variant cover of STAR TREK. This special cover will be limited to only 300 copies: 100 each to the winning fan and their retailer, plus 100 to CBLDF to help them continue the important and challenging work of defending retailers everywhere. The winning fan will also receive the original art, by the Sharp Brothers.

IDW Publishing Reviews – Star Trek #1 and Ghostbusters #1

IDW PublishingIt felt right lumping these two comics together to review.  IDW Publishing has debuted this week (Ghostbusters) and last (Star Trek), two heavy weights when it comes to established properties.  There’s lots of good and bad when it comes creating comics off of established universes, you tend to be restrained by the stories you can tell and how you can portray character (bad), but you also get an established audience (good).  But, when all is said and done, it’s the story that matters.  It doesn’t matter I can pick up the continuing stories of some of my favorite characters if it’s horrible.  So how do these stack up?  Find out below.

Star Trek #1

Writer – Mike Johnson, Artist – Stephen Molnar, Colorist – John Rauch, Letterer – Neil Uyetake

Star Trek #1There’s been some previous comic book series (I’ve never read them), but this is the first (I believe) to be an ongoing one taking place in the new universe set by J.J. Abrams big screen reboot.  The characters are a bit younger and green and the Enterprise a new vessel that’s not exactly the unbeatable juggernaut we’ve seen in previous films.

The plot is interesting having the crew head to the edge of the galaxy where they experience a strange event and find a mysterious distress beacon.  The mystery is cool and a lot of the Star Trek winks are there (guess the crew member to die! hint, he wears red). The art is good and there’s so solid translation from the already existing designs to the comic book page.  My one gripe is the faces are a bit flat and don’t show enough emotion.

The comic feels like a continuation of the movie and a bridge for it’s eventual sequel, which is great.  I might not have been a big fan in the past and reader of any of the Trek comic books before, but there’s more than enough there to get me to come back for a second issue.  If you’re a die-hard fan or a new one from the movies, this is a definite buy.

Story: 7.5 Art: 7.25 Overall: 7.5 Recommendation: Buy

Ghostbusters #1

Writer – Erik Burnham, Art – Dan Schoening, Color – Luis Antonio Delgado, Letterer – Shawn Lee

Ghostbusters #1Who you gonna call?  It’s been too long since we had a Ghostbusters movie and hopefully we’ll get one soon.  What better way to get that ball rolling and get people pumped, than kick of a new comic book series.  But, the question is, what tone will it take?  You can go the horror route or you can take a comedic route, or you can do a blend.  The tone of the comic book series is more in line with the old animated cartoon series (can’t say I ever watched it).  There’s a lot of humor here and some “horror” moments you might find in the movie, ie more on the humorous side.

The comic is good and feels like a nice continuation of the movies.  It references both a lot, which help solidify what we might expect and it looks like the new bad guy will directly reference the first movie.

The art was my issue with the series.  It’s a bit too cartoony, it matches the old cartoon (duh).  There’s a short story after featuring a certain bureaucrat that has a different style that I think would actually be better for the main series.  It’s kind of hard to get scared by some nasty ghost when they’re a bit funny to look at.  Maybe I’ll be wrong in the long run, but that’s my concern.

Otherwise, I loved the first issue.  The story was fun and it’s perfect for adult fans and safe to give your younger kids (and then introduce them to the genius of the first movie).

Story: 7.75 Art: 7 Overall: 7.5 Recommendation: Buy
