TV Review: iZombie S1E7 Maternity Liv

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0When a pregnant woman dies, Liv develops a strong maternal instinct from eating her brain.

iZombie tonight has done something that’s a bit odd, the episode felt like it went by really quick. That’s not a bad thing, but as I got towards the end of it, I was a bit shocked that was it.

The bad guy in this episode is pretty easy to figure out, which is a bit different from normal episodes too. Catching the bad guy takes up a decent chunk of the episode giving us reveal after reveal. There’s another zombie!? This one has been hinted for a little bit with some signs, but it was still a shocker to see. What does it all mean?

There’s also some movement on the Liv relationship front, with a twist that’s pretty damn hilarious. That along with Rose McIver’s motherly portrayal this episode is a combo the lightens the mood from an otherwise serious vibe.

There’s also Major and his search for the Candyman. It’s a bit strange turn, but still, they’re fitting in that plotline quite nicely without overdoing it.

The series continues to revolve around McIver and her acting as far as Liv. She’s the draw for the series, and it rests on her shoulders. She does quite awesome doing it all too. The episode as usual is fun and entertaining and the series continues to be a fantastic addition to the numerous comic adaptations on television.

TV Review: iZombie S1E6 Virtual Reality Bites

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0Liv inherits agoraphobia — and computer gaming skills — after eating a hacker’s brain.

iZombie has Liv diving into the world of computers and video games to solve a murder. The episode has a lot of amusing moments, and there’s also some pretty gruesome ones as well. The episode really kicks off with a bloated gross corpse, which might be the grossest of the series so far. There’s also a couple of murders, in rather creative ways. Finally, there’s also a lot of geek references.

That’s part of the fun of the episode. Liv gets sucked into a rather stereotypical computer nerd world, including copious amounts of Mountain Dew, never going outside, and lots of cyberbullying. It’s a little over the top, but taken as meant to be, it goes into comical territory. There’s also some slip-ups like how she says SQL, but those are made up for by geek references such as a quote from Conan the Barbarian.

The Candyman mystery is moved along quite nicely too with Major doing a lot of sleuthing. This is a very good thing, because that plot has dragged on a bit.

Finally Liv’s personal life gets some movement as well post being turned into a zombie.

As usual, the episode is charming and fun and most of that is due to Rose McIver as Liv. The series continues to be a treat with every episode, even with a similar formula played over and over.

TV Review: iZombie S1E5 Flight of the Living Dead

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0Liv must eat the brains of her murdered sorority sister in order to gain insight about the crime.

The fifth episode of iZombie is nice in that it gives Liv a bit of a more normal life and a potential boyfriend as the world expands and more characters are introduced.

The crime is an interesting one, but the actual “who did it” isn’t all that cleared and I got to the end of the episode feeling like I completely missed it. Probably not the best of things, since that’s sort of the whole show.

Instead, the episode more focuses on Liv’s past and possibly her future. The characteristics she gains aren’t quite as pronounced as past episodes, but it’s present.

The episode is probably the weakest of the series so far, but it’s still very cute and enjoyable. It felt more as an episode to push some characters in certain directions, like the missing kids storyline and give Liv a love interest. It’s a bridge episode, not a solid one that stands on it’s own.

iZombie is a great show, and beyond entertaining. It bucked its formula a bit this episode and stumbled, but still, much better than a lot that’s on television. Ever series deserves one bad episode. Hopefully this is it.

TV Review: iZombie S1E4 Liv and Let Clive

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0Clive refuses Liv’s help when one of his former criminal contacts is murdered.

The fourth episode of iZombie expands on Blaine’s plan. It’s laid out exactly what he’s up to, and the planning he’s doing. As usual it’s Rose McIver‘s acting as Liv that stands out in the episode.

McIver really deserves an award for her performance so far. With each new brain she ingests she takes on some of the personality of the person. This gets her to do some quirky things, like in this episode’s paranoia. It’s subtle at first, and like each episode it’s pointed out the quirk so we the viewers catch on about it. Without that, we might wonder what the personality trait is, and it could cause her to be less likeable as a character.

In this one, she also takes on some more abilities that allows her to kick some more ass than usual. It’s a nice twist to see her use her fists as much as her brains and visions.

There’s also a lot as far as characters’ histories. We learn more about Clive. We meet Liv’s brother. Ravi and Major have their moments. The personal stuff is few and far between, but it’s more than welcome when it comes up in episodes. More of that please! The series continues its lighthearted ways. iZombie is a fun series, there’s no other way to explain it. And it’s a television show I’m looking forward to each watching each and every week.

TV Review: iZombie S1E3 The Exterminator

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0Liv and Babineaux learn the victim in a hit and run was the killer in one of Peyton’s cases.

The third episode of iZombie is interesting in it introduces the possibility of even more zombies, which is something I’m a bit torn on. It also continues the “Zombonica Mars” storyline of each episode. That’s not a bad thing at all, but to change things up a little will eventually be nice.

What really stands out to me this episode is Rose McIver‘s acting. The actress takes on a different personality each episode, and this one it’s very subtle and something I didn’t even think about until she brings it up herself. For half the episode I was thinking to myself how her character Liv is really cold, and kind of mean. And it’s all in a very low-key way, and that’ fantastic. My guess is her performance is going to get overlooked by the awards shows, and that’s a shame, but maybe folks will recognize how fantastic it is.

The show is charming, cute, and I can’t think of anything else currently on television like it. Thank god we at least get the one. iZombie grows on me more and more with each episode and becoming one of the best comic adaptations currently on television.

TV Review: iZombie S1E2 Brother, Can You Spare a Brain?

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0Liv and Clive work together to solve the mysterious death of a well-known painter.

The second episode of iZombie is interesting in that it focuses on the very Veronica Mars inspired detective story, but at the same time introduces us to a possible “big bad.”

The episode introduces Blaine DeBeers, the individual that bit our heroine in the fist episode. The character is played entertainingly by David Anders who adds some badness to a role that requires that as well as some comedic elements. His storyline, I can’t figure out where it’s going, but it should be entertaining the way Anders plays it.

The show clearly rests on Rose McIver‘s shoulders though. Each episode she takes on some of the characteristics of the people whose brain she eats. This has her taking on a lot of comedic elements, and between last episode and this one, we get to see McIver’s acting chops really take off. The show either shines or fails due to that, and for two episodes it shines. She’s beyond entertaining to watch, and it’s lots of small things she does that really adds up as the best thing about the show.

It’s those small moments that really make the show stand out. Each scene kicks off with art that looks like it’s from the comics, which when added to all the small thing McIver does creates a fun entertaining show, a great companion for its lead-in, and one that even though it shares characteristics with some previous shows, has a voice of its own.

The show is charming, cute, and I can’t think of anything else currently on television like it. Thank god we at least get the one.

TV Review: iZombie S1E1 Pilot

normal_izombietv_s01promo_001-1~0Olivia “Liv” Moore was a rosy-cheeked, disciplined, over-achieving medical resident who had her life path completely mapped out, until the night she attended a party that unexpectedly turned into a zombie feeding frenzy. Now as one of the newly undead, Liv has devised a clever way to resist her baser urges to devour fresh human brains – she’s taken a job in the Seattle coroner’s office. In this appropriately dead-end job, Liv can secretly snack on the brains of the many Jane and John Doe corpses that make a final stop in the morgue.

iZombie brings Vertigo‘s (an imprint of DC Comics) series to the television screen taking the basic concept Mike Allred and Chris Robertson created in the comics, and adding in a bit of Veronica Mars to it.

The episode has a great tone, and vibe about it, taking the sleuthing formula Producer (and first episode Director) Rob Thomas perfected with Mars, mixing it with a (kleptomaniac) zombie.

What’s truly fantastic about the first episode is the smart ass delivery and witty lines delivered by Rose McIver with almost enjoyment. Really, the entire cast is spot on, and compliment McIver’s style. And the show really rests on McIver’s undead shoulders, and due to that, it shines.

The plot is somewhat predictable towards the end, and the tone changes from somewhat humorous to much more sinister and serious towards the end, but overall the show has a fun nature about it that’s very fitting for a show on The CW.

iZombie is late to the television season, and the numerous other comic adaptations that debuted, but it’s a welcome addition. Expect it to quickly become a cult show, it’s kind of hard to not be entertained by the alabaster badass.
