SDCC 2023: The Savage Sword of Conan returns in 2024 as Conan #1 sells over 80,000

Announced at San Diego Comic-Con, Titan Comics and Heroic Signatures have revealed the long-awaited return of The Savage Sword of Conan in 2024 – with all-new gritty and gruesome tales from the world of Conan the Barbarian; presented in its original black-and-white, magazine-sized format.

Originally published in 1974, The Savage Sword of Conan featured Robert E. Howard’s iconic Conan the Barbarian untethered from the bounds of the restrictive Comics Code Authority. A darker and more mature title than the flagship Conan the Barbarian comics, The Savage Sword of Conan delved into more gritty and bloody storylines and art, quickly becoming a cult classic publication. The Savage Sword of Conan featured writing and art from legendary creators such as Roy Thomas, Neal Adams, Barry Windsor-Smith, John Buscema, Walter Simonson and much more.

Launching in comic shops in 2024 during the 50 year anniversary celebration, the brand-new The Savage Sword of Conan magazine will be written and drawn in its original black-and-white style by a murderers row of writers and artists including John Arcudi, Frank Tieri, Patch Zircher, Howard Chaykin, Rafael Kayanan, Cary Nord, Rebeca Puebla, Dan Panosian, Richard Pace, Gerardo Zaffino, and many more!

Heroic Signatures and Titan Comics new Savage Sword of Conan joins the new ongoing Conan the Barbarian comic series written by Jim Zub, with art by Roberto De La Torre, as well as the continuing archival publishing of Conan the Barbarian: The Original Comics Omnibus and the Savage Sword of Conan: The Original Comics Omnibus. Fans can look out for Volume 9 of the original Savage Sword of Conan series this November.

Also announced at SDCC were the launch sales numbers for Conan the Barbarian Comic #1 which goes on sale August 2 in comic shops everywhere. Confirmed sales of the initial print exceeded 80,000 making Conan #1, the largest selling issue in Titan Comics’ history. With a second printing planned and third printing probable, final sales for this debut issue are expected to exceed 100,000 copies.

Review: Timeless #1

Timeless #1

The year is wrapping up and Marvel has released another Timeless #1 teasing what’s to come in the year ahead. Between those teases is a story focused on Kang and a “missing moment” in time that he is unable to access. And, since it’s the one thing he can’t have, he must have it.

Written by Jed Mackay, Timeless #1 is another intriguing issue whose real worth is how much it pays off in the future. Last year’s issue is generally forgettable in its story and it’s one tease, the return of Miracleman, took much of the year to come to fruition. 2022’s Timeless #1 differs a little from last year. Here, we get a new nemesis for Kang, someone else who also wants the “missing moment” and has put together a team of superheroes to help get it. This mysterious character, Myrddin, has a greater plan and teases more characters that will come into play. The storyline will also continue in whatever Avengers series is to come after Jason Aaron’s run ends. It would seem like Loki of the past, Kang will be the impetus for this next team’s formation. But, how long and generally how it’ll all play out. Last year’s issue felt like a teaser catalogue wrapped up in a story while this year’s feels more of a story.

The art by Greg Land, Jay Liesten, Patch Zircher, and Salvador Larroca is solid with Kang being ripped through time at which point we’re teased what’s to come. New characters have a cool style about them delivering a weird mix of more modern characters and those of 90s Marvel. But, most importantly, Kang is the focus and it’s his struggles visually which pop. You get the sense this is truly a battle he’s having an issue with, both weakened, tired, angry, and desperate. The colors by Frank D’Armata pop, working in Kang’s purples and pinks as if both can easily fit anywhere. Ariana Maher‘s lettering adds to the drama and time displacement with a style and placement that helps with Kang’s flow through history.

Timeless #1 is an interesting issue. It feels like an improvement on last year’s version but in the end, how things play out from here will really be how it’s all judged. Is this the start of something greater or just a fancy catalogue of what’s to come? Only time will tell.

NYCC 2022: A Twisted Fate Awaits Mutantkind in Sins of Sinister

After months of teases, Sins of Sinister, an all-new X-Men epic, was announced at the Marvel Comics: Next Big Thing Panel at New York Comic Con! The crossover will begin in January’s Sins of Sinister #1, a giant-sized one-shot by the Immortal X-Men creative team, writer Kieron Gillen and artist Lucas Werneck. After that, witness the current Krakoan era crumble and enter a new Marvel Comics age brought about by Sinister’s corrupt machinations!

Immortal X-Men, X-Men Red, and Legion of X will be washed away, transformed into three limited series: Immoral X-Men, Storm & The Brotherhood of Mutants, and Nightcrawlers! Series writers Kieron Gillen, Al Ewing, and Si Spurrier will pen their respective new titles, joined by artists Paco Medina, Patch Zircher, and Alessandro Vitti. Tackling three separate time periods, each superstar artist will draw an issue of all three titles as consecutive issues propel the Marvel Universe further and further into a dark future, dramatically escalating the stakes with each startling time jump. 10 Years… 100 Years… 1000 Years… The Powers of Essex will seek to stretch beyond the limits of time and space! All three writers will continue their current story plans after the X-Universe shattering finale one-shot, Sins of Sinister: Dominion #1!

This universe-melting X-event will introduce a horrifying timeline that makes the Age of Apocalypse look like the X-Men Swimsuit Special as Mister Sinister’s repulsive plans come to fruition. Currently playing a dangerous game with the very timestream of the Marvel Universe in the pages of Immortal X-Men, Sinister’s uncontrollable lust for domination will finally be satisfied but at what cost? It’s the end of the world as we know it, but at least Sinister feels fine. For now. Can that last? Especially when we discover that he really is his own worst enemy…

Infamous for his long-term meticulous manipulating, Mister Sinister’s scheming will yield unpredictable results in an overarching saga that pays off plot threads that have been haunting fans since Jonathan Hickman’s House of X and Powers of X! Sinister has been planning all this since the beginning…and is going to have to see through to the bitter end.

In Storm & The Brotherhood of Mutants, face the wrath of Arakko! Mars has been destroyed – and now Storm wants revenge! To get it, the New Brotherhood of Arakko will battle their way through hell to seek the greatest secret of the Sinister Age…but are they fighting to save the world — or end it? And who is the new mutant hero called IRONFIRE?

Deadly powerful mutant chimeras are spliced and diced in Nightcrawlers! Mister Sinister unleashes his private army of assassins: THE LEGION OF THE NIGHT. Meet WAGNERINE, commanding this killer-crew of brainwashed hybrids, each one a genetic mix of Nightcrawler and one other of marvel’s most murderous mutants! Mysterious forces seek to break Sinister’s control over these fatal fanatics – to turn them AGAINST HIM. But who are they? And what are their true motives…? Enter MOTHER RIGHTEOUS… and a meeting of the most powerful players in the Universe…

The leaders of mutantkind have gone bad in Immoral X-Men! They said the mutants were humanity’s future. In 10 years’ time, they’re proven right. The X-Men are sworn to crush a world that adores and respects them…but Emma can take a few minutes out to crush Mister Sinister first. The Quiet Council have been at each other’s throats since Krakoa was founded. Sinister may think he’s finally come out on top but he’ll wish he was more careful about what he wished for as his maneuvering backfires and a vicious conflict erupts with galactic-sized repercussions! Plus, the long-awaited return of a fan-favorite character from the early days of the Krakoa era—RASPUTIN!

Mister Sinister’s crimes have been wicked beyond imagining and now, the entire Marvel Universe will pay! Check out the covers of all the debut issues by X-Men extraordinaire Leinil Francis Yu, a complete event checklist, and descend into the Sins of Sinister this January!
