It’s our third entry for our Facebook Movie Watch, where we see if movies drive the likes or the likes indicate the buzz a movie has.  Thor held onto the top spot in the theaters this past week and Priest opened as expected.  Below are the new counts and how much they moved.

There was a definite slow down for Thor as far as growth in it’s second week.  I’d imagine we’ll see a build up leading up to the movie, a huge gain the week of it’s opening and then a drop off in the week after opening.  We’ll see if the other movies follow this pattern.  The other interesting thing to watch is the overall grades the audiences give the movie compared to their growth.

Thor – Opens in the United States May 6, already released globally.

Total gain for the week – 105,915

Total gain overall – 290,256

Priest – May 13

Total gain for the week – 23,837

Total gain overall – 46,785

X-Men: First Class – June 3

Total gain for the week – 41,924

Total gain overall – 91,206

Green Lantern – June 17

Total gain for the week – 10,353

Total gain overall – 23,206

Captain America: The First Avenger – July 22

Total gain for the week – 15,106

Total gain overall – 51,692

Cowboys & Aliens – July 29

Total gain for the week – 156

Total gain overall – 1,256

Comic Movies Rule the Weekend. Thor Remains on Top.

Marvel Studios Thor PosterIt was a good weekend for comic book movies as Thor remained at the top spot in the box office, something I wasn’t expecting.  The movie earned $34.5 million for the weekend, only dropping 47.5%, which is similar to what Iron Man experienced.  I actually expected Bridesmaids to be number one, but it debuted with a better than expected $24.4 million.  Thor has now earned $119.3 million, but will likely lost it’s top spot next weekend when the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie debuts.

Priest also debuted this weekend and took forth place for $14.5 million.  It’s been playing overseas for two weeks where it’s earned $25.6 million.  The movie’s audience was 57% male and 57% over 25 and hasn’t received the best ratings on sites like Rottentomatoes.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, which is another movie based on comic books, is now playing in just 34 theaters where it averaged a joke $226 per venue.

PriestGoing into a movie like Priest, I expect a couple of things, bad acting, sub-par special fx, lots of action and bad dialogue.  Priest gave me all of that in an enjoyable, but short movie.  The story is pretty simple, it’s vampires versus humans in a dystopian future run by a church that uses priests to do battle.  It’s been years since the major wars with the vampires and the priests are retired and vampires set up in reservations.  It’s cowboys versus indians but replace indians with vampires.  A priest played by Paul Bettany must get back into ass kicking mode to save his brother’s family.

The story is thin, focusing on events more than character build up (which is almost non-existent).  This is a “B” movie in all it’s glory with some great visuals.  And that’s what’s so frustrating about the movie.  There’s amazing build up and some great building blocks that aren’t used.  The scenes in these massive walled cities is amazing and sets a mood and world that’s fantastic.  The “western” parts of the movie work well as well.  You have an overreaching church that controls the populace, something that’s not fleshed out.  There’s great stuff here, but none of it’s used to it’s potential.

Paul Bettany plays the main priest and does his best Christian Bale/Batman impersonation, very little emotion, lots of grumbling.  It’s ok for the character but something is missing that makes us care about him.  Karl Urban has the most fun of the bunch playing the villain.  Maggie Q is as pretty as ever (and as usual kicks ass) as another priest and Christopher Plummer hams it up as a head of the church.  None of the acting is particularly good, but are you expecting that?

You go see this movie for the action.  All of it’s ok, but none of it’s amazing and all of it I’ve seen before.  These priests are supposed to be amazing warriors that can take on hundreds, but at no time is this really shown off.  Instead they generally fight one on one as if their enemies are taking turns to attack them.  I was hoping for some of the great action fights of Blade, but instead I get a poorer version of it.  That’s not to say there’s not some cool stuff here, there’s just not enough of it.

And that’s the problem of the movie, there’s not enough.  The film is just under an hour and thirty minutes.  You could have added another thirty minutes and fleshed out characters, added more action or explored the world more.  Instead, we’ve got great concepts, great visuals, potentially great characters, in a movie that just barely skims the surface of the potential.

Talking with some friends about the demographics of comic book fans on Facebook, I got to wondering how pages react to events like movie releases.  Thor has been released  globally, but opens this Friday here in the US.  Will the “likes” for the film page increase?  Can you figure out the buzz of a movie or character by this?  For this summer, we’ll track the various Facebook pages related to this summer’s comic book movies and see if they get a “release” bump or what other factors might lead to an increase of decrease of likes.  Where there’s multiple pages, we took the top five when we could.

Thor – Opens in the United States May 6, already released globally.

Priest – May 13

X-Men: First Class – June 3

Green Lantern – June 17

Captain America: The First Avenger – July 22

Cowboys & Aliens – July 29

My Summer Movie Schedule

Bookmark and Share

With the summer movie season just a few weeks away from kicking off, I’ve been going over the release schedule to figure out my game plan.  Below is my must and likely see list for the next few months.  Notice some high profile omitions.

May

Hobo With a Shotgun – May 6 – This unlikely movie is a rage on the Torrents and there’s not enough B-movie grindhouse flicks out there. Plus, how can you not see it with that title?

Thor – May 6 – Um, yes please. With each video and teaser, I want to see this more.

Something Borrowed – May 6 – I’m a sucker for rom-coms, but this one will likely be seen through television and Netflix

Priest – May 13 – I haven’t read the graphic novel, but the trailers have me sucked in.

Bridesmaids – May 13 – This one is on the edge, but it’s possible it’s a female version of the Hangover.

Everything Must Go – May 13 – The story of a man who gets rid of everything. It looks very interesting.

Skateland – May 13 – I’m sure it won’t get much coverage, but this seems like Adventureland, but in a skate rink.

The Hangover II – May 26 – I’ve seen the first one too many times to count. This is one of my most anticipated movies of the summer.

The Tree of Life – May 27 – Brad Pitt and Sean Penn? This screams a nice adult night out during the big action summer.

June

X-Men: First Class – June 3 – I remain skeptical, but the trailers have got be a lot less worried.

Super 8 – June 10 – J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg?  Sign me up.

Green Lantern – June 17 – I still remain skeptical but the first trailer has me a lot less worried.

Bad Teacher – June 24 – Justin Timberlake is hillarious.  Don’t believe me?  Check out any time he’s on SNL for proof.

Conan O’Briend Can’t Stop – June 24 – This documentary has me intrigued and a lot of buzz coming out of SXSW.

July

Transformers: Dark of the Moon – July 1 – The second movie was horrible. I’m crossing my fingers the second one is much better.

Horrible Bosses – July 8 – This comedy looks hilarious.  I think it has potential to be a Hangover like summer breakout.

Project Nim – July 8 – Another documentary but this one with monkeys.  Monkeys!

Captain America: The First Avenger – July 22 – The first trailer got me drooling.  I can’t wait for this film.

Friends With Benefits – July 22 – This is a replay of a certain other movie, but another movie with Justin Timberlake (hilarious) and the very beautiful Mila Kunis is a must see for me.

Another Earth – July 22 – A Sundance darling that’s described part sci-fi, astronomy and philosophy.  Sounds like my type of movie.

Cowboys & Aliens – July 29 – Read the title again, do I need to say why I want to see it? I haven’t read the graphic novel, but you better believe I will before the movie opens.

Crazy, Stupid, Love – July 29 – A movie with Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling has me intrigued.

The Guard – July 29 – I saw a bit about this movie at Sundance, it had me interested at that point.

August

Rise of the Planet of the Apes – August 5 – I’m a big fan of the entire Apes series (other than the crappy remake).  A new prequel is on a must-see list for me.

Conan the Barbarian – August 19 – The original is a classic.  It’ll be tough to top it.

Our Idiot Brother – August 26 – Another Sundance buzzed about movie.  This is the other that has potential to be a Hangover like summer hit.
