Twitter Fun: Ed Brubaker Takes on Democrats

Bookmark and Share

Ed Brubaker is an amazing writer bringing us classics such as Criminial, Gotham Central, Iron Fist and Captain America (probably the greatest run ever for the series).  Many of his comics have a political tinge and the writer is more than willing to express his views on his Twitter account.

Case in point.  With the recent special election on Massachusetts the Democrats proved once again they can snatch defeat from victory (and that firing circles haven’t gone out of style).  Brubaker decided to speak out on the subject.

Also this exchange took place:

g_willow – @brubaker I’m breaking up with Barack. I’ve had it with this party.

brubaker – @g_willow I feel you. This is why I never join anything.

You can follow Ed Brubaker on Twitter at http://twitter.com/brubaker.  And that’s this installment of Twitter Fun!

Barack the Barbarian #4

Bill – Ha! We’ve got the Elephant cultists on the run, Manny!

Cultist 1 – How could this happen to us?  Shouldn’t they be grateful to us for our fiscal responsibility?

Cultist 2 – Or our superior understanding of global economic and diplomatic finesse?

Cultist 3 – If we can just make it to the warehouse, we can hide under the tea bags!

and

Barack the Barbarian – It is a goddess!  But how is she also a treasure?  And what exactly… does she want from me?

Hilaria – Her name is Liberty.  And she wants you to re-light her torch.

and

Barack the Barbarian – She’s right.  A sword might help you win liberty, but it takes more than that to sustain it.

Black Panther #12

News reporter – …calling itself the Desturi have overthrown the government of Wakanda in what is being called a ‘nearly bloodless coup’.  All Ambassadors have been recalled and all foreigners have been ordered out of the country immediately…

Cinderella: From Fabletown With Love #3

Aladdin – But even so, Islam is not nearly as restrictive as you in the west might think.  In many ways, we are even more progressive than you.

Cinderella – Tell that to the pair of tourists arrested in Dubai last year for drinking orange juice in public during Ramadan.  Or what about the Afghani women jailed on charges of “illegal sexual relations” after they’d been raped by strangers?

Aladdin – That’s hardly fair.  You’re judging an entire belief system by the actions of a few extremists.

Choice Quotes

Barack: The Barbarian #3 – The entire issue is full of good political zingers but we’ll just provide the back and forth between Hilaria and Barack about the demon elephant that’s been summoned to take them on.

Hilaria – What is that thing?

Barack – A conflation of failed policies, delusional political theory and wretched excess.

Hilaria – How can we defeat something like that?

Barack – It will defeat itself.  All we have to do is stay out of the way… until it tears itself apart from within.

Ex Machina #45

Mayor Hundred – Whatever, it’ll be your house in a few months anyway.

Dave – See, I don’t know about that.  Odds are I’m going to have Bob Kerrey running to the left of me, Ogniebene to my right and Bloomberg down the middle.  And most New Yorkers are still smarting from the last time they elected a black man Mayor.

and

Dave – We could be the first city in America to announce a multimillion-dollar plan to get the morning-after pill into more women’s hands, and I think we should.

Mayor Hundred – After four years of me successfully dodging that shitstorm, now you want me to use taxpayer dollars on abortion pills?

Dave – That’s RU-486.  Morning-after is just emergency contraception.  No different than us handing out condoms on the subway.

Mayor Hundred – Except it is.  I’m with you that abstinence is a fairy tale, but I think some birth control options are more… hot-button than others.

and

Dave – But… you’re pro-choice.  Aren’t you?

Mayor Hundred – That’s what certainly what everyone believes.

Dave – And what the hell do you believe?

Mayor Hundred – That public servants should try to avoid genital politics and concentrate on actually getting shit done.

Punisher #9

Microchip – He’s Dead Frank.  Deader than the G.O.P.

Comic Book Collector Loses Leadership Chance

You might remember back in November how Tennessee House Republican Jason Mumpower and the dismissed charge that his comic book collection was an ethics violation.  Mumpower lost his chance this week to rule over the Tennessee House like Doom in Latveria.

The Tennessean is reporting that fellow Republican Kent Williams was voted speaker through a power move and backing by the 49 Democrats.  In a surprise move Williams voted for himself and the Democrats quickly supported him at times sending the chamber into bedlam.  Williams had said he’d support Mumpower.

This is the first Republican speaker of the House since 1969, who ironically needed the Democrats to gain control.

Comic Book Collection Not an Ethics Violation

Comic books have been accused of corrupting the youth, but corrupting an elected official?  The Associated Press reports that Tennessee House Republican Leader Jason Mumpower did nothing wrong by not disclosing his 17,000 comic books as a valuable asset.  The ethics disclosure are used to bring up any conflicts of interests that may occur as an elected official.  A comic book collection doesn’t rise to that concern.

State law requires disclosure of investments of over $10,000.  Depending on the books those 17,000 comics might not even reach that amount.

Mumpower represents the Bristol area, has collected comic books since he was 12 and his favorite book is Spider-man.

Choice Quotes

Big Hero Six #1

In the history of the world, only one nation has ever suffered a direct nuclear attack — the island monarchy of Japan.  The attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War 2 inflicted scars on the national memory that last to this day.  Like any nation, Japan needs to defend itself, but unlike the other great powers, it has forsworn the use of nuclear weapons.  They’ve found another way.

Secret Invasion: Runaways/Young Avengers #3

Some gender politics:

Leave my fiancee alone.  Do you hear me?!  And I am not a tramp you chauvinistic $*@!!

And, is this an Obama reference?

To not believe in you, the savior, the uniter… is to not believe in hope.  I choose to believe in hope.

Ex-Machina #38

The Great Machine – Effective immediately, I am retiring from volunteer community crimefighting.  And running as your independent candidate for Mayor of the great city of New York.  I’m hoping to be part of a truly grassroots campaign, one that will finally utilize the internet’s true potential to reach all voters.  Starting today, contributions as small as one dollar can be made directly to my new website at http://www.hundred4mayor.net.  That’s the word hundred and the number four, so please don’t–

And on speaking to the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City:

Deputy Mayor – You’ve officially lost your mind.  You’re really going to deliver a speech from the same stage where the worst President in my lifetime is about to ask this country to give him another shot?

Mayor Hundred – I’m just being a good host, Dave.  Now which one of my stupid old “trophies” do you think I should present to the Vice President tomorrow?

Deputy Mayor – You’re letting Cheney inside Gracie Mansion?

Mayor Hundred – Believe it or not, New York doesn’t belong to the Democrats.

Deputy Mayor – And 9/11 doesn’t belong to the Republicans, no matter what the out-of-towners they’re busing into Madison Square Garden think.  Are you at least going to tell these people to start allocating more antiterrorism funds to the cities that actually need it?

And on Mayor Hundred running for Governor:

Deputy Mayor – You mean… you’re thinking about running for Governor?  Because, no offense, once that seat opens, everyone knows it’s going to Spitzer, unless somebody catches Mr. Clean in bed with a dead girl or a live boy.

X-Men: Magneto Testament #1

From the writer Greg Pak

In the three years editor Warren Simons and I have been developing “Magneto: Testament,” we’ve struggled with the complicated, rich, and contradictory information the comics give us about Magneto’s life during the Nazi rise to power and World War II.  Different comics give different accounts of Magneto’s name, his age, his ethnicity and religion, his hair color, and even his Auschwitz tattoo number.  But as dedicated Magneto fans have documented, the most compelling and essential material indicates that Magneto was a Jewish boy in Europe during the Nazi ascendancy and provides several key details about the fate of his family and his experiences in Auschwitz.

We’ve done our best to remain true to these elements while fleshing out the rest of our hero’s experiences based on research into the actual historical record.  Longtime readers will notice a wealth of surprising new details — for example, for the firs time, we’re revealing Magneto’s birth name.  And sometimes, because the comics record is contradictory or conflicts with historical fact, we’ve had to choose one detail over another.  But at every step, we’ve done our best to remain true to the key moments that have contributed so much towards making Magneto the deeply compelling character we know today.

But most importantly, in an age in which Holocaust deniers still spread their lies, we’ve done our best to ensure that the real-world history we explore in the series is entirely accurate and that we deal with this unfathomably harrowing material in a way that’s honest, unflinching, human, and humane.  In later issues, we’ll provide citations and suggestions for future reading.  For now, we offer a thousand thanks to Mark Weitzman of the Simon Wiesenthal Center for his expert advice and historical fact-checking.
