Review – Red Team #1

RedTeam01-Cov-ChaykinEddie Mellinger, Trudy Giroux, Duke Wylie and George Winburn are Red Team: the NYPD’s elite anti-narcotics unit. They’ve taken down one drug lord after another with a careful blend of meticulous surveillance and applied violence, but their latest case has even them stumped. Their frustration leads them to take extreme measures setting them on a path from which there can be no coming back. As they’re about to discover, doing the wrong thing can be very, very seductive.

That’s the set up of Garth Ennis‘ new series from Dynamite. Red Team #1 starts off like the best of hard boiled gritty cop shows you might see on television. It’s good, really good. In fact it’s one of the best comics I’ve read so far this year.

The comic starts in the interrogation room, immediately giving you a sense that something has gone wrong. Here’s a cop, being grilled for something and you see it unfold in one issue. That’s right, what could have been an entire series, or at least a very long story arc plays out in one issue.

We already know something has gone wrong and we get to see how cops can become corrupted and take the law into their own hands. Some of the motivations don’t go too deep, but it’s the act here that matters. This first issue is about the act and fall itself, not the characters perpetrating the act.

We do get a sense of the characters though. We generally know their standing and their personalities. We get motivation and we see how the decision for these cops to act plays out.

This first issue blew me away. It’s so good, words can’t do it justice. If you’re a fan of cop shows or noir, this is an absolute must buy.

Pick of the Week – Snapshot #1

This is a week that might be one of the toughest yet for choosing a top pick. There’s about a dozen comics that deserve to be on this list and this choice is a hard one, but I’ll have to go with Snapshot #1 as my pick for the week. The comic is a thriller that starts with a found cell phone and from there gets crazier. Writer Andy Diggle does an awesome noir story and this shows off his talent. Then there’s the fantastic art by Jock that adds to the action. Image Comics has had a run of sold out comics and I expect this to be added to that list. So, head to your comic shop early to make sure you get yourself a copy.

  • Snapshot #1 – see above
  • Red Team #1 – Dynamite is putting out a line of noir/crime comics this year and it looks like Garth Ennis’ Red Team is the first release. Holy crap is it good. A cop story that’s worthy of the big screen.
  • The Fearless Defenders #1 – Marvel’s latest Marvel NOW! release sees a badass team of women band together to save the world
  • Fairy Quest #1 – BOOM! helps get this Kickstarter project into the fans hands. Written by Paul Jenkins with art by Humberto Ramos, that alone is reason to pick this up. Read my review.
  • Superior Spider-Man #3 – Writer Dan Slott has done the amazing in this controversy courting storyline and series. It’s a fun solid read that has made me into a Spider-Man fan.

Dynamite Signs Andy Diggle!

Hot off his Marvel exclusive contract, Andy Diggle is set to write his next series at Dynamite. Andy Diggle’s upcoming project will be part of Dynamite’s new crime line of comics, the first of which – Red Team – was announced yesterday with writer Garth Ennis.  There will be more announcements on the project coming soon!

Diggle has been tasked and given the chance to create a whole new world from scratch. It just so happens that world is in a genre that he excels in. Diggle brings his wealth of experience which includes his working to reinvigorate 2000 A.D., five years under exclusive contact under DC Comics as well as his exclusive deal with Marvel which ran for about three years. His work is expansive and covers genres, but he’s known for his gritty style, perfect for the crime genre.

Andy Diggle’s most recent well-known works include his run on Daredevil, Thunderbolts, and of course, The Losers, which critical acclaim and attention with artist, Jock, for transforming this dormant DC title and making it exciting and relevant for today’s audience.
