‘OVERKILL’S The Walking Dead’ PC Closed Beta Begins Oct. 9

Starbreeze, Skybound Entertainment and 505 Games have announced the PC-exclusive closed beta of OVERKILL’S The Walking Dead will begin on Oct. 9, 2018. The news was revealed in a developer livestream hosted by Global Brand Director Almir Listo and Executive Producer Saul Gascon, showcasing new footage* of the Underpass level recently previewed at gamescom.

Closed beta access is guaranteed with PC pre-orders of OVERKILL’s The Walking Dead, available now via Steam and the game website. Players who purchase the game’s standard edition will receive a single closed beta invite, while deluxe edition pre-orders will receive four closed beta keys to share with friends. Additional closed beta details will be shared with the community soon.

Inspired by Robert Kirkman’s original graphic novels, OVERKILL’s The Walking Dead is a four-player co-op multiplayer shooter where players must band together on a variety of missions and raids to find survivors, secure supplies and stay alive. Use stealth to evade enemies tactically, or dismember walkers limb from limb with brute force and firepower. Each of the game’s four playable characters has their own special abilities, skill trees, squad roles, play styles and background stories.

OVERKILL’S The Walking Dead will launch globally on Windows PC on Nov. 6, 2018. It will arrive on the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system and Xbox One on Feb. 6, 2019, in the Americas and Feb. 8, 2019, in Europe and other territories. Console pre-orders are available now digitally and at most major retailers.

The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season Comes to Nintendo Switch on August 28

Leading publisher and developer of digital entertainment Telltale Games, alongside Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment, have announced that The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season will launch on Nintendo Switch on August 28, bringing the multiple ‘Game of the Year’ award-winning first season to Nintendo’s latest console.

The Complete First Season includes all five original episodes, as well as add-on anthology 400 Days. Both have been ported from last year’s The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series Collection, which offered substantial visual and performance enhancements over previous editions. Those upgrades will now carry over into The Complete First Season on Switch.

The full game, including all five episodes and 400 Days, will be available for download starting August 28 for $24.99 USD in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Australia, and most of Europe. Though audio will only be available in English, all content has been subtitled in English, French, German, Spanish, and Italian.

Telltale also announced that The Walking Dead: Season Two and The Walking Dead: A New Frontier will both come to Switch later this year. More information will be available in the coming months. Additionally, episode one of The Walking Dead: The Final Season launched earlier this month on Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. New episodes of The Final Season will continue to launch on all four platforms throughout the remainder of 2018.

The Walking Dead is set in the world of Robert Kirkman’s award-winning comic book series and offers an emotionally-charged experience in which players’ choices determine the course of the story across the entire series. Season One of Telltale’s The Walking Dead introduced young survivor Clementine and her protector Lee as they struggled against the dire circumstances of an undead apocalypse.

Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

The Amazing Spider-Man #4 (Marvel) – So far so good in this Nick Spencer helmed comic which is already showing a different voice from the Spider-Man of the past few years. We’ve been surprised so far and this is one that has exceeded our expectations.

Aphrodite V #2 (Image Comics/Top Cow Productions) – The first issue was an interesting an entertaining take on the character. With a new setting and new characters, and a little mix of real world issues, this is one we’ve got our eye on.

Batman: King of Fear #1 (DC Comics) – There’s a lot of Batman out there but the return of artist Kelley Jones has us excited for this six-issue miniseries.

Black Panther #3 (Marvel) – It shouldn’t work but it totally does. Give us this revolution in space take on the classic Black Panther.

Cold Spots #1 (Image Comics) – A new horror series from Cullen Bunn with art by Mark Torres. That’s all you need to know.

Die!Die!Die! #2 (Image Comics/Skybound Entertainment) – The first issue was pure over the top violence and insanity. We’re in to see if the second can deliver just as much.

Double Jumpers: Full Circle Jerks #1 (Action Lab: Danger Zone) – The first volume was some 8-bit geeky fun and we’re hopeful the second can deliver on that again.

Justice League Dark #2 (DC Comics) – The team is an interesting one and this series in an issue has stood out from the rest of the Justice League comics. A focus on horror/magic is part of that but it’s the team and their personalities that’s selling this one.

Life of Captain Marvel #2 (Marvel) – Is it tweaking what we know about the character? Yes. Do we care? No, especially when the first issue was so good.

Planet of the Apes: Visionaries (BOOM! Studios) – It’s Rod Serling’s unused take on the classic property and it’ll get you to rethink the original.

The Punisher #1 (Marvel) – This feels like a getting back to basics for the character and we’re excited for that.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #23 (Marvel) – This continues to be Indiana Jones in space with a character whose attitude rivals Han Solo. Always fun and always entertaining.

Teen Titans #21 (DC Comics) – It’s a new team with a new attitude and the first issue was fantastic with a hell of a twist ending and we want to see where that goes.

West Coast Avengers #1 (Marvel) – This line up of characters has us sold.

Wonder Woman #53 (DC Comics) – Steve Orlando taking on Wonder Woman? Yes please!

Paul

Top Pick: Fantastic Four #1 (Marvel) – FINALLY! Fantastic Four was the first comic book I ever read and it ignited my passion for comic books. I collected this title for years and was crushed when it was cancelled. I am beyond excited that Marvel’s first family is coming back and I can’t wait to read their new adventures.

Brett

Top Pick: The Sandman Universe #1 (Vertigo/DC Comics) – This is it, the return of the classic comic universe! I can’t say I ever read the originals, but I’m fascinated to see what this new entry is like and the new series spinning out of this universe.

Black Badge #1 (BOOM! Studios) – Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins alone are draws for this new series.

Farmhand #2 (Image Comics) – The first issue was weird in all the right ways where a farm now grows human parts. Funny in so many ways, this is one that’s just strange enough to keep us intrigued.

Hot Lunch Special #1 (AfterShock Comics) – I couldn’t tell you a single thing about what this series is about. I just know writer Eliot Rahal is writing it and since he consistently entertains me, I’m excited to check it out.

Long Live Pro Wrestling #0 (Scout Comics) – Wrestling in comics is becoming a big thing again and this one sounds unique as it follows a former wrestler turned talk show host which sounds like it could stand out.

Mech Cadet Yu #11 (BOOM! Studios) – I love this seres of kids piloting giant mechs fighting off aliens. This isn’t the issue to start but I will constantly recommend this series.

Oblivion Song by Kirman and De Felici #6 (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) – This sci-fi series stands out not for the concept/aliens, but the focus on the impact of a catastrophic event. There’s an exploration of PTSD and trauma that’s subtle (and some times not so much) but something we just don’t see in comics much today.

Outpost Zero #2 (Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics) – The first issue was the tense build up of a disaster film. A little mix of a lot of concepts, the center of it all is key, grown up kids who are experiencing it all in their own way. An interesting enough first issue I’m excited to check out the second.

Transformers: Lost Light #22/Transformers: Optimus Prime #22/Transformers: Unicron #3 (IDW Publishing) – The three series come together to deal with the threat that us Unicron. While some are a bit behind the main story, they’re all important in their own way and the bigger picture that’s happening is amazing. This is years of storyline finally converging to one big event and who knows what will happen when it’s all over.

Joe

Top Pick: Fantastic Four #1 (Marvel) – The first family of comics is back! It’s long overdue, I mean even DC formed The Terrifics in their absence with a different but in the same mold as our science loving explorers. So pumped to see what Slott and company has in store.

The Sandman Universe #1 (Vertigo/DC Comics) – Another classic and beloved series returns this week. I have high hopes for this book and the four ongoing series it will kick off. It’s Gaiman’s world, we just play in it!

Plastic Man #3 (DC Comics) – While I wish this was an ongoing, I am still looking forward to every issue. It’s such ridiculous fun and mystery.

Superman #2 (DC Comics) – Let’s see what Bendis and company has in store as these issues pile up. I enjoyed both starts to this and Action, and am hopeful the momentum continues. Great start so far.

The Amazing Spider-Man #3 (Marvel) – Spencer and Ottley have done a great job with the first two issues, and I am loving the story with The Lizard, and the school. I can’t wait as the rogues gallery grows, because to me, much like Batman, that’s when Spidey is at its best.

Review: Outpost Zero #1

Welcome to Outpost Zero, the smallest town in the universe. The people there work the land, go to the fights every Friday night, and tuck their children into bed-but the Outpost is no place for dreams or aspirations. To survive is ambitious enough. As Alea and her friends graduate to adulthood on a frozen world never meant to support human life, something stirs. Something sees…

Outpost Zero #1 is a prime example of how to world build in such a very short amount of time. Written by Sean Kelley McKeever, the series focuses on a distant town within a bubble on a frozen alien world. We learn of their arrival, tragedy, how it all works, and the characters within quickly and in such a way that’s entertaining and makes you want to come back for more.

What’s interesting is how the threat that’s coming builds. The story, you expect to go one way, but by the end it veers in another direction that’s unexpected. Yes, the comic has a Snowpiercer like vibe about it, but it has more than enough uniqueness that makes it stand out from that modern classic of a series.

But, what McKeever does that’s really impressive is gives us a bunch of characters that feel like they may be as home in Riverdale as they are on an alien world in a dome city. There’s nothing particularly sci-fi about the series in that it feels really normal in a way. An issue in and it all feels natural and that’s a good thing as it creates the focus on the characters and their interactions as opposed to some out there sci-fi plot… but that may be coming.

The art by Alexandre Tefenkgi with color by Jean-Francois Beaulieu is really good with each character being very unique with lots of personality just in their look. But, there’s also subtle body language that tells the reader about what’s going on as much as the dialogue itself. It’s a great example of show, don’t tell. That applies to Outpost Zero itself where we get a sense of what’s happened through all of the detail added throughout, a crack here and there tells us more than some extraneous dialogue.

This might be a story about an alien world where a dome may fail and everyone dies from freezing to death, but it also stars characters who are focused on what’s next in their lives and what their role in society will be… and relationships with each other. As I said, put this in any-town America and the story could work, even the freezing weather aspect. There’s a grounded aspect to it all that makes it stand out as a series I can’t wait to read more of.

Review: Die!Die!Die!

Die!Die!Die! bills itself as a blood-soaked, no holds barred, action-packed, irreverent story. The series focuses on a world where evil people do evil stuff all the time. A secret cabal within the United States government influences world matters through targeted assassination. The world around us is manipulated right under our noses, mostly for the better… but sometimes for individual gain, and sometimes for the fun of it.

Written by Robert Kirkman and Scott M. Gimple, Die!Die!Die! feels like the creative team channeling Garth Ennis with over the top torture, blood, copious amounts of drugs, and some nudity. The story too feels very Ennis with a secret cabal sending out killers to… well kill.

The story itself is over the top and feels like a departure in a way from what I’d expect in the more character focused Kirkman series like The Walking Dead and Oblivion. That’s not the focus here, it’s clearly the action, and that’s not a bad thing.

The bloody action is presented by Chris Burnham with colors from Nathan Fairbairn and lettering from Rus Wooton. And boy is that bloody action presented. Things are over the top in an almost comedic fashion that turns it from gross to something almost mocking the genre in a way. The characters are interesting and action decent but again, like the writing, the art is a reminder of Ennis’ partnership with Steve Dillon, in particular their work on Preacher.

There’s a clear reader who will absolutely enjoy this debut issue, fans of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. There’s an over the top aspect of it all that desensitizes the violence in a way that makes it comedic. The comic was a surprise for fans and retailers and what’s inside too is surprising as it’s a departure from Kirkman’s other current series. If you like a little bit of ultraviolence to the point of borderline spoof, this is one to check out.
