Graphic Policy’s Top Comic Picks this Week!

Bone Parish #5

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

It’s a short week of releases with the holiday and you can get every single issue for under $50! So, instead of picking which you should get, we’re doing something a little bit different with going over what they are and why you should check out each release!

Bone Parish #5 (BOOM! Studios) – A mix of horror and crime, there’s a drug on the street made up from corpses. The series has been excellent so far and if you missed out on the first four issues, there’s a comic shop exclusive trade out today as well.

Die! Die! Die! #6 (Image Comics/Skybound Entertainment) – Over the top ultra-violence in comic form. We haven’t seen this issue yet because (redacted).

Fantastic Four #5 (Marvel) – It’s a fantastic wedding! No seriously, the wedding actually happens! It’s an oversized issue but just nails the perfect FF vibe.

Go-Bots #2 (IDW Publishing) – Creator Tom Scioli rocks it in everything he does and he’s just bringing us back to our childhoods by taking on this “also ran” of transforming robot toys.

Hellboy and the BPRD 1956 #2 (Dark Horse) – There’s a movie out in 2019 and you might as well get into the Hellboy action now! These “year” series have been exploring the earlier adventuers of Hellboy and have been a lot of fun so far. There’s so little out this week, you should also grab the first issue too.

Man-Eaters #4 (Image Comics) – It’s standalone story that’s an entry point for those new to the series.

Mars Attacks #3 (Dynamite Entertainment) – Ack. Ack. Ack. Ack. Ack. Ack. Ack. Ack. Ack.

Marvel Action: Avengers #1 (IDW Publishing/Marvel) – IDW is taking on the classic Marvel poperty with this new series aimed at younger readers.

Superior Spider-Man #1 (Marvel) – Picking up from Spider-Geddon, Doc Ock is again the Superior Spider-Man, attitude and all.

Uncanny X-Men #7 (Marvel) – X-Men Disassembled has been a fun event so far with lots of call backs to classic X moments and a vibe that’s straight out of the 90s.

X-Force #1 (Marvel) – X-Force is back and they’re pissed. On the hunt for Kid Cable, Kid Cable has a mission of his own. Action. Humor. Violence. It’s all there as only X-Force can deliver.

Captain America #6

Wednesdays are new comic book day! Each week hundreds of comics are released, and that can be pretty daunting to go over and choose what to buy. That’s where we come in!

Each week our contributors choose what they can’t wait to read this week or just sounds interesting. In other words, this is what we’re looking forward to and think you should be taking a look at!

Find out what folks think below, and what comics you should be looking out for this Wednesday.

American Carnage #2 (DC Comics/Vertigo) – The first issue was a solid set up of a former FBI agent who has to go undercover in a white supremacist organization. We’re intrigued and excited by this series and can’t wait to read more.

Black Badge #5 (BOOM! Studios) – One of the best new series this year! Basically, Boy Scouts who are recruited into doing black ops.

Captain America #6 (Marvel) – The first story arc wraps up and its hinted at something big happening. We’ve loved this series and can’t wait to see what’s next.

Dead Man Logan #2 (Marvel) – The first issue was fantastic and though this seems like on surface another “lets kill a hero and make some money” event, so far, it’s exceeded expectations.

Extermination #5/Infinity Wars #6/Spider-Geddon #5 (Marvel) – These three are on the list for the same reason… We want to know how they end!

Freedom Fighters #1 (DC Comics) – Head to Earth X for superheroes punching Nazis!

Hardcore #1 (Image Comics) – From Image and Skybound this new series written by Andy Diggle with art by Alessandro Vitti is about a program where anyone’s body can be taken over making them into human drones to target the bad guys. Interesting concept. We’re in.

Livewire #1 (Valiant) – The character takes the spotlight and we’ve already had lots of praise of this issue.

TV Review: The Walking Dead S9E5 What Comes After

Rick is forced to face the past as he struggles to maintain the safety of the communities and protect the future he and Carl envisioned.

The Walking Dead wraps up an era as Rick Grimes exits the show after 9 seasons. But, can the episode live up to the expectations that it brings? The answer is yes and no.

Injured in the last episode with a bar through his side, Rick limps his way away from the zombie horde wounded and bleeding. Through his injury and journey he fades in and out of reality revisiting friends from the past and reflecting on his life and the state of the world.

It’s an interesting episode that doesn’t quite deliver the emotional impact one would hope until the very end with the last ten minutes redeeming an otherwise eye rolling script. But, it’s the details of the episode that really stand out and when examined, the show is deeper than would seem on the initial glance.

The episode is a book end in many ways reflecting the first episode and our introduction to Rick. Much like that episode, he’s injured limping along and taking in the world around him. In each, the injury is to the same side as he slides along trying to figure out what to do and where to go.

Through his struggle he fades in and out of reality visiting by friends of the past with a hint towards the Wizard of Oz. Shane delivers a pep talk focused on courage, Hershel talks about heart, and Sasha wisdom. All while trying to get home. There’s also a bit of A Christmas Carol too with Rick visited by three ghosts to give him advice.

And all of that leads to that ending, how does it end for Rick?

I could easily ruin it and spoil the situation but there’s something about finding out for yourself. That final 10 minutes is where the emotion sits delivering “holy shit” moments one after another and an emotional punch at numerous times. The moments you hope for with characters coming together is there with each delivering their own. And the show does Rick right in the end and… well, you’ll have to watch and see.

While it’s not a perfect episode it does set up an interesting future, especially the teases toward the very end of the episode of where things are going. It’s the closing of a chapter of a book which has many chapters to go.

The episode could easily have gone for the cheap emotional punches but instead delivers something more for long time fans who will notice the subtle winks and nods. It shows the writers want to deliver viewers something a bit more than just surface entertainment and for those that can appreciate that, it absolutely pays off.

Overall Rating: 8.0
