Skybound, Image Comics, and Hasbro have announced that they will publish Energon Universe Special 2024 #1, featuring the same story content as the Free Comic Book Day 2024 special with all-new can’t miss covers for collectors. This issue will be available from Skybound, Image and Hasbro the week following FCBD on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.   

Skybound also debuted a first look at all-new pages from the FCBD special, which promises shocking turns from the juggernaut Energon Universe series and can’t miss first appearances from the worlds of Void Rivals, Transformers, and G.I. Joe. This comic serves as a perfect jumping on point for new readers and a can’t miss for long time fans.  

Discover three all new stories from the Energon Universe, with stunning revelations for the worlds of Transformers, G.I. Joe, nd Void Rivals from the biggest names in comics. Energon Universe talent Robert Kirkman, Daniel Warren Johnson, and Joshua Williamson pen the stories, and Lorenzo De Felici, Ryan Ottley, and Jason Howard will provide art.  

In addition to the main cover by Daniel Warren Johnson and Mike Spicer, Energon Universe Special 2024 #1 will feature a slate of variant covers by friends of Skybound and top comics talent Lorenzo De Felici, Tom Reilly, Stephen Green, and Khary Randolph.

Impact Winter Gets Graphic Novel Collection Release This Fall

Skybound, Image Comics, Anonymous Content, and Audible, have announced a graphic novel based on the #1 Audible Original of 2022, Impact Winter. The post-apocalyptic prequel from Audible series creator/writer Travis Beacham will collect Impact Winter #1, Impact Winter: Rook #1, and the upcoming Impact Winter: Evenfall #1 and will be available everywhere books are sold October 15, 2024.  

Darcy, a young and headstrong fighter looking to prove herself. Rook, a wandering centurion needing a second chance. Penelope, a newly awoken vampire seeking revenge. Their stories unfold in the dark corners of legend, where vampires are real and waiting for the opportunity to step from the shadows.  

Collected for the first time ever, these stories will entice new readers and longtime fans of the Audible Original to explore the world of Impact Winter with Travis Beacham and artists Stephen Green, Andrea Milana, and Sumeyye Kesgin. 

These epic tales of darkness and light feature many of the characters made beloved in the heart-stopping audio drama, as well as the first appearances of important characters that have not been introduced in the audio series.

Get a look at Impact Winter #1 from Skybound coming this July

Skybound and Anonymous Content have unveiled a new look at Impact Winter #1, the new post-apocalyptic one-shot that serves as a prequel to the Audible Original series of the same name. Impact Winter #1 debuts in comic shops July 13.  

The superstar creative team behind the new comic includes Audible series creator Travis Beacham, artist Stephen Green, colorist Matt Hollingsworth, and letterer AndWorld Design. Impact Winter #1 will feature many of the characters made beloved in the heart-stopping audio drama, as well as the first appearance of an important character that has not yet been introduced in the audio series.  

The 40-page extra-length issue takes place several years prior to the events in the audio series—one year since a comet hit Earth, inflicting an “impact winter” and blotting out the sun. Now, the world is a dark, cold landscape ruled by vampires. 

In the British countryside, a band of survivors has formed a resistance in the fallout shelter of a medieval castle. Among them is Darcy, a young, headstrong fighter waiting for her chance to prove she can be on the front lines. But when that opportunity comes, Darcy will come face to face with the true horrors of this new world.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1957: Forgotten Lives

Hellboy and Professor Trevor Bruttenholm team up for some quality father-son time at a New York potter’s field where they try to unravel the mystery of a spectral being haunting the packed graveyard. Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1957: Forgotten Lives is a haunting tale that feels like it breaks the Hellboy mold a bit taking the story in a somber and touching direction.

Written by Mike Mignola and Chris Roberson, Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1957: Forgotten Lives is a story about family and being remembered once you are no long on this planet. There’s something rather sad and touching at the same time. As the issue plays out, it’s sure to get readers to reflect on those they miss and what they can do to keep their memories alive. An interesting timing, there’s two individuals who passed away years ago that were close to me around this time so the release of this comic is rather fitting for me. I felt my mind wandering a bit thinking about each of them, and in the end the sadness of the story delivered a little smile to my face.

While the story’s connect the dots feels a little too convenient, that really isn’t the point. The point is for Hellboy and Professor Trevor Bruttenholm to have some time together and think about those they’ve lost and reflect on the quality time they don’t spend together. It’s a touching story in many ways.

The art by Stephen Green with color by Dave Stewart and lettering by Clem Robins nails the story with a style that reflects the melancholy tale. There’s a dour aspect at times to the story that the visuals nail. Professor Trevor Bruttenholm staring out the window reflecting on the years might be one of the saddest panels in comics this year but it’s also a panel we can all relate to. Bruttenholm looking defeated might be a second. But, despite the rather sad nature of the story, the art never feels like it drags the story down into depressing territory, which it easily could. There’s a gloomy cloud that follows the tale that the visuals perfectly capture.

Hellboy and the B.P.R.D. 1957: Forgotten Lives is a fantastic one-shot anyone can pick up and enjoy. It’s a story we can all relate to. Remembering our friends or relatives or those that influenced and entertained us is something we all experience. Despite that sadness the story at the end feels like a celebration in a way. It doesn’t fall down the usual path of Hellboy punching things, instead, it delivers a much story that is much more a challenge for us to reflect and think about those we love.

Sea of Stars’ First Volume Gets Collected in January

The first story arc of the epic, critically acclaimed science-fiction adventure Sea of Stars—by writing duo Jason Aaron and Dennis Hallum, artist Stephen Green, with colors by Rico Renzi, and with letters and design by Jared Fletcher—will be collected into trade paperback and available from Image Comics this January. Sea of Stars, Vol. 1: Lost in the Wild Heavens will collect issues #1-5 of the intense, galaxy-spanning comic book series that features all the scope and heart of The Neverending Story crossed with imaginative weirdness of a Miyazaki animation.
